What a Welcome Week!
MONDAY
That 1st week flew on by and was jammed packed with events and excitement!
I kicked it off with the Involvement Fair on this day. I was a little apprehensive about participating since none of the officers in my Bible Study were available to help, and I thought I would be stranded alone at the table trying to recruit people. It's tough doing a one-man show, but that's what a lot of Presidents have to do.
So I got up early to go to Target and got candy and pens for the table. I struggled searching for a Parking space when I arrived back on campus, but that can be expected when big events go on and at peak hours. Next, I had to print off some sign-up sheets. I hauled all these items to the Registration line to find out where my Bible Study's table was located. As I was waiting in the line with other groups and their fully staffed committees, I tried to pep myself up to recruit solo for the next 4 hours, and suddenly 3 of my friends who are also Bible Study members showed up and they helped me the whole time. So thank God for dedicated friends that can pitch in at the last minute!

We were able to get close to 100 names and email addresses from students who were interested. It got pretty hot though, and maybe I should've bought more skittles over snickers to pass out since the sun was beating down hard. I ended up getting a deeper tan in those 4 hours than my summer in Georgia! But at least it wasn't raining like last year, and it was fun meeting all the new people because it helps to know names and faces to make this big school smaller.
After the fair, I went to a barbeque thrown by the Greeks at the Hale Black Cultural Center and saw even more of my friends. There was a step show after that, but I was too tired already.
TUESDAY
I met up with my friends at 9:30am to walk over to the Stadium to participate in Community Commitment. A lot of people were out there, especially for the last morning to sleep in before classes. They put us in groups and gave us a T-shirt, breakfast and lunch. There are a variety of different service projects people get assigned to from going to hospitals, arts&crafts with kids, and of course the campus clean-up. My group got to pick up trash on 8th Ave, which was interesting. We got to interact with the neighborhood residents, and many of them thanked us for coming down to help clean up their area. There was about 12 of us in my group, and they were a nice and funny bunch of girls. Some of us exchanged numbers and had a lot in common. So you never know what serving the community can do for you!
I went to the Cultural Involvment Fair after at the Hale Center where there were some of the same groups from the day before but more emphasis on diversity.
WEDNESDAY
I was glad that my 1st class didn't start till 1:30, but I had a hard time finding the room my class was in. I had no problem locating the building, Scott Lab, (http://www.osu.edu/map/building.php?building=148) because it's a pretty nice and noticeable edifice, but it's also way too big! I was only looking for classroom #1 but found myself in the 800s on one end then the 300s on the other until a girl finally directed me to the basement and then I was in the 40s to the 20s, and then snugged in the corner there it was: Lecture Room #1. So it pays to go to class early even if you think you know where it's at, because 1st impressions can mean a lot for some professors, and they don't want to see you strolling in 20 minutes after the bell claiming to be a dedicated student.
The class is Geological Science 108, Gemstones a.k.a. the 'Rocks for Jocks' class. It's my final science class and I have it everyday for 48 minutes, but since it's a medium-sized lecture, I have a lot of friends in it, which can help come study time.
THURSDAY
I went to all my other classes for the first time today. A 10:30 History course and then The Lantern Newspaper class at 3:30. My History professor was a little radical for me. He was kind of joking I guess but still cussing at kids on the first day. He seems real laid back though and knowledgeable so I'll see how his teaching tactics turn out. Already for the newspaper, we were given deadlines, assignments, and various shifts for breaking news and copy-editing. I get to write for the Arts section this quarter as the Fashion/Style writer! So that will be a fun beat to cover.
I ended up staying in the Lantern newsroom passed 9:00pm copy-editing the next days articles since the other editors took off when a lot of stories were coming in. I actually enjoyed copy-editing this time, maybe because the stories were interesting, but when I edited yesterday and during Spring quarter, I was ready to go to sleep on the keyboard. Copy-editing can sometimes be more rewarding than reporting because you get to work on so many stories while when reporting, you may just do 1 article. And when I see the paper the next day, I can see how I contributed to several articles and read the headlines that I created!
FRIDAY
Today, I tried to clean my room a little bit when I should have been studying for my Science quiz. It was'nt too hard though, but there were a couple questions I was unsure about concerning specific gravity (come on I thought this class was about gems!). I was one of if not the last person taking the quiz, all my friends took off, which is alright because I always take my time on any type of examination because what's the rush? And plus I like to triple check my answers.
My friend Lisa and I got our books later on that day. When I went to the bookstore Tuesday, my Gemstones book was $45 and now it's $60! So always catch a deal when you see one and don't just think that the book is going to be there waiting for you (there are other people in the class)!
That night we went to the Ice Breaker party thrown by the Deltas at Club Ice (Ice Breaker at Ice!). Doors opened at 10pm, we didn't get there till about 11 and the line was wrapped around Columbus! After the line was being pushed back and pepper sprayed by the police to get in a single file, we finally got in at around 12:30 (A whole hour and a half standing outside in my heels!) and the cost went up to $30 for girls and $60 for guys so you know the boys were rolling out. It was pretty packed inside though and lasted to about 2:30. I don't know how professional clubbers do it! One, maybe 3 times a quarter is enough of the club scene for me.
SATURDAY
How convenient that I stayed out all night since I had a Church meeting the next morning. It was at the Barnes and Noble at Easton where we discussed our upcoming bible study lessons and plans. Since I was already by the mall, I had to go in, but since I'm on a shopping fast, I just browsed.
Parking in the CP lot on campus, although better than taking the bus all the way to West Campus parking lot, it's just a gravel, dirt covered lot. So you can imagine how my car looked by the end of the week.....looks I'm going to be taking up a car wash fund.
I spent that night with family. Got to see my grandmother, my aunt actually came up this weekend, and we went out to eat with my sister at Martini Italian Bistro, pretty nice.
SUNDAY
Regular Sunday morning for me except that I had to transport 5 people in my car to Church, but the more the better. I attend New Salem Missionary Baptist Church (Newsalemcares.com)on Cleveland Ave. (intersects with 11th Ave by campus). It was the church my mom's best friend from high school goes to, so it was the church she took my sisters to, so it became the church my sisters brought me to, and now the church that I bring people to!
There are so many good churches students can go to in Columbus, and I like New Salem because it has a College Ministry. My sister led the bible study for the ministry and then passed the reigns down to me.
Around 5:00 I went to my storage unit to bring some more bins and stuff (when will I ever be done unpacking!) and later that night to conclude Welcome Week events was the Big Free Concert featuring Mario, Kelly Rowland, and T-Pain! Now that's a welcome back from Ohio State. It was right on the South Oval (I could've watched from my dorm if I wanted) and of course it was crowded! Everyone kept edging up to get a better view of T-Pain. It was a quick and cute concert, and a way to finally end the first week back!
