Sororities, Groups, and Events

A lot of my friends just crossed into a sorority, and I always get people that ask me if I will ever do so. I probably would, but I think my Mom would disown me. She's always preached about being a part of "Me Phi Me" So once I got to college that was not my focus at all, and if ever I did decide to join I would have to be able to give myself and my mom 3 clear-cut reasons why I want to be in a sorority. But I never could come up with enough. If I said Networking, my mom would come back with how I can't rely on a group to network for me because I trust that God is my main network who sets up opportunities for me as well as my family, friends and whoever I meet, and if the Networking was so hot for these groups then everyone in a sorority would have the best jobs. And when I used Sisterhood as a reason, she said, "You already have real sisters."

So I stopped trying, and this year when I considered it, none of close friends really wanted to, and not that I'm unwilling to meet new people, but it's always better to go into something with a friend. Ultimately, I had to decide if joining a sorority was going to be a pro or a con for my Senior year. I'm already over-involved as it is so basically if it's not a Journalism society or something dealing with Christians or my other hobbies: singing, dancing, playing the Sax, or being involved in politics, I can't do it. Because my heart's not going to be totally there, and I won't be able to make all their events.

Speaking of events, The National Association of Black Journalists finally put an event on this year. We were struggling just trying to meet up let alone organize an entire event because everyone is so busy with their newspapers, magazines and TV shows. Our President is The Lantern editor, the Secretary is the managing editor, the Vice President is over the OSUnity Magazine and writes for the Columbus Post, and then there's me as Treasurer with all my involvement. Last year when NABJ formed, we were all so ecstatic to have this group on campus as a way to unite journalists with diverse backgrounds, but this year I realized that OSU doesn't have that many journalists anyway. Maybe it's because our program lacks adequate funding or the proper training. We essentially on take 3 actual journalism classes out of the 10 required for the major. Even when I tried to look up all the OSU journalism minorities on Facebook, couldn't find more than 15 people!

But we managed to put on a Student-Athletes Media Panel where Football Players: Malcolm Jenkins, Anderson Russell, and Donald Washington talked about how they felt minority athletes are covered in the news today. We didn't get a big crowd, but I guess you had to be an athlete or a journalist to really care. All the people I tried to get to come said atheltes are talked about enough on campus. But NABJ focused on how these college athletes are portrayed and represented in the media, and it was a nice discussion.

Looks like I'm going to be a Director for the Student Outreach Committee for the Undergraduate Student Government next year! I just got the position this week after I applied and did an interview. There will be 4 of us working to implement various diversity programs, community service projects, helping student organizations and informing people about USG. So this will be exciting since I've been a part of the committee for 3 years and now I get to direct it.

I also will be a T.A. (Teaching Assistant) next year for The Lantern class getting paid $10 an hour! Although the staff was a little upset that I didn't apply to be an Editor, they were glad that I would still be involved in the newspaper. The only thing is, we will be having a totally new Advisor for The Lantern next year so who knows who this person will be and what vision they'll bring to the paper, and furthermore what kind of assignments will they have me do!?
