December 5, 2008Elevators take you placesAfter attending the Christmas concert performed by the Universal Choir and the following Java Jam put on by Brothers Under Christ, I went with some friends to play VC, or Tien len. After the search for a suitable card playing area proved fruitless, I came up with a suggestion: "How about we play in the elevator?" The group thought it was a good idea, so we gathered snacks, drinks and playing cards before hopping into the machine. Settling in took moments, and after dealing the cards and pushing all of the floor buttons on the elevator, we began our game. The first round went smoothly. I didn't lose. However, going between all of the six floors in the Lake House soon bored us. We decided to chill at whichever floor the elevator stopped. Not long after this and into the third round of the game, a few friends called asking if they could join us. We welcomed them, and three more people joined our group, which now totaled at seven. Nobody was claustrophobic, so we thought nothing of the cramped space. We should have. Into the fifth round of the game, the elevator still slamming from floor to floor, one from our group got sick. Her eyes glazed over from the lack of oxygen and her head began to droop. She wasn't the only one. We all started playing significantly slower, wishing we could leave the elevator. Unfortunately, one of our number had previously pressed all of the buttons on the elevator. We wouldn't be able to get out for several minutes. At the fourth floor, after nearly passing out, we rushed out of the elevator as quickly as possible. The girl who had trouble breathing was able to breath easier, and we all began to think much more clearly. Oxygen does that at times. The rush of fresh oxygen must have done something to me, because I had another brilliant idea: "Why don't we push the chairs together and play more VC?" Everyone was for it, so we forced the chairs together and began to play the card game once again. Moral of the story: I don't suppose there is a moral to this story. |
