First week in February

February has already been very eventful! On Saturday I attended an Ani DiFranco concert in Ithaca, NY with my friend Abi. We were really excited to go, and ended up having a great time- she played ALL of our favorite songs. Ithaca is so easy and convenient to get to, and it has a lot of great venues for concerts! I'm looking forward to seeing Medeski Martin & Wood at the State Theatre in Ithaca later this month.

I have my first Study Abroad information session next week for Bath, England! I'm really excited to learn more about the program and meet the other student I'm going with. A group of my friends who are going to Mendoza, Argentina have already had their initial meeting. I can't wait to get back next year and share all of our stories!

This semester I'll be hosting my first ever radio show with my friend Yeasmine on WEOS. After our training, the only spot available was Monday at midnight! It's okay, I'm still very excited to get started and will expect all of my friends to listen anyway! The radio station has such a wide variety of CDs, and they get new albums ALL the time! I only took a glance, so I can't wait to get a better look. It will be a blast putting together a playlist- Yeasmine and I have been planning it forever! A lot of my close friends already have radio shows on the station. I love asking for shout-outs or requests, usually from my friends Mike and Charles who are pretty funny.

Back at HWS

I hope everyone had a refreshing and relaxing break! I really enjoyed my time with family and friends- an especially long six weeks this year! I was able to spend New Years in Boston, visit friends in New York, and hang out in my hometown of Princeton.

Early on in my break, I participated in A Day of Fine Arts in NYC through the Career Services Office. A Day of Fine Arts is a program geared towards individuals interested in a career in the professional art world. Accompanied by a group of HWS students, I met alumni from the Met, the New York City Center, Christie's Auction House, and the P.P.O.W. gallery. I have been working with Career Services since last year to secure summer internships in gallery and museum work. Last summer, they helped me find an internship with New Hope Arts, a contemporary sculpture gallery in Pennsylvania. This summer, I hope to work for a major museum before heading off to a semester abroad in Bath, England. I spent a good amount of time during break constructing applications for summer internships! Wish me luck!

I really enjoy my classes- Telling Tales: Narratives in East Asian Art, Political Protests in Comparative Perspectives, French, and V-Day and Feminist Theatre. Last year I became involved with the Women's Collective on campus after participating in their production of The Vagina Monologues. I can't wait to perform in TVM this year, and study the show and V-Day Campaign with my class! For more information on the William Smith Women's Collective, check out our great website at <http://people.hws.edu/womenscollective/index.htm>. For information on the V-Day Campaign to end violence against women, check out <http://v10.vday.org/>.

I am excited to begin another successful semester with Arts Collective. This semester we're focusing on one big event- the Spring Variety Show. We hope to encompass all student talents by inviting dancers, singers, writers, and actors/actresses to perform! It should be a great way to round out our incredible first year as a club! Our first meeting of the semester is tonight.

I had a great first weekend back at HWS! On Friday night, I celebrated my friend Yeasmine's birthday. We had a delicious dinner at a friend's apartment downtown, and headed to Yeasmine's house for a party with all of our friends. It is so nice to see everyone back at school. Spring semester is my favorite, despite the cold weather. I always enjoy when spring finally comes in April- the ground begins to thaw and everyone heads to the Quad. It's SO MUCH FUN, that you practically forget it ever snowed in Geneva!

Puzzle Pieces

For our first semester as Arts Collective, we decided to run an Outdoor Art Instillation. We were inspired by Pistols & Poodles, a former "guerilla art" group at HWS that would hang up huge art instillations overnight. For our first project, students decorated and placed 13 five by five foot canvas puzzle pieces in academic and residential buildings around campus. Since Arts Collective functions as an outlet for artistic expression, we did not designate a theme for the puzzle pieces. Instead, each artist chose his or her own subject- including Hugs Across America, Identity, William Smith athletics, and understanding sequence in comics. The results were very impressive, and the puzzle pieces caught the attention of students and faculty. Each puzzle piece was up in its separate location for a week, and we're hoping to display all of the puzzle pieces together by the end of November!

On top of the Outdoor Art Instillation, Arts Collective held the Techno GraphArt Party at the Kappa Alpha Lodge the weekend before Thanksgiving. The party was a great success- with two student DJs playing techno/electronic music, a projector displaying music videos and student photographs, and glow-in-the-dark, student-made graffiti and art covering the walls. The party attracted over a hundred students and went on until the early morning! Arts Collective is hoping to throw a Masquerade Ball for the spring semester!

Zine Making with Anne Elizabeth Moore

The Political Science and Art Departments, among martini and other clubs on campus, organized for author and activist Anne Elizabeth Moore to visit HWS. Her recent book Unmarketable reveals how corporate advertising has underhandedly infiltrated the underground. The book shares her experience with zines, self-published mini-magazines, and her research on the marketing techniques of many major companies.

I had the privilege of having dinner with Anne and a few other students before her presentation Tuesday night. Her talk involved a great slideshow, with many startling images of modern advertising techniques. On Wednesday afternoon she held a zine making workshop in the Fisher Center. Along with a handful of other students, I attended and made my own zine. Zines can be as relevant or coherent as you would like. Some student and faculty examples include the beginning of a graphic novel called "Bee Sting Death," an ode to hairy legs, a pitch for a movie playing this week at the German House, and a limerick. It was a great way to learn about the self-publishing process and stretch our creative muscles!

Bath, England Bound!

I was just accepted into the Bath, England Study Abroad program for Fall '08! I'm thrilled to study in Great Britain- the program includes excursions to Stratford-upon-Avon, London, Oxford, and Wales. I can't wait for the opportunity to travel to other parts in Europe, maybe Prague or Budapest! Flights within Europe are typically inexpensive, and a lot of my close friends will be studying in Paris, Copenhagen, and Maastricht!

As part of the program I hold an internship in Bath, either in an art gallery or museum. I can't wait to meet English people, and to learn more about their art world. Apparently the pubs and clubs in Bath are great, geared towards a young student population. Even better, Bath is supposed to be picture-book beautiful! It is the site of the Roman Baths, and has been a vacation spot since antiquity!

I'm excited to leave in less than a year. We're so lucky that so many HWS students study abroad, typically only 1% of US students take a semester in another country. Our Center for Global Education is extremely helpful in finding the right program for each student. As an Art History major who wanted to go elsewhere than Paris or Rome, CGE helped find a program that would suit my interests. I couldn't be happier with the results!

Sunday

Sunday was great. The weather reminded me of the first few weeks of school- sunny with a little shade, beautiful, and warm. Everyone wanted to be outside. I spent my afternoon under the tall oak trees in back of Caird Hall. I'm thinking of bringing back a hammock after fall break so I can make it a permanent hideout.

Lounging around with friends is my favorite way to pass Sunday. I had spent most of the weekend catching up with people I hadn't seen lately- getting pizza downtown, seeing a movie at The Smith, and hanging out at Kappa Alpha. The gorgeous scenery is one of my favorite elements of Hobart & William Smith. I'm hoping to jump in Seneca Lake one more time before winter hits! You'll learn that during early fall, everyone swims in the lake to cool down! But regardless of season, our campus is incredibly beautiful.

Downtown Afternoon

This afternoon I had my first cup of coffee from The Coffee House downtown. Brand new and student-friendly, I was really impressed with the incredible quality of their coffee and the inviting interior. Original artwork hangs alongside cozy tables and booths, the perfect set-up for an acoustic act. They offer an array of coffee and smoothie drinks; I had an Iced Latte with coffee-flavored ice cubes! The Coffee House reminds me of my favorite coffee place at home in Princeton, Small World. The owners have the same entrepreneurial spirit and community-oriented mindset. When I asked them why they chose to open their store in Geneva, the owners told me they loved the town. I was thrilled to find out The Coffee House is open until 9pm Monday-Saturday. I feel like a cup of coffee downtown could be a great escape from studying, saga-dates, or a routine weekend night. My Intro to Drawing professor last semester, a William Smith alumna, insisted that students should have a place to unwind off campus. A place that would bring students into the community, provide a cultural center, and offer something new.

Looks like The Coffee House joins the ranks of my other favorite places in town. Normal Bread, Alpine Bakery, The Flower Petal Cafe, Geneva Bicycle Center, and The Smith Opera House are other incredible, enterprising bakeries and stores in the community. It's great that Hobart & William Smith students have fantastic resources for when they head off campus!

Arts Collective Fall Festival

This past Sunday was Arts Collective's First Annual Fall Festival. Since the spring, I've been working with my friend Andrew Ockenden on creating a stronger, more inclusive artistic community on campus. Our goal is to form a network of musicians, visual artists, and writers. We had a great turnout for our general interest meeting last semester- ideas were pouring out of everyone there and we generated a lot of great ideas for the 07-08 school year. Fall Festival was our baby- the perfect way to introduce Arts Collective to HWS.

Despite the rain on Sunday, the event was wildly successful! Vendors came from all over upstate New York: Dirty Ass Soaps (a member of Utica's infamous Indie Garage Sale), Indie Pendents, Ithaca's Glass, Que Colores, and Red Jacket Orchards. Student bands played throughout the day: Brad Hester & Mike Lashomb of hsem, Ben Mason with some impromptu tunes, and Danielle Devito. Pete and J of NYC (www.peteandj.com) topped off the festival with an outstanding performance. They played for over an hour, making chitchat with the audience and ending with a birthday shout-out for Andrew.

We were lucky enough to have Sal Zalaveta design and execute a mock-graffiti wall. He painted three gigantic boards of plywood "NYC construction" blue and stenciled "POST NO BILLS" on them to simulate the construction areas in NYC. Sal topped off the walls with a stencil of his friend Reggie dancing. We're hoping to set up the boards outside of Scandling Center one day this week to get some more paint on them!

I'm excited about the future of Arts Collective. This fall we have plans for a Techno/GraphArt Dance Party, a WEOS sponsored Art Gallery, and large-scale art instillations. Our first meeting of the year is Tuesday September 25th, wish me luck!
