Fourth Week Frenzy

It is the 4th week in our Fall 2007 quarter and things are starting to get busy, busy, and busy. My practicum training at the hospital is challenging me in new ways. I am a newborn infant in the tragic, complicated, and triumphant world of spinal cord and brain injury. Before my work at the hospital I had known people with spinal cord injuries, but I had no concept of the rehabilitation, medication, spirituality, and psychology involved in a person's treatment. I am completely challenged and yet inspired to learn as much as I can in order to offer any help and hope that I can.

In the midst of this "frenzy" there are experiences that bring life back into focus. During the summer I took a two-week course where a group of psychology students go to Guatemala to learn about Guatemalan indigenous psychology and liberation theology. Today my fellow travelers and I are going to give a presentation about our trip in order to motivate the next cohort to participate in this life changing experience. At the same time we get to have a little reunion party to reminisce and recount our experiences in Guatemala. I learned so many lessons from the Guatemalan people and I hope that this little presentation/party will remind me of some of the lessons that I have already started to forget.
