Bill Nye!
Today I went to see Bill Nye the Science Guy (for free!). Apparently, there were so many people people interested in seeing him that they gave out more tickets and switched the lecture to a gym in the RPAC.
The place was pretty packed, and I could tell everyone was excited. We were all about to see our childhood hero. When he finally went (ran) to the stage, everyone cheered and stood up to applaud. It was so weird to see him in person. He looked a little redder, and talked a little hoarse in the beginning, but overall, it was the same Bill Nye that we all loved.
What made his humor work well is that he had humor of all levels. Kids could get a kick out of his wacky voice changes, but there was a lot of humor for us as college kids, including subtle science jokes (unobtainium), relating to the audience, ironic literary reversals, puns, and also completely surprising actions (climbing onto the podium). I think everyone thoroughly enjoyed his presentation, which, by the way, was about how we, as students, have a great opportunity to shape the future. I agree that we do, and we need people like him to remind us once in a while.
