I Can't believe it!!!
The end of the semester has been PACKED with activities and LOTS of work!!! I have been busy writing a twenty page paper about Globalization and Immigration! I did however make time to see Jacoby Ellsbury!!! The office of Student Activities and Student Government brought Boston Red Sox rookie, Jacoby Ellsbury to campus on December 7, 2007! He spoke about his experience in the majors and how he got there. He was very interesting and articulate. After his speech, he signed autographs and did a meet and greet with the Student Government. Below are some pictures from the event that you may enjoy.
In addition to extracurricular activities, I have been working hard on my presentation for academic symposium. I had to present my topic for the big 20 page paper I have been working on. I enjoyed greatly working on this topic, because I was and still am very passionate about this topic. To give you a little view of my paper please read the following:
“When you purchase a toy at Wal-Mart, do you ever imagine a teenage woman in China working from 7:30 a.m. to 2:30 a.m., eighteen and a half hours a day, seven days a week, in 104 degree temperatures, handling toxic chemicals with their bare hands and paid as little as thirteen cents an hour.” Wal-mart isn’t the only large corporation that is known for exploiting their workers; Nike, and Disney are among others in that alarming group. A lot of Americans who shop at Wal-Mart don’t think of where there products come from, but rather that it is cheaper than buying it at a department store or supermarket. American born citizens can’t find jobs because; it is cheaper to hire someone in India, or Mexico. Globalization has made people become torturous all to make a dime. It is rare that immigration and globalization are looked at side by side; however it is a fact that “a large portion of recent immigrants, both legal and illegal, are low-skilled workers and about one third of those have not completed high school, giving them significantly less education that are American born citizens” making the connection between the two apparent.
That is just a small snippet of what the essence of my paper will be. This topic takes a lot out of you because one never really thinks about the consequences about buying such products at wal-mart or another chain store. This semester has really forced me to think about that and I am glad it did. My goal is to educate one person at a time about this because there isn’t enough education out there. I hope you all have a great week! I will try and write once more before winter break!
Have a great day and Go Lasers!!!
