Media Mania

This week in Bible Study, I brought everything but my own speaking notes! So I really had to wing it, but at least the topic was "The Purpose of Your Personality" so it wasn't too deep and everyone loves to talk about themselves anyway so that helped. But I felt like that was test. I rely on my notes so much that without them I was forced to know the material well enough for myself, and had to be able to think quickly on my feet.

There was a Media Panel that spoke on campus Tuesday. It was great hearing from these media professionals on how they got their careers started. There were News reporters, a TV Director, News anchor, and a Radio and Sports broadcaster from the Ohio area. The ones that stuck out the most to me were Kirk Herbstreit, an announcer for ESPN, Kelsey Webb, WNCI- Radio Broadcaster, and Eleanor Hayes, an ONN News Anchor.
I thought Kirk's story was so interesting because he said that even though he was an OSU quarterback, he still was so shy talking in front of people. He had to do a lot of practice interviews in front of the camera to overcome his fear and to be more comfortable.

Kelsey's story was one about proving herself to the radio station and showing that she was good enough. She started off working the graveyard shift by herself and kept trying to stand out and begged the producers for a chance to host a show. She said she got laughed at but eventually they took her seriously and she got the job she wanted 2 years after graduating from Ohio State!
Eleanor Hayes said she had to try out doing the weather and radio before becoming an accomplished anchor. She said never limit yourself or turn down any opportunity if it's not your dream job because sometimes employers want to see how hard you're willing to work to be on air and who's just in it for the spotlight.

I was glad that we got to speak to all the media professionals after the panel and had the opportunity to ask them more questions. I got a chance to talk with Eleanor Hayes for a good bit, and she was so attentive and responsive, when I thought she would've been a Diva Anchor, but not at all.

Thursday was my big day in The Lantern! I had a feature story for the Arts and Life section that basically featured me! Here it is: (http://media.www.thelantern.com/media/storage/paper333/news/2007/11/01/Arts/Ten-Rules.For.Womens.Accessories-3072109.shtml?reffeature=recentlycommentedstoriestab), though it's not exactly the same online since the actual copy of the paper had a full body shot of me on the entire page! I felt like a celebrity for a day and was glad that I got to do a feature story on a topic that really interested me. Fun, fun, fun!
