Breaking Barriers

Many of the classes I take for the Honors Program aren’t actually Honors classes, but graduate-level classes. Last quarter I took Mass Communication in Society 643, this quarter I’m in Political Communication 614, and next quarter I’m in a Woman’s Health 600-level class and a Presidential History 600-level class.
Taking these classes is such a huge difference from your regular run-of-the-mill undergraduate class. Yes, there are a lot of older undergrads, but there are also graduate students…and adults! Like, people old enough to be my parents!
Sometimes we have different requirements than the graduate students, but basically we all have way too much reading to handle.
The thing that is cool though, like in my Comm 614 class, is that we sort of get to learn from each other. Everyone comes from such different educational/lifestyle backgrounds, that I learn more from group discussion than anything else. The different age groups have very different perspectives and experiences, and no one is too afraid to speak up and argue, even arguing the professor!
The best part is that everyone is so into learning about the topic and discussing it until there’s nothing left to discuss…the enthusiasm is contagious! Yes, the massive amounts of reading and analyzing are killing, but it’s one of the few classes I find myself actually having fun!
