FYE Service Project

Like Dianne, I am also teaching a FYE class this semester. We had our Service Project yesterday at Bonham Elementary and it was so much fun! My class paired up with Bob Tripple's (the Assistant Director of Admissions) class and we built a shed, worked on a greenhouse, planted trees and flowers, and cleaned up the flowerbeds at the elementary school.

I think our classes really enjoyed working at the elementary school! We were only scheduled to volunteeer for an hour (during our class time), but most of the students kept working for over 2 hours! Way to go guys!

As a prospective student, would you enjoy doing projects like this during a FYE type class? Bob and I are considering taking our classes back to Bonham Elementary to finish the projects we started, but I'm trying to get a feel for if the students would really enjoy going back.

Freshman Service Project

Freshmen are required to take a class, Freshmen Year Experience (FYE), where we try to help them transition from high school to college. We talk about a lot of things: study skills, time management, getting involved, current issues, etc to help them out their first semester. It's also a fun class because you get to know other freshman in a small group so we often have lively discussions. I help teach one of the FYE classes and I love it! The freshmen are a little nervous at first but overall they are very excited about their first year. One of our assignments this semster was to pick a service project to do as a class and then write a paper about our experience. My class went to Generation One, a ministry in the Third Ward of Houston which is a very low socio-economic neighborhood. We ended up helping clean up some empty lots near a park where kids play. You should have seen it before we got there! The grass was as tall as we were but before we could go in we first needed to clear it of all the trash. It was amazing how much trash, dangerous glass bottles, empty food cartons, etc we collected. We got a little dirty, somebody got poison ivy but it was ALL worth it. It looked AWESOME afterwards and we left knowing that we made a difference for the neighborhood. Some of the freshmen are even talking about going back and tutoring at the center. Check them out and maybe we'll see you there!

Post-Ike Admissions Update

If you come to visit HBU, you won't find Admissions in the MD Anderson Student Center anymore...you'll find us in HBU's newest building on campus, the University Academic Center (UAC). Hurricane Ike left the student center with lots of damage, so we packed up what we could and moved on over. The faculty and staff of the UAC were nice enough to take us in! We miss Husky Central, but are having a lot of fun in our new office!

Here's a shot of the whole office:

If you're ever in the area, stop by and say hi to us...we love having visitors!
