I've been a slacker

So I've been a huge slacker at keeping up this blog. I'm going to make a commitment to write something new each week. I really want everyone to know how amazing it is to be a UE student! Let's see, I'm currently in 7 classes: Corporate Finance, Special Topics Finance, Money & Banking, Intro to International Relations, Intro to Psychology, Operations Management, and Wind Ensemble.

Today I gave tours at an open house and met a cool girl from Brownsburg who wants to be a German Education major. She also plays flute just like me! If you didn't know, even if you aren't a music major you can get scholarship money to plan in an ensemble. I've gotten a couple hundred extra dollars to play every year. It’s definitely something to look into if you’re musically inclined.

My major focus this week has been securing a summer internship at Old National Bank. They don't have an actual internship program, but I am still trying to work there. A lot of events and programs I've been involved with at UE have been sponsored by Old National Bank; everyone I've met who works there loves it. Since I'm graduating in December I'm really trying to get an internship somewhere I might like to work after graduation.

Since Old National doesn't have an internship program, there was nothing to apply for. I got in touch with a HR person through one of my business professors, Dr. Rosen. The nice thing about professors here is that they bring in speakers from all over and they know a lot of people in their area. If you work hard, any of them will help you get a job or internship wherever you want. That's been my experience.

Semester? What semester?

What in the world is going on? I just realized there are only 14 more days of classes left before the semester is over! It seems like this semester has just flown by! I was just elected treasurer of my sorority and I am so looking forward to working on the budget. I think I just made myself sound like a huge dork, but that's alright, I'm a finance major. In other news, I took my final in one of my classes on Tuesday! It was a 10-week accelerated course and I loved it. It is such a relief to have one of my classes over and done with for the semester!

Last weekend was the UE/USI game, for those of you who don't know, USI is the Division II cross-town rival of UE. And we won!!!! It was such an exciting game down until the very last seconds. We were up 77-75 with about 10 seconds to go and a USI player threw up a 3-pt shot and the whole crowd gasped, but he missed, so it all worked out. Then on Wednesday we played Kentucky Weslyan and we won that game too! I can't wait until the actual season starts, those were just exhibition games. I'm in the pep band so I love going to basketball games! I even have purple all-stars... don't worry, that's not a requirement to come to school here. :-D

Homecoming!

A few quick notes:
*I won $100 at the business competition in Michigan and I learned a ton.
*My picture is of me eating a crepe in Paris, France, about a block from Versailles

Now on to the real point of this entry... Homecoming! This past weekend was a lot of fun! On Friday I went to lunch with a bunch of alums in Harper's. Since I don't have a meal plan this semester, I've really missed Harper's, mostly the ice cream available. On Friday, I had Edy's Butterfinger! Yummy. Then on Friday night, we had a luau out on the lawn. I wasn't able to go, but I heard we even had tiki torches!

Saturday morning was great! This was the second year I was the coordinator of the Homecoming Parade. It's a big job, but I really like it. All my work reallly paid off this year, as the parade was better than ever and we were even on the news! At 6am, I went to Krispy Kreme and picked up 30 dozen donuts (they donated all of them for kids and college participants in the parade!) and then I went back to bed for two hours. I got up and put stakes in the ground with signs on them showing organizations where to line up. (I borrowed them from the Admissions Office) :-D The huge semi-truck trailer came at 9:30am for the pep band to decorate and set-up on. Then at 10:00am, the entries started coming. This year we had over 20 entries into the parade between vehicles, walking units, and floats! Overall, the parade was amazing and I have already made a list of things to do for next year's parade! Woo hoo!

So what about today? I have to get thank you notes out to all the organizations that participated and those that helped out during the parade. I also have a ton of homework for finance and combinatorics (scary math class) to get done for tomorrow. I haven't been keeping up very well in combinatorics and we have a test next Tuesday, so I've got to step it up. Better be off! Bye!

First Entry! Off to Michigan

Hi! I'm Anna, a junior at UE, studying finance and math. I'm also involved in instrumental music and Spanish. This weekend is going to be very exciting. I'm off to Michigan at 11am today with the School of Business Administration to a case competition. This is where we get a business plan from an actual start-up company, we evaluate it and research it with a team and present a pitch to investors/judges. I'm teamed with 5 guys from other Indiana schools. It's an amazing opportunity. I must admit I'm a little intimidated by the fact that my team is made up of 5 guys who will be graduating this year, but I'll just have to be even more of a leader. We return on Saturday night and I'm going to spend Fall Break sleeping, catching up/getting ahead on schoolwork, and searching for a summer internship. Woot! I'll keep you updated. Feel free to leave comments/questions, I'll be sure to get back to you! Have a wonderful Thursday (almost Friday)!
