Re-orientation
Introduction
My first entry on an official blog site...cool. Let me begin by quick introduction. My name is Wesley Dorsett and I am a second year PhD "seeker" in the school of psychology. My friend and I say seeker since we are not currently PhDs but we would like to find and obtain it sometime within the 20 years we are in this program. I am from all over the south, but would primarily say that I am from the suburbs of Houston in a city called The Woodlands, TX. I have also lived in Mississippi, Georgia, and Alabama where I went to school one year at Auburn University as a freshmen. I graduated from Texas A&M University in August of 2007 with a B.S. in psychology. I think that is a good enough introduction...
Crazy Summer
If I were to use one word to describe this summer, it would be intense. Immediately upon finishing up our last quarter (Spring) of my first year here at Fuller, I hopped on a plane home to visit my family for a week back in The Woodlands. From there, I flew back and began my first 2-week summer intensive course--the theology and life of C.S. Lewis (an amazing course...highly recommended if you have any intrest in all in learning about ol' Jack). The ink was literally not dried yet as I handed my paper in and rushed to meet with the local church I had been attending for a 1-week mission trip in Diamondhead, MS to work on Katrina Relief projects. Quite a rewarding experience. Two days after returning from the mission trip, I picked up two of my buddies from Texas who would be staying with me for 5 days. It was fun to see them but having 3 guys jam packed into a one-bed, one-bath apt is enough for anyone to feel claustrophobic. The day they were leaving I began my second 2-wk intensive on Christian Spirituality (and boy did I need it after so much craziness). The last day of this course I was handing in my final papers to my prof's house, and rushing to pick my brother up from the airport who would be staying with me for another 5 days. This was a great time as it is always good to spend time with my brothers now when I get the chance. Now during all of this time, I was also working as an RA for a prof as a temporal employee to help her move her research project on Spirituality in young people (10-12 hours/wk). About 2 weeks later I flew home to spend another 10 days with my friends and family in Texas. While at home however, it was not all relaxing time as I had to complete an IDL (independent distance learning course) on Systematic theology as well as finish up a project at work. Then IKE hit in the middle of all of that!!! We were out of electricity for 4 days so I booked it up to Waco, TX where my brother (the one who had come to visit me earlier this summer) attends school at Baylor University. Here I tried to furiously work on finishing all the course work and papers as well as hang with him and his friends. I then ran back home for 2 days only to drive up to College Station (my ol' stompin' grounds) for the Miami vs. A&M game to see us get demolished...nothing new. Then I jumped back on a plan the next day to head back to Pasadena with a week left to re-orient myself before the first day of school (which is today).
It has been one intense summer. I think next one I will try to take it a little easier and schedule time of nothingness to just kick it from time to time...(but in reality this prob. will not happen :)). Well I am off to my first class of the Fall -- physiological psychology at 8am. It starts in 7 min...
Cheers!
