Winter Essentials at THE Ohio State University/ Everywhere Else Too
“There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing. -Steve Rak aka Dad
Especially since most students do the majority of their traveling around campus à pied…
-Coat, gloves, hat, scarf. Obviously…and obviously matching.
-Boots. While it doesn’t snow very often here due to the lack of a body of water any larger than Mirror Lake, when it does, what normally ends up happening is “a wintery mix aka slush city.
-LAYERS! Tights (leggings some people call them…), undershirts, long sleeve shirts, sweatshirts. Some classes are very far. And very warm upon arrival. It’s important to be able to shed a few layers to avoid overheating once reaching one’s final destination.
-Become familiar with the bus schedules. CABS stops are basically exactly where you need them to be for most of the main buildings on campus. Long hikes in sub-zero conditions, windburn, frostbite, etc. can therefore be avoided.
-Hot chocolate. Delicious at all times of the year, but more practical now than ever before. Marshmallows are a given. Soup, chili, and other hot bevs/ liquidos calientes are also strongly recommended. (Starbucks is available for meal swipes at McPherson).
-PAD (Pizza at the Drake)! I honestly feel bad for the people who work there on days like Sunday, when it was honestly -7 degrees and a total of 15 customers braved the cold and straggled into Mirror Lake Café during the entirety of my four-hour shift. Everyone else has to eat too though, so the PAD’s phones must have been ringing off the hook.
-This one is kinda obvious, but as a reminder, WATCH WHERE YOU STEP! Not only is there slush everywhere (gross), there is ICE everywhere. AND IT’S CLEAR! My friends and I were sitting at the tables by the window in Marketplace this evening and watched no fewer than 6 people slip on an icy patch and land on their rear-ends. While it was funny, it probably hurt and was definitely embarrassing; I’m glad I learned by example when walking by that spot later.
-Get cuddle buddy for those cold winter nights? Or a stuffed animal and a warm blanket…
Really though, I think the thing that makes the most difference between being warm and being cold is wearing a hat. That’s just my personal opinion. Basically, don’t let the random 50 degree days fool you. It is winter; it is cold here in Ohio. Bundle up.
GO BUCKS!
