Scary Stories

Halloween at Ohio State is definitely an interesting time, particularly on South Campus. Yesterday I saw more creative costumes than I ever could’ve imagined, albeit most were rather inappropriate, but that’s Halloween on a college campus for you. (There were quite a few parents visiting Bradley Hall last night…you should’ve seen the looks on their faces when they saw some of the costumes! I’m guessing the idea behind Halloween has changed a bit since they were in college…)
I had a great time last night getting to know more residents just by helping people with costumes and discussing Halloween plans. Plus we’ve had a lot of spooky stuff going on in Bradley…we had a horror movie night, and on Halloween the head of the OSU Slavic department is coming in to talk about the origin of vampires. I love faculty programs; you never know how fascinating the guy that rambles in front of the 500-person class with his PowerPoint every morning can really be! I’m hoping to throw together a costume tomorrow maybe…we’ll see what the rest of the week brings.

News Flash

I’m back at Buckeye TV this quarter…I wasn’t going to come back, I really wasn’t…the way it was run last year was so frustrating, I just couldn’t take it anymore. But I went to the Open House, just because my friend didn’t want to go alone, and I ended up joining again. See, the new student News Director gave this really convincing speech about how he was going to turn BTV around, make it quality, actually teach us some skills. Trust me, it was really persuasive. So I decided to give it a shot and join the news team. After all, I think a student news channel has a lot of potential.
But now it’s crazy! Trying to turn around 6 years of a mess of a station is definitely not easy, and definitely not a one person job. Plus, our Director has had some internships, so he’s treating this like “the real world of news…that means no help, strict rules, strict deadlines, demanding perfection. This is nearly impossible for us beginners. I find it especially difficult because everyone there wants to be news reporters and is doing this for their resume tapes, but I’m really just doing this for fun. Since I rather go into print media, what I really need is writing samples.
So between classes and the RA job, putting together news packages is impossible. Just today I got an e-mail from the Director of Libraries saying he could do an interview that I had been trying to get all week about the Main Library construction. This meant dropping everything, getting all dressed up, buying tapes, getting a camera and crew, and conducting an interview in an hour’s time. Insanity. Yet, it’s the business. And what a business it is. I believe in the news for sure…but it can be especially disheartening when I know no one’s watching Buckeye 19 News. That’s why I accepted the position as Promotions Director to start getting the word out there. Like I said, it’s not a one person job. It’s a big mess to clean up. Maybe too big.

Career Connection

So, Career Services appointment #2 this week...I decided it was time to get things in line. And it’s a good thing I did! Career Services here is sweet! Academic Advising can be rough here at a big university...it’s hard to get the individual attention you need. But I’ve gotten so many of my worries taken care of in just 2 appointments. I was pretty sure about keeping my Communications major, since I really enjoy studying it, but I wasn’t sure if I should throw International Studies too. I thought it might make me more marketable to work in a big city plus it’s definitely something in which I’m interested. So I came in with this simple question. Now, I’ve figured out my major (I’m keeping Communications and adding either an International Studies minor or a Writing minor), have researched careers, had one-on-one help with my resume, and I am getting ready to take on an internship for next summer. Plus, I’ve been researching Study Abroad...something I hadn’t even considered until now! I’ve gotten so much figured out and I’m really excited to fix up my resume up, get a cover letter, and start sending it out! Plus, my advisor’s really excited for me too, which definitely helps in the motivation department. I’ll keep you updated!

Back to Reality

Ok, so I haven’t exactly blogged in awhile. And by that I mean like the entire month of September. And I really don’t have a good excuse, other than this crazy RA job. But on that note, it is an amazing job!
Yes, there’s definitely times I want to scream and rip down all the posters and fliers I painstakingly put up everyday, but those times are few and far between…I couldn’t ask for a better job. (Believe it or not, I’m actually starting to think the horrors I went through to get this job were worth it). Everyday I meet amazing people, and with every crazy situation I build skills that make every aspect of my life easier (i.e. public speaking, problem solving under pressure, objectiveness, thinking outside the box…the list goes on).
And this South Campus thing? Don’t tell anyone I said so, but it’s growing on me…I’m the only Northie on the staff here, and I like to try to convince people “The air really is fresher on North Campus! But I have to say, it’s a fantastically diverse population…and the food is great, of course!
And with that, there are definitely some updates in my life as a Buckeye that I will be blogging about. Sophomore year has really opened up some doors for me…it’s really my perspective that seems to be changing. Look forward to many interesting updates ahead! And, as always, Go Bucks!
