A Day On, Not a Day Off

This past Monday, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, OSU had a Day of Service event. I went with some of my co-workers. It was pretty interesting…Governor Ted Strickland gave a little speech, and the director of the Hale Black Cultural Center, Larry Williamson, gave a speech. Actually, his was more of a performance, in a poetic style with conga drums playing in the background. I love that kind of stuff.
Our group was sent to the Columbus Metropolitan Library, where we did “shelf reading to make sure all the books were in the right place. This was ironic, considering my mom is a librarian, and I hardly considered this doing service. But through talking to the group and the librarians, we came to the conclusion that the library is the common ground and great equalizer for those who may not have the same economic and educational opportunities as others. So in a sense, making sure books are in the right place for a person to find them can in fact make a big difference when it comes to someone’s education.
