Breaking News

A requirement for The Lantern class is that we have to do 2 breaking news shifts, and my shifts have been interesting. I first reported some laptop thefts in the Law Library, and during my other shift I had to report OSU's recent hiring of Colonel Mansoor, aide to General Petraeus in Iraq. These were both Campus stories that got on the front page of the Lantern, which was great since the Arts section is always buried on the inside. I felt like a real investigative journalist when I reported the thefts. I had to contact the police and be at the scene...intense stuff, here's the article: http://media.www.thelantern.com/media/storage/paper333/news/2007/11/06/Campus/Theft.On.Rise.In.Moritz.Law.Library-3081499.shtml

After finishing up some articles Monday, it started pouring down raining. So of course this was the day that I forgot my umbrella, and I was all the way at the Journalism building on 18th Ave, and had to get back to my dorm on 12th Ave. I secured my hair under my hood, found an empty trash bag to put some papers in and sprinted all the way to South Campus! What an attempt to relive my old track days. But I made it back, hair still intact and jeans only slightly soaked.

Tuesday was Voting Day for the Mayoral Election. I first voted last year on campus in the Ohio Union and this year i was registered in the Jesse Owens South Recreation Center or the South Campus Gym. I wasn't even planning on voting but went ahead and fulfilled my civic duty right before the polls closed at 7:30pm. After that I went the Men's Basketball game since they just started their season, and my mom's friend from High School had an extra ticket. They lost to Findlay so I don't know how the team is going to be this year.

Wednesday I shot my first Buckeye TV package (story) of the quarter. Doing a story for TV is shorter than writing one for the Newspaper, but so much time goes into it. I have to schedule interviews with people where I have to have a camera guy available, all inbetween classes. But I was able to squeeze in some time to shoot before Choir practice, and did a story about the new Ohio Union construction. I was outside in 40 degree weather so I had to get what I was going to say down quickly because there wasn't going to be continuous takes in the cold. I got a taste of what real reporters go through capturing the latest stories no matter what the weather is like.

Friday was the real test of busyness when I had to interview the Ohio Union Director at 10:30am, Take a science quiz at 1:30pm, and then catch a flight back to Atlanta at 4:30pm! Thank God it all worked out though. The interview was quick, all the camera equipment worked, my camera guy was able to come, and I did voice overs right before my quiz.
I went back home to see my sister compete in the Miss Georgia USA Pageant.NorthwestAtlantaUSA.jpg
She just graduated from Ohio State in June. She didn't win the pageant, but didn't know how experienced the other girls were in pageants. The winner had done the pageant 5 times and was 2nd runner up in Miss America this year. Also, Miss Ohio is an Ohio State student (http://missohio.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=104&Itemid=79), and she's been doing pageants since she was 9 years old.
