FYS Service Project
All HBU fresman are required to take a course called Freshman Year Seminar (FYS) which aids in the transition from high school to college. This is my second year teaching FYS and it is so much fun! I co-teach with Bob and we have a great class.
Part of the course requires a service project - this year our class went to Kolter Elementary to help with their International Festival. Kolter is a unique elementary school in that it requires their students to choose a language to specialize in starting in kindergarten - they can choose from French, Spanish, Japanese, or Chinese.
Our entire class before the start of the festival:

Paige, Kayla, Mark Stephen, & Ashley:

Setting up:

Passing out flags:

Kiddos all dressed up!

Kayla is loving her job with the flags!

Practicing their flag waving skills:

Overall, I think our class enjoyed our service project! I am so blessed to be able to teach such a great group of kids!

Fall Foliage
My favorite thing about October is that is means Fall is here; well for the most part. It is has been extra humid this year the early part of October and has finally cooled off a little. I love the cooler weather and being able to eat outside or just open the windows at home. Its so nice and fun!
However, my most favorite part of Fall is when the leaves change color.

Those are two neat pictures I found that could explain to you what I mean. In Houston we get leaves that change colors but what I love is when I am driving through East Texas on different roads seeing all the beautiful leaves and trees. Fall is such a great time of year and I hope you all are enjoying it just as much as I am. The holiday season is upon us and this is the start to beauty within nature and wonderful weather!
Enjoy and blessings~

HBU Homecoming
So I know it's football season right now but since I'm not a fan I'm super excited about basketball season starting. With basketball season about to begin that means homecoming (which we center around basketball) is also right around the corner. This year's events take place November 4th-9th and we have a lot of fun activities planned like a pep rally, dance, chilli cookoff and of course the big game vs University of the Ozarks. I look forward to homecoming because I get to see a lot of friends come back and see all the new and exciting changes here at HBU-from the new soccer field to the new pipe organ. There's always something new going on on HBU but you can keep up with all the HBU news at hbucollegian.com or through HBU's twitter.
So if you know any HBU alums-friends, family or neighbors please remind them about HBU homecoming. You can also come and check it out-it's a lot of fun! Go to hbu.edu/homecoming to see the schedule.
Kiza, our mascot will be there cheering her team on...will you?

Hope to see you there!

Movie Night!
As a part of Freshman Year Seminar (which every Freshman takes), each class holds a movie night. We choose from a list of approved movies and then the entire class gathers somewhere to watch the movie together. Since I teach a class, tonight my class is coming over to my house! I'm cooking dinner - various types of pastas and sauces, complete with brownie hot fudge sundaes - and we're watching Last Holiday with Queen Latifah.

It's always fun to get to know my students better in an environment other than the classroom. Many of our professors open their homes to their students, through this movie night, Bible studies and other events that they host at their house. It's something that I think is fairly unique to HBU and one of the things I love about our university community.

The HBU Spider!
As you all know if you read this blog regularly, I am a huge animal lover...of all kinds! Last week I found a really cool spider outside of our building at work. I had never seen a bright green spider before. With the help of Bob (HBU's Assistant Director of Admissions) we caught the spider so we could show everyone in the office and look up what kind of spider he was.

We discovered he is a Green Lynx. Pretty cool, right? Just another day at the office at HBU!

Hope you are having a great week.

Welcome Back!
Wow! This school year has just been flying by! So, I'm very glad to be back in the office-I was out for two weeks recruiting in south Texas and Corpus and let me tell you it was hot! I met a lot of interested students though and ate a lot of good food which was my problem my first year here at HBU. I gained like 20 pounds from all the food I ate-it's hard to say "no" but I've learned my lesson and I'm trying to be good. This was also my first year to be on the road during my birthday-which was a little hard. I did enjoy it though because my best friend lives in south Texas and she made me cupcakes for my bday. I actually met her at HBU and we've been friends since our freshman year. We were tour guides together (ambassadors) so she helped me at some of the fairs too. Here's an old pic:

You make friends for life in college-something to look forward to while you're here!
Go Huskies!
