Martin Lenon

My name is Martin Lenon and I am a junior (Class of 2010) Business Administration major with a dual-concentration in Entrepreneurship and Finance. I have completed two co-ops at State Street Corporation and at Kensington Investment Company, which have allowed me to gain real world experience and build a professional network. I am from Cincinnati, OH. I enjoy basketball, snowboarding, golf, and photography.

At Northeastern, I'm involved with Barkada (NU's Filipino Student Organization) serving as Treasurer on the executive board. I also serve as program coordinator for the Asian American Students in Action (AASIA) Peer-Mentoring Program after being a peer-mentor for the past two years.

A Few Updates...

There hasn’t been anything too exciting since my last post. I forgot to mention last time that AASIA hosted a successful Halloween party at the Asian American Center. We had a great turnout and most everyone was dressed up. The haunted house we set up in the basement of the Center looked amazing with scary things all over the place. AASIA is definitely off to a great start this year.

Things are looking a little bit brighter in my coop search since I had my resume sent to more companies last week. Besides classes, most of my time has been taken up by Kamayan practices. Kamayan is the annual Filipino cultural show put together by the Filipino student organizations from New England-area universities including NU, BU, BC, Tufts, Brown, Harvard, and MIT. This year, the show will be at Boston University. Barkada has been having dance practice more often as the November 22 performance date gets closer and closer. I have also been busy helping plan Dance For Me—a dance competition being hosted by Barkada, Resident Student Association (RSA), Council for University Programming (CUP), and Utsav. Last year, Dance For Me won Program of the Year after selling out the Curry Student Center Ballroom. This year, it will be at Blackman Auditorium and we have 10 student organizations competing. All ticket proceeds will be going to a local charity, so I’m very excited for this event. With all of this programming taking up my time, I haven’t gotten the chance to attend many of the events around campus. Sad. Lastly, I hear our basketball team this year will be pretty good. I am looking forward to going to Matthews Arena and hopefully seeing the place packed with Husky Faithful. Do it up, go huskies!

The fall semester always brings an exciting vibe to campus. Welcome Week events, student group recruiting, a full class schedule, new faces, new plaid shorts and boat shoes, and a vast number of people on long boards/skateboards. The hustle and bustle of campus is back. The most impressive aspect of beginning the school year, however, is the prospect of new opportunities ahead. Whether entering as a freshman, or a fourth-year, there are always new doors to be opened, new connections to be made, and new friendships to be developed.

As a current executive board member of NU Barkada (the Filipino student organization), I was able to collaborate with a number of other students from various student groups to put on Huskies Gone Wild—the culminating event for Welcome Week. Although it was rained out and had to move indoors to the Curry Student Center, we still set up the carnival games and put on a mini concert and performance by student groups and local bands. We delivered a great program that brought different groups together and exemplified what Northeastern is about.

This semester has also gone by faster than I could have ever imagined. As a junior, I’m really wishing for it to go just a tiny bit slower. I love college life. Even though I’ve steadily gotten busier and busier with classes, Barkada, the AASIA peer-mentoring program, and searching for a third and final co-op, it has been one awesome semester so far. There hasn’t been a typical week with new issues coming up and different events to go to. It’s taken me up until a couple weeks ago to really get used to a full schedule of classes again. And now that the leaves are falling and the air is getting crisper, life at NU is finally stabilizing again for me. Wish me luck as I continue my job search and with the rest of my journey through everyday life at NU.
