Wex
My best friend calls me up at 3:00 today and says: “hey, wanna go check out a documentary at the Wexner Center tonight at 8? ” I reluctantly agree, knowing how much work I have to accomplish, (this is the week from hell). We met at Pesto beforehand to sample the best and most originally flavored ice cream that the campus area has to offer. Their flavors are insane: champagne pomegranate and oatmeal stout (beer ice cream, who knew?), among others.
The documentary, Our Daily Bread, contrary to my reluctance, ended up being very interesting. It was a German film, consisting of minute long shots depicting certain processes in agricultural production. Spending the latter years of my life in a farming community, I felt very desensitized to a lot of the material that was being presented. But I liked that the director took such an objective and distant perspective on a traditionally controversial subject. The entire film was shot without lyrics or even words, there were silent scenes of cows being slaughtered, and shots of pesticide covered fields. It was thought provoking and mentally engaging without being “in your face”.
This was also the first time I have ever attended a movie showing at the Wexner Center, and for the cost of a can of food, I was very pleased. I'll have to continue to check the website for further opportunities. Another note, not really as a result of this movie, but in part as a response to, I’m attempting to decrease my meat consumption over the next month, as a health experiment. So we’ll see how that goes.
