Tonal Values

Our next assignment for Design 201 course was “Tonal Value Drawings.” We were to draw an object or a person using five tones of gray scale. This assignment didn’t take as much time as the previous one, but this too, took a lot of time. I first selected three pictures in black and white, drew them using a tracing paper and redrew the final one on the Bristol board. I chose a person, a cat and a rose to do a rough draft of the drawings. Below are pictures of the two of the rough drafts I drew using different kinds of pencils. I chose the person to do the final draft. I keep writing about my design assignments for the blog, because I thought it’d be visually interesting for the readers.
Today is February 25th, and the last day of regularly scheduled classes is March 7th, so we only have about two more weeks of school. Final examinations are through March 10th to 13th. So good luck to all the OSU students with finishing off the quarter!!

B-Boying!!!!

There are a lot of different kinds of extra curricular activities that Ohio State University offers. In the beginning of the year, I’ve joined all kinds of clubs including break dancing club, Kendo club, KISO (Korean International Student Organization), JSO (Japanese Student Organization), HKSA (Hong Kong Student Association), the Makio Year Book club, and the cuisine club. Although I am sticking to just break dancing club and KISO for now, it was a lot of fun and valuable experiences I’ve had in different clubs.

As I mentioned in the first blog entry, one of my favorite hobbies is break dancing. Not only does it keep you fit, but it’s a lot of fun and cool break dancing. I’ve always wanted to break dance ever since I was in elementary school. I’ve never had the chance to, but after finding out that Ohio State University has Break Dancing Club, I’ve decided to join it right away. I recommend everyone to look for and join a club or few clubs that they are interested in. Ohio State University offers hundreds of different clubs including athletic teams, student organizations and other clubs so everyone would be able to find a club that they are interested in. It’s been only four months since I started break dancing, and it’s a challenge to myself but I am gaining a lot out of it.

Last year, our University held "Smoked in Ohio" and this May, we are holding "Smoked in Ohio 2" again in the RPAC. You can see the videos of the Smoked in Ohio held last year in the following website.

More videos here.

The posters below are promotion of Smoked in Ohio 2, so if you are interested in break dancing or just want to enjoy the time with us, you should come and have some fun.

Design Project

My advisor told me that although Design 201 is a 3-credit-hour course, it requires a lot of work and effort. Now I am taking Design 201, I am relearning what a time consuming job it is to do a design project. Every student majoring in design (industrial, interior and visual communication) is required to take 4 design courses: Design 200, Design 201, Design 202 and Design 203. Although it is very fun and interesting to do a design assignment, it is very tiring just to sit there and do design project for hours after hours. Last week, we had our fifth design assignment on the topic of Negative and Positive Spaces. We had to choose three images in black and white and draw the cropped images of each emphasizing the negative space using black ink pen. Without any exaggeration, this design assignment alone took me more than 10 hours and what’s more, we were given less than a week to finish it! Now I feel like I am complaining how much work I have to do on my blog, but it is a very fun stuff and looking at your work after having it accomplished gives you a sense of pride and achievement. :D

      Studying in a University

One of the largest differences between studying in a University and in high school is the amount that you have to read. If you are a consistent reader, it would be really helpful in your academic success. However, if you don’t make the habit of reading a part of your life pattern, you will have a lot of trouble carrying on with your studies in the university. I’ve once seen from someplace that in order to get a “C? in the 5-hour-credit Ohio State University course, you have to be committing 15 hours every week for that particular course. That means you have to spend 45 hours every week (including your class time) if you are taking 15 credit hours (The average amount that full-time student here takes) just to get a C. That is 9 hours everyday from Monday to Friday. You might think that it’s a lot of work, but the fact is, you are expected and should do that much work.

The picture above is the three of my textbooks for this quarter (Approximately three-months-amount) each of which is a textbook for one of the courses I am taking.

Having noticed how I never really talked about how it is academic-wise in Ohio State, I’d like to write about things we do in classes. This quarter, I am taking (or have taken because the quarter’s already ending) four courses: Design 200, Art 205M, Art 100.01, and Art 300.02

Yes, that is a lot of ART. Last Monday in Art 205M class, we were assigned a capstone project and given a week to complete the project. The capstone project was to finish four drawing pieces using different media including various pencils, charcoal and ink. Each drawing piece took hours to complete and a picture of the completed work is shown below.

The four drawing pieces I had to do from Nov 26 – Dec 3.

I’ve seen from a syllabus of a course where it said, to get a “C? from a 5-credit-hour course, you are expected to put 10 hours of your time every week. Say, you take 15 credit hours (the approximate average hours full-time students at Ohio State take), then you are expected to dedicate 6 hours everyday from Monday to Friday every week. To get better grades, of course, more time would be required. As you get older and become a college student, more freedom is given, but more responsibility and work is required out of you too.

*Goodluck to all of you who are taking the finals!!

Dorm Food

Now that I’ve talked about living in a dorm, I’d like to tell you about the kinds of food we eat. There are over 10 dining places on campus (or at least that I know of) you can go to. Usually your dorm will have two dining places nearby. Often, one of them is a buffet such as the Morrill Commons and Kennedy Commons where they have variety of foods from vegetables and meats to bread and potatoes. The other kind, such as the fresh express and buckeye express has wider variety of food where you can pick up your entrée and sides. Because of the wide variety, you don’t get bored of the food too. There are also other dining places such as the PAD (Pizza at the Drake) and the Market place. Most of the foods are American styled, but places like Market place have foods that you can get from places across the world. If you have a dining plan, you can just swipe your BuckID and most of the time, the values are more than enough for you to eat for the whole quarter. There are also different kinds of eateries on High Street such as McDonalds, Wendy’s, Chipotle and Chinese restaurants.

      Achieving Academic Success

Today in my Art *Survey class, the instructor talked about how we could achieve academic success. Our primary goal here in the university is to achieve academic success and graduate, so I thought the message was useful. To refresh my memory and to share the message, I would reproduce the lecture we had today.

Achieving Academic Success
?	- Attendance – Go to every class at all times; do not come late and don’t leave early
?	- Sit near the front of the classroom
?	- Pay attention and take notes
?	- Participate in class discussions.
?	- Review
?	- Study in advance – Quizzes, Exams, don’t wait until the last minute
?	- Turn in all assignments on time and check your work
?	- Use the office hours; talk to the professors, they are there for you
?	- Establish regular study hours
?	- Manage your time – Use a calendar or a planner to keep you organized
?	- Control your social life and relationship.

These are some of the essential points we went over today in the class. If you are a student, whether in college or high school, I hope you keep these points in your mind and strive for success. Of course, you would have to put in corresponding amount of effort in order to success. I would like to end today’s writing with one of my and my professor’s favorite quotes:

"Strive for excellence because mediocrity SUCKS"

* A Survey course is a 1 credit hour course, where you learn the basic knowledge about the university and your major such as campus resources, GEC requirements, and your responsibilities.

Football is one of the most… No, it is the MOST famous sports in Columbus. I figure that Asian guys (including myself) tend to not enjoy playing and watching football as much as people in the United States do. Other sports like baseball, soccer and basketball are far more popular among Asian guys (especially those guys who’ve never been to the US for a good amount of time). I didn’t even know how the points were scored and how the game was played before I came to Ohio. But as I watched it with my friends, I found the fun of football. We’ve just beaten Penn State 37-17 today, yeah! (Go Bucks!). On Saturdays (Football Game Days) a lot of the students and other people will dress up in scarlet and gray and watch football. When there is a home game, the stadium is always full with the wave of red shirts. If you are an international student, you may consider watching some football before coming here, although you will eventually find the fun and the excitement out of football yourself.

For some of the new students, it may be time consuming and difficult to get adjusted to the new environment. There are pros and cons to living in a dorm with your roommate and suitemates. It is bad in a sense that you get less personal space as you would if you were in your own house, but it is beneficial in that you get to make new friends. Luckily, I have the coolest kids for my suitemates, but I’ve seen some kids who had to move their room just because they did not like their roommates. It may not be an easy thing to live with people who had grown up in a total different environment, but they are your new family. If you respect other members in the suite, and if you are willing to make a concession for them, you should have no problem. If problem do arise, you can always go to your RA (Room Assistant) for solutions. For me, I am very satisfied with my life on campus with my suitemates.
