C'Mon Baby Light My Fire
I realize it’s important to one’s safety to heed fire alarms. However, when it’s 3AM in the middle of winer, I’m not trying to go outside and free just because some moron doesn’t know how to make popcorn.
The smoke detectors in the dorms are ultra-sensitive and go off, well, a lot. I know this is for the safety of the residents; if the opposite were true, we’d have some problems. On the other hand, this makes me and most other sleepy, comfortable dorm-dwellers less likely to take the alarm seriously in the event of an actual fire.
Some idiot actually lit two bulletin boards on fire on the second floor of my building in the dead of night a few weeks ago. I don’t live on the first floor. I didn’t know there was an actual threat. So I just groaned a lot and put a pillow over my head until 15 minutes later it turned off. It wasn’t until I got an email from the hall director the next day detailing the situation that I actually realized what was going on.
The fire alarm went off this morning shortly after I got through showering and getting dressed. Still, despite the actual fire of a few weeks ago, I still went on with my morning routine, cursing the incessant ringing all the while. As far as I know of, though, there was no real danger this time.
I guess my point is, fire alarms are a necessary evil. It would help is the residents were a little better informed, but I know there are only so many people in charge and available at any given time of deal and things don’t always work out to the greatest convenience of the residents and the authorities of the building. Basically, I just wish the alarms would go off at times when I’m in class or at work or not napping or showering, etc.
I know I should be more cautious; I’m not trying to burn alive. But I’m lazy as well, and so far I’m still alive. I know this is the wrong attitude, but people, be more careful with that popcorn please!
GO BUCKS?
