Busy or Better

How opportune yesterday that right when I was headed out of church after Sunday School to attend the on-campus church service, a deacon asked me to help out with the Voters Registration table after the service. I just couldn't say "No, I'm actually going somewhere else sir," so I ended up staying for the enitre service. Amazingly enough, the pastor's message was: "Choosing What Matters Most When We Are Running On Empty."

I felt like I was supposed to be there to receive those words. Here I was running to service after service on Sunday when I just needed to keep it simple.
The pastor identified some interesting points about being busy. He said the excuses busy people commonly use are: "There just aren't enough hours in the day" and "This is just a busy season for me now," when in fact 24 hours is long enough for a day, we just mismanage our time a lot and give priority to things that are not that important, and there is always going to be something occupying your time so to say that this particular 'season' is the reason why you're not operating at your full potential is not a good enough excuse. He also said that busy people are broken people who use activities to fill voids and that society tells us that being busy is always better."

So while I was listening, I took an account of the activities I am involved in and thought about my reasoning for being in them. I just think that I am so busy because there are so many different things that I am interested in. I don't think that I'm 'broken' or trying to 'fill any voids' with my activities because at the end of the day I like what I do.

Throughout a single week I teach Bible Study, serve on the Student Government Diversity Committee, sing in the Choir, do Praise Dance, play the sax at Winter Sports games, and report for Buckeye TV. I was super involved in high school too so being busy is nothing new to me. I still make time to chill with friends and family and take plenty of naps!

It can be tough saying "NO" sometimes, but I do know how to take a break. I can't just be a resume-filler and relationship destroyer. There's a balance to everything in life, I just have to work on finding it!

After Church, I only had to help at the Voters Registration Table for less than 20 minutes, and I was still able to make it to the on-campus Church service and eat with some of my friends all before my Buckeye TV meeting! Yeah, sure it sounds like a lot, but God works it all out every time.
