Though she was considering attending other colleges, Katherine knew she landed at the right place during her tour of Champlain.
The tour guide led Katherine and her father to the observation deck on the top floor of the Miller library just as the sun was setting over Lake Champlain. While she was already sold on Champlain's business program, that "special feeling" she got on her campus tour sealed the deal.
Katherine is a business major, and has taken advantage of Champlain's Upside Down curriculum to help her get rolling in her first year. One of her favorite classes so far has been Contemporary Media Issues, taught by Rob Williams. "I look forward to attending this class every week. We dissect videos and discuss current issues in the media. I've learned so much, and it has completely changed my thinking in terms of media."
In the Spring of 2008, Katherine traveled to Florence, Italy for a semester abroad. "Studying abroad was by far the best decision I have made in my life," she says. "Immersing yourself in a completely different culture one that speaks a different language is the most liberating and independent experience one could have. I simply can't say enough great things about study abroad."
Now that she's back in Burlington, Katherine keeps busy as a member of the Champlain Student Government Association, and by playing her guitar at The Grind, Champlain's weekly open mic night. A versatile and talented musician ("I play anything with strings," she admits), Katherine experienced a true rock-star night when she played onstage at Higher Ground, one of Burlington's most popular music venues.
"I got a call from a friend asking me to join him onstage to open for Hot Tuna. I played a 45-minute set, and then Hot Tuna came on stage to perform. My Dad surprised me by flying all the way up from Georgia to play with me. It was a truly rewarding experience to play for so many people."
While her dream job is to continue her career as a musician, Katherine is also very interested in the business side of the music industry. "Ideally, I would like to market for a record company, or take part in event planning."
When she's not busy on campus, Katherine can be found at the Radio Bean in Burlington, or at Reuben James' watching the Boston Red Sox and her favorite team, the University of Georgia football team.
