I choose MCCC because it is affordability and is located close to my home. I love it at MCCC. I've made many friends and have had many valuable opportunities, such as being involved in Student Government as the Vice President and Treasurer as well as the founder of Love Bags. Love Bags is a charity that provides needed and comfort items to children in foster care. I am also the President of Doug's Corner, a community service club at MCCC. As a Peer Mentor I get to help students with all the things I wish I would have had help with when I first started. Things like logging into WebAdvisor, and Blackboard, and figuring out where classes are. Finally as a Peer Mentor I get to tell students all about the great clubs and activities here at MCCC. Montgomery County Community College is a GREAT place to be!

Who's Who

So at the moment I am sitting at a computer in the faculty staff dinning room at Central Campus having just finished breakfast and waiting for graduation practice to start. This has been a crazy week. Yesterday was the Graduation Awards Ceremony at the gorgeous Presidential Caterers. I was there to receive the President's Distinguished Service Award, what an amazing honor. Today, I am at Central having breakfast to honor my nomination into Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.

Boredom!

So in about a week I will be an MCCC Alumni, again. LOL. This time around I'll be graduating with my associates in Elementary Education. This time around it's the end of the road at MCCC for me. I'm moving on, so to speak. Currently I'm sitting at the Peer Mentor cubicle typing away wondering what else I could be doing (should be doing) and I'm left kinda blank for the first time in months. Boredom is setting in, lol. A feeling that I had forgotten I could have. I don't like being bored, I do like having nothing pertinent to do, but having nothing to do at all is so not fun. Soon I will have plenty to do, watching about 8 kids at my other job as a daycare teacher. Then the craziness will begin. Juggling work and school is hard, I couldn't image juggling that and a family. It leaves me in awe over those who do it day in and day out. But for now, me and my bored and awed self is headed to work. Until next time...

BUCKNELL UNIVERSITY

So on Friday April 18th I received my official acceptance letter into Bucknell University!!! I am so excited, I have worked so hard and I am so proud of myself. (So are a lot of other people) But my time here isn't over just yet and as excited as I am about the prospect of new things, I'm left a little sad about what I will be leaving. The people and the atmosphere, I'll miss it all. I'll miss being a stones throw away from home, from my family and friends. I've learned so much about myself in my time here and I hope that it is something that all past, future and current graduates can say about theirexperience. My parting advice would be to make the most out of any and all opportunites that come your way. I know that if I had not done just that I would most certainly be not be headed off to Lewisburg, Pa to study Elementary Education at Bucknell University.

Surprise!!!

What surprises me most about my school is the love and passion that many of the members of faculty, staff and administration have for what they do. At MCCC the people here love their jobs and it shows in their interaction with students and co-workers.

I myself have developed amazing relationships and friendships that will continue even after I graduate. One such person who has had an impact on me is Cindy Murphy, she is a woman who wears many hats. I know her best as the advisor of Doug's Couner, a club that works at getting students involved in the College and the community and whose activities provide them with opportunities for social interaction, while raising money for local and sometimes national charities. Cindy as been and continues to be a vital asset to my college experience. I have gone to her for many things. Things such as academic issues, boy trouble, mom trouble, and life in general. She is always willing to take some time out of her hectic day to listen and give some advice no matter how busy she may be. She helps to keep me grounded and always has a way of seeing the bright side of things. She makes school more fun and makes my life brighter.

Lobby Day in Harrisburg 2005

As I think back over my college career, there are many activities that I have been involved in that have meant a great deal to me. In this day and age, it is important that we be active and engaged citizens. I had an opportunity to lobby in Harrisburg on behalf of community colleges and students. Have you ever walked the steps of our Capitol? Have you ever had an opportunity to discuss key issues such as funding for community colleges with your state legislators? You do not have to be an expert on any of the issues to have a voice. You just need to have a passion for learning and the ability to speak up. Just going to class is not enough! We have to apply what we learn in our community and speak up over issues that cause us concern. Lobby day was a great experience for me because I had a voice. I represented you and I - I walked the hill (they say) in an effort to let our legislators know we are speaking up. What was great was - I did not stand alone but rather the College's President and other administrators walked along side of us. Does it get any better than this? Learning should be about what you can accomplish when you make a stand but also when you stand hand in hand with others to work towards a common goal. I know, so prophetic but true and I am so sure that has already been published as a saying somewhere. My final point is when you go to college - don't be the one who stands by on the sidelines but get involved and make a stand - you will make a difference.
