Summer in Paris
I am an HBU alumnus and one of my majors was French...parlez-vous français? One of the neat opportunities that I had while I was a student here was winning a scholarship to go study French in France the summer in between my junior and senior year. I spent six weeks in France, brushing up my accent and vocabulary and enjoying the culture. It was an experience I will never forget and something I hope to relive when I go visit Paris this summer for a week. HBU offers students opportunities like this every year to go abroad. For example, this week we had a group of students that went to Israel and we're also offering Spanish students the opportunity to study in Cuernavaca, Mexico. I definitely would encourage you to take advantage of programs the university offers as well as student discounts to travel while you are in college. The world is big and you have to go check it out!
Au revoir,
Dianne

Husky Hustle
The start of Spring and warm, sunny days always makes me want to be outside! I am not much of a runner, but something about sunny days causes me to have the desire to run. If I had been training I would definitely participate in the Husky Hustle this coming Saturday. The 8th Annual 5K run will take place on Saturday, March 28 at HBU. Even if you aren't a runner come out and support your fellow (or future) Huskies!
Our own Bob Tripple (Assistant Director of Admissions) has been dared to run the race in high heels. He has been doing a lot of practicing in anticipation of the race...

Hopefully the weather will cooperate and Saturday will be a perfect race day! Hope to see you there!

SPRING TIME!!!
Well, Spring Break is over and all the students are back. I love seeing students around campus because when they are not here it is so quiet. Spring Break marks the point for me that its Spring Time and I LOVE Spring!!! My most favorite thing about spring is ASTROS BASEBALL. I love baseball season and sitting out in the sun.
">
Along with Spring Break comes the anticipation of Summer. Summer in the world of higher education is a busy time of year. For us at HBU we are getting ready for SOAR which is our Summer Orientation and Registration. This is a time where new incoming students come and spend time on our campus and get registered for classes. It is so much fun!!!
Once SOAR is over our staff gets to go to a few conferences and learn new and excited things. I love getting to see some of our friends from other schools and cathcing up with them. Once August comes we get ready for Welcome Days, which is a our welcome week on campus. This is a time for new students to come and learn the traditions of HBU. During this week you get to make lasting long friendships and gain so much knowledge about HBU.
If you are a new incoming student, remember to sign up for these 2 exciting things come up very soon. I hope you can all make it to both and see how wonderful HBU is.
Have a great week and Happy Spring Time!!!

Meet Kiza!
">
You may or may not know this already, but HBU's mascot is a husky...dawg's up! We have a live mascot that lives here on campus: a 9 year old Siberian Husky named Kiza. Her name is short for Wakiza which means determined warrior.
Kiza holds a special place in everyone's heart here at HBU. I wanted to take a few minutes and let you know 10 fun facts about out beloved Kiza.
1. Kiza was born on Easter Sunday...April 23, 2000.
2. She was born still born and had to be revived.
3. Kiza's favorite food is popcorn for sure, but she LOVES to eat pretty much anything.
4. Kiza has a long list of tricks that she has mastered including speak, shake, roll over, sit, lie down, and is beginning to learn how to dance!
5. Her favorite HBU sport to attend is basketball because Kiza gets to sit with the cheerleaders...plus, lots of popcorn ends up on the gym floor during basketball games.
6. Kiza's hobbies include hunting, eating, chasing, eating, stalking, eating, barking, eating...do you see a trend here?
7. Kiza gets to attend HBU classes with her fellow students. Lately, her favorite class is Dr. Owen's psychology class (because she gets treats).
8. Kiza's biggest dream that she hopes to accomplish one day is to run a sled! Kiza's trainer, Shirley Martin, says she is keeping her eye out for a sled that has rubber wheels and is built for land since Houston has a slight lack of snow problem.
9. Kiza is very friendly and has never met a stranger...just don't touch her tail! Did you know that it is a tradition that if sled dogs get their tale touched before a big run they will lose their way on the ice? Kiza is a strong believer in tradition!
10. Kiza is having a huge birthday bash this year on April 22 here on campus and the entire school is invited!
I hope you enjoyed learning more about HBU's mascot. Maybe you will see her next time you are in campus! Talk to you soon.
Go Huskies,
Chelsea Townsend
Spring Break!
Spring Break is definitely one of the best times of the year! It's getting warm outside, the sun is beginning to shine, and summer is just around the corner. When I lived in Husky Village while I was a student, I loved staying on campus during the break. Just a few people were around, and it was a great time to just relax. My days were full of spending time with my girlfriend, now fiance, and playing Halo with friends.
The break is also a great time to visit campus if you haven't had the chance to do so! You don't have to worry about missing school or needing an excused absence form. Why? Well it's Spring Break of course! Click here to set up a visit for a personal campus tour and to meet with an Admissions Counselor. Have a great Spring Break, and I hope to see everyone soon!
GO HUSKIES!!!

Robbie Seay Band!!
Mon'Sher posted a while back about the Robbie Seay Band and Charlie Hall concert at HBU - but it's TONIGHT!! Everyone is so excited! If you haven't seen either one of these bands, I highly recommend both of them.
Robbie Seay Band did a special performance at Convocation today which was awesome! The band was great and afterwards Chris Seay did a short devotional.

After Convo, the Counselor's took a picture with Robbie Seay.

The concert starts at 7:00 tonight in the Dunham Theater - hope to see you there!!

SOAR 2009
Registration for SOAR 2009 is underway! SOAR stands for Student Orientation, Advising & Registration. For Freshmen, it's a two day program that includes an opportunity to stay overnight and hang out with your new classmates. Transfer students spend a day on campus with us.
At SOAR, you get to meet with an advisor, register for your classes, learn more about your areas of academic interest and get all of the business taken care of that goes along with school (financial aid, student id pictures, etc.). On top of that, we have a lot of fun. Current students serve as SOAR leaders who guide you through the whole process and really enjoy getting to know you.
If you haven't already, and you're an admitted student, RSVP for SOAR today. You do have to make your $100 deposit before we will secure your spot at SOAR. If you aren't admitted yet, or you're not yet a Senior, then check out our SOAR website to learn more about it.

Spring's in Bloom...
Spring is almost here and that means that spring break is right around the corner. Although most students see this as a great opportunity to take a break from school and relax there are some other options for you this spring break.
We would definitely encourage you to visit campus if you haven't had an opportunity to do so already. The Office of Admissions will be open during this week and we will be offering tours Monday through Friday at 10:00 AM and 2:00 PM. To sign up call us at (281) 649-3211 or go to our website : http://www.hbu.edu/visit
Get involved and do some community service! For example, HBU students are going to be involved in several projects during spring break. There are five different opportunities for service including here in Houston as well as in other places such as Atlanta, Nicaragua and Haiti. Once you become an HBU student you'll be able to particpate in these activities and more. To check out the details you can check out http://www.hbu.edu/spirituallife
Make your spring break memorable!
