Broadcast this

Ok Ok, I know I've talked about some of my activities, my endless naps, and a bit on class times and studying, but I haven't even mentioned anything about my beloved broadcasting!
First off, although Ohio State does not have a Broadcast Journalism major. We have Public Affairs Journalism where you get to learn all about reporting, editing, ethics and all that stuff. All Journalism majors have to write for our school newspaper The Lantern (www.thelantern.com) and we are required to have an internship as well.
So if I want to be a TV News reporter why Ohio State?
The journalism foundation is still the same. Any journalist will tell you that writing, writing, and writing are what you need to succeed, and you definitely get that background at OSU.
Now for the TV time, we have Buckeye TV www.buckitv.osu.edu which is like a student organization turned class. I'm taking it now as an elective and am getting so much knowledge on the world of TV news. After seeing how reporters here have to shoot, write and edit their stories, I've grown a new respect for my craft. I have reported for 3 news stories on campus so far and have anchored our Buckeye News Weekly.
One thing about Buckeye TV is that you have to learn on the spot a lot of times. There aren't any professors. We have this one instructor who's over the program and used to work with Channel 10 News here in Columbus, but that's only one guy.
When I did my first story, which was on Depression, I contacted a counselor, interviewed her and some other students in front of the Counseling and Consulatation Center, and did my stand-up from memory, all in one day!

I'm in the school of Communication now and it wasn't too bad applying for the Journalism major. As a Freshman, I would hear all about how it's so hard to get into the Journalism major and that only 20 students are selected per quarter. That sounded more like a myth to me since I got in with no trouble and although I had a high G.P.A., my friends with lower grades got in the first time as well.
So don't fret if you feel OSU Journalism is for you. It's just 3 pre-requisite courses before you can apply while other majors have a ton of classes to take before they can even get in. The requirements for Communication can be found at www.comm.ohio-state.edu
