New York State of Mind
I'm back from NYC with the CommTech Scholars kids...all in all a pretty cool trip. We got to see MtvU Studios (that's the channel that's always playing when you work out at the RPAC), and this cool movie sound editing studio called Splash Studios (check out their website). This guy just runs it solo with his wife, it's totally independent but they do a bunch of big name movies...very impressive. Then we saw this digital media studio that does stuff for Bratz (those weird disproportionate dolls that replaced Barbie) and Laguna Beach and such. It really gave us all a chance to ask the people in charge the big questions about getting where we want to go in life...needless to say those are some pretty weighted questions.
Actually, the other group was the Design Group (we were the Video Group), and they had a reschedule thing, so ironically they got to do what we all wanted to do, and that was talk to the HR people at MTV to find out how to get internships and experience and all that good stuff. This comes at an appropriate time, when I just found out from Buckeye TV that if you want to get into the TV business, you really need to start with internships and jobs freshman year! Who knew??!! Well, apparently everyone but me. Also, I met a few people in my Scholars program and at Buckeye TV that are not much older than me, but have already moved to New York City for a few months and had internships and gotten their foot in the door. Could I really live in a city like NYC for awhile, possibly for life, just for the sake of my career?? I've really just adjusted to the city of Columbus…but it's a whole different ballgame here. However, it's definitely a step in the right direction for the big career choices like television. I guess when I was choosing a career path, I didn't really think about the details like the place I would call home for the rest of my life.
But the best part of the trip was that it was just so much fun. It was a chance to get away from school and have a good time in a new environment for awhile. It wasn't all freaking out about our futures…it was a unique experience with a bunch of new people in an amazing city!
