A Little Bit About Me

Hey everyone!

First of all, here is a little disclaimer: I am one of the most random thinkers I know. Half of the time my mind is full of meaningless rants about various things, almost all of which have little to no significance to anything at all. Don't worry, I will try to limit those outbursts here and just share my life, be it interesting or not.

On that note, looking at my history at Champlain, I could be one of the most confused students at this college. I am currently on my 4th major, coming into school as a psychology major freshman year, I landed as a business major for the majority of my time here, while also dabbling a bit in the field of criminal justice. Most recently, I made the life change a couple of weeks ago to be an early childhood development/elementary education major. I realized that being good at monopoly and having almost endless career paths (my reasoning for becoming a business major) just don't stack up to the most important reason: doing something that I love and enjoy.

This brings me to my extra-curricular activities, or at least some of them. I will say right now I have almost no free time, and the free time that I do have is usually spent napping, or catching up on some of my favorite television shows. In addition to being a student at Champlain College, I hold 2 jobs. For one, I am an RA on campus, meaning that every other night from 8pm to 7am I am "on-duty" staying in the hall in case anything comes up. Usually it equates to a doorman type service when students inevitably lock themselves out at 3:00 in the morning after a shower. Why they shower so late I will never know, but that is just the life of a college student. In addition to my RA job, I work as an assistant teacher at the local YMCA preschool program. I work three mornings a week in a classroom of 15 three-year-olds. It definitely gets hectic, but I've never had a job I loved more, except maybe this summer, when I volunteered for another organization that takes up most of my time as well.

The DREAM Program is a mentoring organization created in Vermont that pairs college campuses with low-income housing communities around the state. Students from these colleges can join the program and become mentors, and work with both the whole group, as well as one specific child, to improve their lives however they can and essentially help show them at an early age what it means to go to college. The DREAM Program is all across Vermont and has also just started a chapter in Boston, Massachusetts. I am a proud mentor of an 11 year old boy, and have been working with him for about two years now. If you would like to know more about the program, feel free to check out the website, at www.dreamprogram.org

As if my life wasn't busy enough with school, working two jobs, and volunteering with DREAM, I have always loved sports, and never plan on giving them up. I participate in Champlain's basketball league, and am also currently working with the college to turn their pick-up volleyball and pick-up ultimate frisbee into club teams. Hopefully in the spring both of those will happen, since we already have an unofficial ultimate frisbee team and play in the occasional tournaments (ok, so we played in one tournament last month, and got our asses handed to us). One dream that is quickly becoming a reality is the addition of a Quidditch team at Champlain College! I must admit, I do enjoy Harry Potter on occasion, and I do love sports. I am quite weary of the whole running around in a cape with a broomstick between my legs deal, but at the same time, I just can't resist playing a sport that combines soccer, dodgeball, and rugby all into one.

I guess that is all for now, just a fast and furious look into my interests. I wouldn't be surprised if I forgot any, since I really am too busy for my own good. On that note, I really don't know what to expect from this blog. I'm sure my occasional rant or rave on the latest event in my life will come up now and again. Otherwise, it's just a day in the life of a college student too busy to think, using the confines of a blog to clear his mind of whatever pointlessness may clutter it.
