Freshman 15??? Yes please!!!

So in my first post-thanksgiving pre-christmas blog im going to talk about something that troubles 92.2345324532453245345433532657597% of all college kids; Weigth Gain. Between the already unhealthy eating environement that college is usually associated with, the holiday seasons do nothing to help this cause. Between deep fried turkeys and an onslaught of delectable filipino foods, i have a little more than your average holiday fat to burn. I'll be spending the next few weeks working out at either the upstairs baugh, or the Wellness center.

The Upstairs Baugh provides a mini fitness center equipped with treadmills, elipiticals as well as bicylces. Besides cardio, there is also an array of weight machines to work pecs, legs, back, bi's and any other muscle you feel the need to work.

If your in for a more serious and rigorous workout, you're place may be the Wellness center. Besides the pletheroa of cardio machines it is also armed with an arsenal of Free weights. If weights aren't your thing, there is also a basketball court, a suspended track, and a pool to swim laps. For only $25 a semester, it's definetly not a bad deal for membership at the wellness center. With all the oppurtunites to work out and stay fit there should be no excuse for anyone to start racking the pounds... save for your diet, but that's another topic entirely!!!

Turkey Day FTN (for the Nguyen)

Thanksgiving is only 2 days away and I can't wait. The whole prospect of getting 4 days off is already sublime, but add to the fact that im going to be indulging myself in filipino up to the wazoo (wherever that is) the next few days is a prospect that i am more than somewhat elated for. (that's a run on sentence if i've ever seen one but it's not like im being graded for grammer and spelinq) =P

Anyways, i just want to wish everyone a safe and happy thanksgiving break and if ure agnostic a happy turkey day. (yeah i, not sure about that last one either) I fully plan on gaining 5+ lbs this brake. I'll be hitting the wellness center located only minutes away from HBU's campus after the break. WIth the food im going to be consuming on thursday through saturday, i'll probably be ready to hibernate for the winter! lol

Only YOU can prevent lakehouse fires

fire%20prevention.jpg

It's that time of year again, yup that's right, im sure y'all guessed it, the day of turkey is at hand. (or if you're filipino it would be the day of the ceremonial thanksgiving roast pig on a stick!) HBU's Red Cross club decided it would be a good idea to help spread the knowledge in order to help prevent forest fires... errrr i mean lakehouse fires and other such hazardous events from happening. Besides making flyers and pamphlets of fire safety, we took it upon ourselves to go outside the Lakehouse resident college and to draw out some of the precautionary measures that everyone should be taking. It was a lot of fun and mayhaps i got a little bit carried away, but a little knowledge goes a long way i always say (as of now apparently)
Stay safe during the holidays y'al!

Friends don't let friends drive while under the influence of turkey! that tryptophan is the #173 leading cause of death in North America and Canda! Don't take this stuff lightly! lol! XD

this could be you... if your turkey catches fire and you jump off a building while falling asleep! BE CAREFUL

this would be the anti-fire commite... i think we have another name but i can't think of it right now.. =P

Bubba Does Fisicks!!!

OKAAAY.jpg

I am taking Physics I this semester as part of the requirement of the BCMB (bio chemistry and moleculladsjflas;dfjslfdf) rrequirement, and what a class it is. I don't consider myself to be a fan of the math, but Dr. Claycomb does a fine job at making it intersting or at least holding my attention. I attend each class knowing that i will leave with a few good laughs. Dr. Claycomb has a really good sense of humor and keeps the class rolling with his Fisicks Jokes. He has even created a character called "Bubba" to help explain Newtons Laws. An example of Bubba and Newtons, would be the description of Newton's 3rd Law; Bubba throws up therefore Up throws bubba! XD yeah, you can actually put that on a test and get full credit for that answer!

One of my favorite part of physics is the lab part. Labs are always fun, partially because of my Amazing group. My lab group are people that i consider some of my best friends. When I'm with them i have so much fun, especially during lab. We are laughing most of the time in class and Dr. Claycomb even joins in our laughter! (and adds more to it) Yup, gotta love Bubba!!!

My FYSE's service project

greenhouse1.jpg

On Tuesday of this week I took my FYSE class to Boham elementary school located just minutes away from HBU's campus for our service project. I am a peer leader for Freshman Year Experience class and it is taught with one or two discussion leaders who are either faculty or teachers at the school. Now you're probably wondering just what kind of class is FYSE... well the class is really a trasitionary class for freshman to take to help them get acclamated to college. It is Discussion based and is designed to help people step out of their comfort zone and to help kids get clarity on their new way of life; known as college.

But I digress... We found out that Boham elementary school was having a green thumb project from Ashely, another disucssion leader so Bob, Ann and I (Bob and Ann are the discussion leaders of my class) were quick to jump on the bandwagon. The school is in not located in the best part of town if you catch my drift so they were asking for help and assistance. We left on our expedition for Boham elementary school at 3:30 and arrived there at 3:37 on the dot.

Our mission, should we choose to accept it (we kinda had to) was to help construct a green house, as well as to help till the soil, as well as to plant new plants in the field area. There was a good number of people that came to help, (around 25) After we got briefed with our mission from the head of the science department, we broke off into our assignments. Some of the guys and myself were charged with errecting the greenhouse and building the shed, where as most of the girls were charged with tilling the soil and de-weeding. There were also some people charged with constructing some solar powered devices. One lucky soul had the privlage of devling into the lake and fetching out some of its greenery for the green house.

Being back in an elementary school was kinda nice. You forget how everything looks so small, but when you're that age everyting looks normal sized in relation to yourself. Seats were smaller, desks were smaller, and even the urinals were smaller. The phrase it's all relative really does apply i think. It was nostalgic. Seeing saftey monitors in their bright orange vests directing traffic and kids walking in single file lines was quite the walk to remember if you will. XD Being in college now i guess i forgot how structured our lives were back then. Single file lines, hall passes, taking a potty buddy to the bathroom (something that girls still do at this day and age) so it was a breath for fresh air to be back at the place where i had recieved the foundation of my education!

In the end it was a great experience and was a lot of fun. The science teacher had asked us to come back if we ever had time and told us of oppurtunites to help teach science hour at the school and to help tutor some of the students. It is an offer i may take up in the future and i think if anyone has the oppurtunity to help someone out, they should sieze it!

The whole purpose of the FYSE service project is to help show the importance of service and to help instill the idea that we have been so blessed that we can go to college, and be living in America and all sorts of things, that we need to help those who are less fortunate then us. We always seem to take things in our lives for granted always wanting the next best thing, whethere it be technology or clothes or whatever. We need to be cognizant that there are people who are not as fortunate as us and we need to extend our hand if only for a little while.

Registration??? yes please!!!

So this week is registration week here at HBU and it’s time to go sign up for the classes you want to take next quarter! Yup, that’s right, the ‘ol rush to get the right class at the right time. Being a junior I was really in not much of a rush to register for classes seeing as only seniors had registered before I had the opportunity. At HBU, priority is assigned by the hierarchy here at school. Seniors had their first pick of classes on Monday. Juniors (like myself) registered on Tuesday, and Sophomores registered today. Sadly, the freshman get whatever classes are left over and register Thursday morning.

Registration starts at 6 on the dot, so you need to get on husky net through the site https://huskynet.hbu.edu:9003/proddad/twbkwbis.P_WWWLogin I usually wake up at 5:55 with all the CRN numbers of the classes I need to take and get ready to enter all the numbers as fast as possible. I ran into some issues my freshman year when there was a hold on my account so when the clock hit 6 am I was unable to register for my classes. It was pretty bad because I was only able to get into one of the classes that I wanted to get into. So always make sure to check if there are any holds on your account a day before so you can talk to either the registrar or financial service people.

I found that it’s always helpful to get the CRN’s ready before hand, So when you meet with your advisor the week before registration it’s also helpful to have your preferred scheduled mapped out already. So I also suggest going to the hbu.edu site and looking up the classes you want to take on the .pdf file that is provided for the semester you are signing up for. Trust me, it makes meeting with your advisor so much smoother and easier, and it also impresses them so it’s definitely not a bad thing. It is also better to get A LOT of classes approved just in case you can’t get into a specific class. Always leave a lot of options and possibilities open when getting classes approved. I hope this little bit of information can help some perspective students sign up for classes!!!

Homecoming '08

homecoming%20game.jpg

This past week HBU had its homecoming week. Now you may wonder how HBU has homecoming even though we have no football team. (On the Brightside, our team is undefeated in football, considering we haven't played any games to lose! =P) Well HBU's solution is simple. Have homecoming be centered around Basketball!!!

Besides Basketball, there were a plethora of different events that were Homecoming related. On Monday there was an organization decorating shindig. All the organizations got together and decorated a banner to represent their own organization. On Tuesday there was an Organization battle, in which track and field games were held to cause dissension in the ranks and see which organization could take home the bragging rights.

On Thursday there was an 80’s dance party night, for those longing for times of nostalgia, which in itself I find pretty funny. Me being a child of the latter half of the 80’s (born 1988) it’s kinda weird that the 80’s are considered vintage. Maybe it’s cuz I’ve been around for as long as the time that’s elapsed to make it vintage but I still feel kinda weird. But 80’s dance songs were amazing.

The homecoming game was held in Sharp Gym at 7. HBU’s basketball went up against East Texas Baptist University. It was an exhilarating game. We stomped them! If memory serves correct, the final score was 104 to 88! So ya trick ya!!!

American Boy Caters 2 U, cuz we're Just Friends

american%20boiz.jpg

This past thursday SPB (student programming board) held a show in order to raise awarness of gang violence in America. The show was organized by Tony Smith and Sophomore here at HBU. It was held in the Morris Cultural Arts' beautiful University Theater. The show featured a pletheroa of different musical acts, ranging from reggae, to country and R&B.
I myself actually performed in the show with some friends who are also students here at HBU. Jaemee and Marie Nisnisan were the two main vocalists and Jay Cooper was the beatboxer, while moi, was playing guitar. We did a medley of songs. We started out with Destiny's child "Cater 2 U" and then slowyly eased are way into Estelle's "American Boy" and finished up with Music Soulchild's "Just Friends". I had been working on the medley for a while, but Marie and I were able to tie up the lose ends and Jaemee was quick to jump on with her amazing harmonies. We actually asked Jay to perform with us two days prior to the performance so we wer all happy it worked out as well as it did. We literally started rehearsing two days before and were rehearsing till before the show started. I don't know if college has turned all of us into clucth performers or what, but we really were able to pull everything together once we got on stage. It was a lot of fun and there was a solid message against gang's and gang related violence.
