This Is My Life To Live
This is my life to live. As a college student I'm going to make decisions about my life that aren't always the best. I don't look back and say, "Man, I wish I had done this differently." I'm not the kind of person that is going to be angry about something that is in the past and over with. I prefer to learn from my mistakes and become a better person from them.
My parents (will probably be reading this) raised me, my brother, and my sister, to learn from any wrong that we have done and to just own up to a wrong doing before anything escalates. People that have known me for more than five years will tell you that I've matured quite a bit in the time they've known me. Part of it is because I've gotten older, but its primarily because I've made mistakes and I've learned from them.
So, about how this is my life to live. I want to make my own decisions about things and not have someone tell me when and how I need to do something every second of the day. College is a time to learn how to be independent and start becoming an adult. I'm not saying I never want anyone to give me guidance because, let's face it, we all need a little help every now and then. Asking questions is all a part of learning.
I don't know if I've had any big lessons this year yet. Last year there were quite a few which could be why there aren't many this year. I have quite a bit of friends from back home that are freshmen and they have been asking me how they should handle things. Everyone handles certain situations differently. I usually try to tell them what I would do in a certain situation or if I've been through the situation before I'll tell them what I did do.
I had someone ask me tonight, "Alex, why are you so nice?"
My initial response was, "Well, do you want me to stop?"
She said she didn't want me to change but was curious as to why I am the way I am. I told her an answer that I felt was most true and most honest. I said, "I want to make people happy and no one ever got anywhere by being a jerk."
That isn't a direct quote of what I said but I think you'll get the same idea. You might be wondering what I did to make someone ask me such a question. Well, I asked her if she wanted me to proof read a paper. I've had conversations with her before about some of the lessons I've learned and some that she's learned and we've become pretty good friends.
Its the simple decisions that I've decided to make that sometimes make the biggest difference. I'm living my life the way I want to. I've changed more than I ever thought I would in the last few years. I've become a person that I like being and that other people like being around. This is my life to live. What are you doing to live yours?
