As someone sets light to the first fire of autumn.

Semper Ubi Sub Ubi?My 4x4 Rubik's cube broke. More specifically, my suitemate broke it. Strangely, I enjoy it much more in its broken state: I made a sculpture out of it. Its name is Ubi and he's held together with super glue. (My fingers were similarly held together for a few terrifying seconds.) Don't ask how I know it's a he.

When I went to The Lantern's newsroom on Thursday to get an assignment, I noticed something laughable. On the wall they had a bulletin board with their best page layouts on it. And the title of this board spelled the word layout as a hyphenated "lay-out." I guess I wasn't shocked—I've seen similar and even worse errors in the actual papers they publish. (I even started the Facebook group "I'm 'phased' by The Lantern's gross illiteracies.")

Anyway, the campus editor gave me an assignment—or I volunteered for it—that involved attending today's Board of Trustees meeting. So I went. I wasn't sure how to dress, so I threw on some preppy clothes and thought I'd be fine. When I got to the building where the meeting was being held, I chained my bike to the railing while Board members drove in in convertibles. Not kidding. I walked into the building, and there he was—the Gordon Gee! Bow-tie and all.

The meeting was boring. I would call it a convoluted boondoggle of bureaucracy, but I can hardly grasp the meaning of that. I ended up leaving with no story in mind; nothing important had happened. Fortunately, I had suggested a story idea to the arts editor the previous night. Checking my email after the meeting, I saw that he had responded telling me to get on it. So I have a story idea and I'll post more about it once it's developed.

I should have done the summer reading in the summer. I completely forgot about it till earlier today in a lecture when we were told we'd be quizzed on it Wednesday. Uh oh. At least I'll have things to do this weekend. Believe it or not, I like having things to do.
