Strange Places, Familiar(ish) Faces
When my mom took me to the Kroger over family weekend she said, “I keep expecting to see someone I know here. Wouldn’t that be a shock?
“Funny, because I feel exactly the same way, and I actually live here, I replied.
Neither one of us saw anyone we recognized at the Kroger. Not surprising considering the sheer number of students and other people living around that particulate Kroger. Even at home I rarely run into familiar faces while grocery shopping. I did, however, experience great joy once I started to actually recognize people around campus. People from class, friends of friends, people who live in my building, people from work, regulars at my job. My new favourite conversation is “Hey, don’t I know you? and being able to respond with an enthusiastic “Yea, we met at the [insert place] last weekend! or “You’re [insert name’s] roommate! What’s up!
Granted, it has been over six weeks. I probably shouldn’t be this excited about seeing people I actually know outside of the usual settings. But it’s a positive change from being absolutely oblivious and wandering when I arrived here knowing only the handful of people I’d met at orientation. I guess I am getting that much closer to being Homecoming Queen in 3 years. ;)
GO BUCKS!
