Lunch & Law School

A great aspect to being in the heart of Boston is that we have a variety of cultural opportunities around us. Of course there's an added benefit too: lots of great places to eat!

Though many (most?) law students probably bring their lunches each day (we have a handy-dandy student kitchen, with fridge, for your use), others buy something to eat locally. From the student-run Cooperative Income Sharing Program (CISP) snack table to local joints like Pho & I (Thai) to chains like Boloco, we have a big list of tasty places nearby. Not to mention all of the dining halls on Northeastern's campus, too.

In fact, within 5 blocks of the law school, you can find:
*Chicken Lou's (a cottage/shack right on campus and a local fav!)
*Au Bon Pain
*Qdoba
*Boloco
*Wollaston's Market (with prepared foods and deli section)
*Cafe at the Museum of Fine Arts
*Boston House of Pizza
*Uno's
*Pho & I
*Symphony Sushi
*Whole Foods Market (prepared foods)
*Panera Bread & Cafe
*Betty's Wok & Noodle Diner
*Cappy's Pizza and Submarine Sandwiches
*Espresso Royale Cafe
*Boston Shwarma
*Taco Bell
*Wendy's
*Subway
*...and more.

Just some food for thought.

What do you like to eat for lunch?

Summer Tip: Resumes

I know some prospective applicants are already hard at work on their personal statements. If you're looking for something to work on this summer until our application goes live (we expect it to do so in early September) you might consider working on your resume as well.

[Of course if you're not working on either, you're in no way, shape, or form behind on the law school admissions process! You have plenty of time! You have until March 1, 2012, to get your application materials into us for fall 2012 entry. Some folks are just chomping at the bit to get the application done.]

We require all applicants to submit a professional resume. This should include your educational history since high school; any awards, honors, or other distinguishing marks we should know about; and your employment history.

Here are some resume tips from Purdue University. Your alma mater might also provide some help in this area too (check with a pre-law advisor, career services advisor, or writing center personnel).

Fast Five: Fun Things to do in Boston

Fast Five: Fun Things to Do in Boston on a Wednesday

1. Visit the Museum of Fine Arts for free after 4 pm. Conveniently located just one block from the law school!

2. Climb the 294 steps to the top of Bunker Hill Monument and enjoy a beautiful (and free) view of Boston Harbor.; last climb at 5:30 PM on weekdays in the summer.

3. Walk through the North End and stage your own dessert war (which cannoli is better? or gelato?).

4. Enjoy a picturesque and beautiful summer sunset at the viewing station next to the New England Aquarium at the Central Wharf.

5. Catch a (free!) outdoor movie at the historic Boston Hatch Shell along the banks of the Charles River and the perfect-for-picnicking Esplanade. (Movie Schedule).

Summertime....and the living's easy...

It's a beautiful, sunny summer day here in Beantown today. If you've never visited Boston summer is a great time to come. There is kayaking or sailing for low-cost on the Charles River, not to mention super easy ferry rides to the Boston Harbor Islands.

Washington, D.C. Law Forum -- the Recap

Whew! This weekend was a whirlwind, that's for sure. I got to meet several of you on Saturday at the law school forum in Washington, D.C., which was great. Of course just making it to DC by Saturday morning was quite the challenge. My plane on Friday got cancelled - after being delayed. Lucky for me, my friend and colleague Abby was willing to help me look up flights (I was in line at Boston-Logan with one hand on my cell phone, the other at the kiosk, trying to figure out a plan) and come up with a strategy. Ultimately Delta was able to rebook me via the only way to get to DC in time for the Forum -- a super early flight on Saturday morning on US Airways. Rushed to the hotel, took a 20 minute nap, changed into my suit, and then hurried downstairs to the forum.

Did you go to the forum this past weekend? Will you go to a forum near you this year? There are other forums coming up in July in Oakland (CA) and Chicago. Not to mention forums throughout the fall (Toronto, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City, Boston, Atlanta, Houston).

I heard some great questions while I was at my table -- how to apply (answer: electronically via the Law School Admissions Council), does it matter that I've been working for 2 years since I graduated from college? (answer: no, that's great! At NUSL we value work experience in our applicants; it's not a requirement by any means, but something that we certainly take into consideration in the holistic application reading process); and so on. I'll try to tackle some of the most common questions I got in this blog over the next few weeks.

Happy Tuesday!

Welcome Class of 2014 -- and greetings to the future class of '15!

Welcome to the Office of Admissions blog! We hope this is an easy way to get to know more about Northeastern University School of Law, the admissions process, how to apply, why we're a unique and very special place, and much more. Feel free to ask questions and let us know what you think.

Speaking of new beginnings - the new Class of 2014 is almost on campus (just a few more months, guys!) and work on the admissions process for the Class of 2015 is slowly getting underway. We almost can't believe it here in the Office of Admissions that the first Law School Admissions Council-sponsored Law School Forum of the year is this weekend in Washington, D.C., at the Marriott Wardman Park on Saturday from 10 AM - 4 PM. I'll be there proudly behind the NUSL table, so come and find me to talk about this fabulous place, applying to law school, or whatever may be on your mind.

Last week at a conference I learned that attendance at law school forums nationally is slightly down compared to previous years. Many are hypothesizing that potential law school applicants (you, reader?) are getting so much information online that you don't see a need to come meet law school admissions folks face-to-face. Certainly you can get tons of information about the admissions process electronically (and we hope we've made our site here at NUSL particularly useful - not to mention our Twitter or Facebook pages), which is a good thing. However meeting us in person at an event also allows you to ask questions in a natural way - and learn something you may not have known to even search for. So come and see me at the forum this weekend - or any of one us at a recruiting event on the road or an on-campus event this summer.
