Sorry it has been so long since I last blogged! I sometimes get carried away over here in Europe! And tomorrow it will be 1 MONTH until we fly back to America! YIKES! So a few things have happened since...

Lynn Cutter Last week was a pretty calm week; we had our French final exam so we are officially done with French. Now we just have our internships and then our Comparative Public Policy course with Prof. Rimmerman, which we will meet on Tuesday nights from 8-9:30pm after our internships. Tuesday's are going to be very long days, but it frees up Friday's totally so that we have a three-day weekend. This weekend was another chill weekend. A couple students from HWS are actually visiting us here in Geneva because it is their spring break! It is nice to see some familiar faces from back at school! This week looks like it will be fine as well. Like I said, we will have class on Tuesday night and then our Professor here is having dinner with us in small groups so that we can talk with him about our internships and stuff, so I will be going out to dinner on Wednesday for that. And then this upcoming weekend is our Easter Break so we have Friday-Monday off. Most people are traveling but I am just going to stay here in Geneva and try to start and finish our 15-20 page paper for our Comparative Public Policy course that is due May 1st; I want to get it done before I get back to the States. The first week was slow as expected, but I am looking forward to the next 7 weeks of interning at the office! Next week I will be attending the Human Rights Council at the United Nations here in Geneva, Switzerland, which I am definitely looking forward to! This weekend has been exciting already too. One of the other girls on the program has a friend here for the weekend so last night we went out and had some delicious fondue. Today is was a gross and rainy morning here in Geneva, but then turned out to be gorgeous so all today we walked around Geneva and showed her the sights and what not. Lynn Cutter Then on Thursday afternoon we left for our first excursion...first to Chur, then Davos, then Bellinzona! We spent the night in Chur on Thursday night then took a train to Davos for the World Economic Forum, which so far is my favorite part of the trip. The topic of the forum was "USA-What Next after the Elections?" The panel included Howard Dean, Bob Edgar, Olaf Gersemann, and Ayatollah Hadavi! All MAJOR leaders throughout the world! After Davos, we left the next day and toured around Bellinzona which is in the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland! It was beautiful! This weekend was our first three-day weekend because we did not have class today. Two people are in Paris, two are in Munich, and one is in London. The rest of us are still here in Geneva, but there is plenty to do...whether school related or not! This upcoming week looks promising as well! Lynn Cutter 20 page paper. French exam. Education exam. 9 page paper. HOME!!! It always amazes me at the end of the semester how much work everyone has and then all of a sudden you are home! Hello everyone! Right now I am studying for my French exam that is this afternoon at 430pm. I already turned in my 20 page policy brief paper, so that is a relief. Exam time is always stressful, but in the end it is all worth it. The hardest part for me right now is not all the academic work, but making time to say goodbye to everyone. Because I won't be on campus next semester, this is my last semester with the current seniors, many of whom I am good friends with. It is honestly weird to think that I won't be back at HWS until next August! I am very excited though to go home! I am hopefully leaving early Friday morning! I will be driving home to Richmond, Virginia, which is about a 10 hour drive. Over the Christmas break I will obviously be spending Christmas with my family and then I am flying out to Vail, Colorado to spend a week with my boyfriend from December 26th- January 2nd and then I leave for Switzerland on January 8th! Lynn Cutter GREAT JOB HERONS! Although I am very sad to leave my fellow Herons behind, I could not have asked for a better experience and a better season personally! I could not be prouder to walk away from the season having finished 5th in the 50-Yard Freestyle, 8th in the 100-Yard Freestyle, 8th in the 200-Yard Freestyle, and 15th in the 500-Yard Freestyle. I will miss these girls sooo much while I am abroad in Switzerland next semester, but I no doubt will be following them online and definitely keeping in touch because swimming here at William Smith has been a major part of my college experience, and I want to continue that even if I am across the Atlantic Ocean! Me and Allie Donovan at the Liberty League Championship Swim meet...in our NEW team WARMUPS!!! YAY!!! The 2007-2008 Varsity William Smith Swimming and Diving Team at Liberty League Championships at Union College! Although we arrived back on campus around 10pm on Saturday night, there is no time to sleep in...Today is the Big Brothers/Big Sisters Winter Party! We are baking cookies and decorating gloves and donating them while we eat some pizza then we are going ice skating from 215-445! I am so excited! It should be lots of fun! Hopefully we will still be able to do everything and the weather doesn't stop us... Speaking of which...we got out first big snow...we probably have like 6 inches on the ground! YIKES! Lynn Cutter Only two more days until Thanksgiving Break! I can definitely tell that most if not all of the students are looking forward and need a break...including me. Fall Break was just wayyy too long ago! It was a fun weekend though! Yesterday afternoon I went to Koshare with my little sister. Koshare is a club on campus that organizes and presents a concert every year that is organized, produced, choreographed and danced by the students. This year over 135 students participated, either choreographing or dancing. There was a performance on Thursday night just for faculty and staff and then they had three others for the general public...Friday night, Saturday afternoon, and Saturday night. It was really awesome and my little sister really enjoyed it! Last night I also went out to dinner with my boyfriend then we joined some of our friends and saw Fred Claus. It was really cute! I would definitely recommend it! Anyway, I'm in the library right now...as usual! I have an Education paper due on Tuesday about all the volunteering I've been doing at Happiness House in the UPK (Universal Pre-Kindergarten) at Main Street Elementary in Waterloo! I've had sooo much fun there and honestly it was really hard to say goodbye to them last Friday, but I did bake them sugar cookies which they really loved! haha! Alrighty, well back to work! That was our last home swim meet of the semester and actually my last home swim meet this year because I will be missing the second half of our season because I am going abroad! So I only have one more swim meet until I head off to Europe and that is the Liberty League Championships on Friday, November 30th and Saturday, December 2nd. Today was also a big day on campus because it was Open House! I worked the last open house because I am a tour guide, but since I had a swim meet today I was unable to work! Today the William Smith Soccer Team also played in the first round of the NCAA tournament, but they lost! :-( There never seems to be a dull moment on the weekends around here! I usually write my blogs on Sunday, however I am not going to have ANY time tomorrow! We have a mandatory abroad meeting from 10:45am-2:45pm tomorrow! YIKES! That's just wayyy too much of my Sunday, aka the day I do ALL of my homework for the week, GONE! Then I am hanging out with my Little Sister from Big Brothers/Big Sisters and having dinner with her family...and then I have a meeting at 8pm! Ughhh! It's hard though having away swim meets or even home sporting events because you lose a whole day of your weekend and find yourself left with tons of work on Sunday! Our next swim meet is home this upcoming Tuesday night against Wells College and then we have another home swim meet next Saturday against Alfred. My dad is actually flying up from Virginia to come watch me swim on Tuesday night, so that will be fun! This whole time change thing is really messing with my head by the way...it feels sooo much later than 8:20pm! Oh well! So I met with my little sister for Big Brothers/Big Sisters again today! We took a little road trip to Canandaigua and had ice cream and checked out the pets at the pet store! I have so much fun just hanging out with my little sister! Oh how I love Upstate NY weather! So unpredictable. Anyway, enough about the weather. The past week has been busy, as usual. I had my first outing with my little sister for Big Brothers/Big Sisters. I picked her up at her house in Geneva yesterday afternoon and we went to the Pink Bake Sale that was going on right outside of The College Store where they were selling pink goodies and all the money went to cancer research. Then we walked over and watched some of both the Hobart Soccer and Hobart Football games! We had a blast! There was a ton of stuff going on this weekend here because it was Parent's Weekend. Yesterday night I went out to dinner to the Belhurst Castle with my boyfriend. We are both very busy during the week and we don't get to spend much time together, so we usually get to do something fun on Saturday nights! Today I am in the library at my usual Sunday afternoon spot. I have a one page proposal paper due tomorrow for my 18-20 page policy brief for my Sexual Minority Movements and Public Policy course! YIKES! Looking forward to another busy week again. I'm actually organizing for the Varsity William Smith Swimming and Diving team to participate in UNICEF "trick-or-treating" on Halloween, so that should be a fun team bonding activity on Wednesday night! Lynn Cutter Hello again! Sorry I have not blogged in a while! Things have been kinda crazy! Actually right now I am not writing from my normal location. Because I live about 9 hours south of school I usually do not come home until Christmas Break. Typically I stay in Rochester with my Aunt and Uncle who live in Palmyra, but this year I decided to come home for fall break. I posted my name on the Ride Board, which is a campus-wide internet posting for people who need or are offering rides home for various breaks, so I actually gave a first-year girl a ride home to Northern Virginia too. Like I said, the trip home is usually around 9 hours; however, on Friday the trip took me 10 and a half hours! I have never driven that long before in one day! Anyway, this weekend basically has been full of good food and relaxation! You never realize how amazing mom and dad's home cooked meals really are until you come home. Also, you begin to appreciate your queen size bed more! I've been busy helping my brother who is a sophomore in high school get organized because he's having some trouble organizing his studies right now, but tomorrow I am going to be even more busy. I am actually going to go get my flu shot at my mom's office (because she is a pediatrician), go have lunch with my other little brother who is in 5th grade at his school. Not too mention I have about 6 loads of laundry to do! I'm leaving home to head back up to school probably around 8am on Tuesday morning because I have a meeting on Tuesday evening and we start classes back up on Wednesday. Lynn Cutter Hello again! Hope everyone had a fantastic week! I sure did, but I'm not looking forward to next week! I don't know if I've told you yet but I am on the Varsity Swimming and Diving team here at William Smith College and our season starts on Monday...aka I officially will have NO free time, not like I do anyway! haha! In addition to the start of swim season, I also am going to being volunteering at Happiness House and I get to meet my Little for Big Brothers/Big Sisters! Okay so, we have the coolest thing here at HWS...they are called service-learning classes. Basically these classes integrate community service into your academic coursework! As a Public Service minor, I am required to take these service-learning courses but I absolutely love them! I already took a Philosophy course called Morality and Self Interest in which I volunteered downtown at the Community Lunch Program and for that class we had to basically figure out why individuals do community service...because they are moral beings or whether they do it for personal gains. The service learning class I am taking right now is an education class called Children with Disabilities and we have to volunteer 2-3 hours a week at either ARC or at Happiness House. Because I have a car on campus I am going to volunteer at Happiness House in Waterloo (about 15 minutes away). Both ARC and Happiness House are organizations that involve people with disabilities. Happiness House is a nonprofit health and human service agency that offers various programs and services addressing developmental disabilities and syndromes including neurological impairments, epilepsy, cerebral palsy, autism and mental retardation. The program I was placed at is called the New Friends Integrated Preschool and Child Care Program. This is a NYS center-based preschool and childcare program that combines children, 3-5 years of age, with and without disabilities in the same setting. I will be going there starting next week every Monday and Wednesday mornings from 9-10am to assist the teachers and therapists. For this class I am required to keep a journal in which I have to record what I learn each time I visit, for example about inclusion, disability, experiences for students with disabilities, transition, education, etc. Towards the end of the semester I have to write a paper summarizing my experience, lessons learned, and connecting what I've learned through this project experience with what I've have learned over the semester. For me, this is the best and most effective way to learn and I would encourage everyone to take at least one service-learning course regardless of whether it counts for your major or minor! Another great thing to get involved with on campus is Big Brothers/Big Sisters! A national program, BBBS is a one-on-one youth mentoring organization. One of my friends last semester was and still is involved and got me motivated to want to get involved too! Basically the local agency matches and pairs you up with a local child who you just hang out with once a week and do fun stuff together. As an older sister with two younger brothers, ages 15 and 10, and always around children at home, at college I sometimes feel like I'm never around kids, so BBBS is going to give me the opportunity not only to be a role model and mentor to a young girl, but also will give me the chance to be around a child! I've been talking about my upcoming week forever, but what I haven't told you about is what I'm doing tomorrow! I've mentioned in my previous blogs about all the things there are to do on the weekends here at HWS thanks to Campus Activities Board (CAB) and this Sunday there is a school sponsored trip to the Buffalo Bills New York Jets NFL game in Buffalo! The tickets were only $25 for one or $45 for two! We are taking a big charter bus and leaving from here tomorrow morning at 10am and not getting back on campus until probably 9pm! I am sooo excited though! I actually went to the store yesterday and bought a Buffalo Bills t-shirt to wear! GO BILLS! Since I'm going to be out of town all tomorrow though, I am in the library right now doing work...aka playing online and watching the William Smith Soccer game from the window! I have a paper due Monday, a French test on Tuesday, and an Anthropology test on Thursday! I honestly don't ever have enough time on the weekends to do everything! Last night I played capture the flag and made smores on the quad! Then later my friends and I went to the Barn because there was a Video Dance Party! Definitely a perfect way to end the week! Today, it is quite warm and this morning I took a little road trip to the Waterloo Premium Outlets with some of my friends then came back on campus and watched a little bit of the Hobart v. RPI football game at Bristol Field. It's already after 4:30pm and I haven't even started any homework! YIKES! I always look forward to the weekends because there is always so much to do on campus! Lots of people always think that Geneva, NY is in the middle of nowhere, and even though it kind of is...like I said, I am NEVER bored here! There is always an activity going on and when there isn't it's almost better because then you might be able to get some schoolwork done! Tomorrow I think I will be in the library though catching up and getting ahead for my work for the week. Lynn Cutter Howdy! With 3 weeks of school already done, I am finally getting back into the swing of things here on campus. This fall is particularly different though because I am getting ready to go abroad to Geneva, Switzerland this upcoming Spring! I never realized though how much paperwork there is! WOW! But it will definitely be worth it! Anyway, it's a Sunday so I'm busy trying to get ahead in my work for the week! Unfortunately yesterday was a busy day on campus, so I got no work done! But I did get to go to the Hobart football game and the Hobart soccer game! GO STATESMEN! However, no work on Saturday means LOTS of work on Sunday! I have a movie for class to go to tonight too, so I'd better get back to work! Stay tuned.
