rush, rush

It has been another busy week, thus far! Some scattered thoughts and goings-on...

- have been working on my resume (I'm a first-time resume writer!) .. plan to take it to the Arts & Sciences Career Services next week to go over it with someone and make changes .. after final changes are made, I'm going to apply for an internship that I'm not even sure is still available (I should definitely know this) but anyway, I REALLY WANT IT (fingers are crossed)!

- got hired & had orientation for Cord Camera!

- apartment plans are still in the works ... I wish I could just get everything over with!

- laughed out loud so many times last night as I was reading Running With Scizzors by Augusten Burroughs

- am really intrigued by the fact that my design 200 book (Cradle to Cradle by William McDonough and Michael Braungart) is made entirely from plastic .. thus far, it's a really interesting look at how we use our resources and how we could be using them, & responsible design, to protect our Earth

- got an A on both my design 200 essay and exam .. got a B on my human nutrition exam

- am dressing up as Janis Joplin for a dead celebrity-themed party this weekend & have the coolest costume ever (created entirely from pieces of clothing that were already part of my wardrobe .. I think that definitely speaks volumes about me, ha!)

- will likely pick up a minor in photography in the next week

- aside from the rain, the weather was lovely this week!

I've got lots of reading to get to, now... but here are some photos I've taken around the campus area in the last two years that really show the diversity in weather from quarter to quarter (spring is my favorite with autumn coming in a close second!)

winter 2006 (the Oval .. sans construction!)

spring 2006 (freshman year, my friends & I had Thursday picnics on the Oval .. definitely the highlight of spring quarter)

fall 2006 (on OSU vs Michigan game day - the view from the Schottenstein Center of Lane Ave. & the Shoe with all of the fans inside! -- I sold my ticket to that game because I was brooooooke .. and crazy, obviously.)

winter 2007 (the snow on W. 9th Avenue was ridiculous.)

spring 2007 (Thursday picnics on the Oval are now a tradition with a big following!)

PLANS!, and Advice 101

I survived one of the busiest weeks in a looooong time!

A bit of advice I feel compelled to share:
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING I'VE LEARNED IN COLLEGE THUS FAR IS TO DEVELOP A GREAT RELATIONSHIP WITH ALL OF THE ADVISORS IN YOUR DEPARTMENT/COLLEGE/SCHOOL. Advisors will not let you down and they are always available to help you solve the many frustrations you come across. I have been saved from oodles of mental breakdowns, thanks to all of the advisors (thus far, 6!) I've met with throughout my college experience. Because of my frequent e-mails, calls, and visits, I've become a recognizable face and my questions can often be answered in a matter of minutes. Advisors are a fantastic asset that no one should neglect. Even if you feel steady with your academic goings-on, it's still wise to check in with them. They can provide you with vital information that you might not read on a department website or course offerings bulletin.

Lost in Translation

My drawing teacher has been advising the class to "do their best" and "work hard" lately. I always try to do my best, so I wasn't worried about anything. Yesterday we started a mapping assignment, which entailed using grid-like lines to line up objects in proportion within a still-life. I was pleased with my work and planned on taking it home this weekend because I was proud and wanted to show it to my family.

In class today, my teacher quietly approached me, asking to see my drawing from yesterday. I thought maybe she wanted to point out something I could correct on it or work on, buuuuuuut, she told me she wanted to enter it into an undergraduate foundation art competition. I know she chose a few others from the class, and that there are probably a bunch of entries from students from various art classes all across campus. The winners will be chosen by a jury of the owner of the Mahan Gallery, the owner of another gallery, and someone from OSU...I think. I'll have to find out for sure. So, anyway, that's pretty exciting. I haven't been able to take many art classes thus far at OSU because I've been trying to knock out GECs since I started school six quarters ago (has it really been that long already?!?!?!) but it's really refreshing to be able to do so. And now that I have a new major in design, I probably won't be able to get enough! Art classes are absolutely the highlight of my week. Being recognized for something I really love doing also makes it worthwhile.

Oh, and one last thing. My teacher is Korean and while her English is pretty good, it's not perfect. ...Since I was named after my mom, I go by my middle name rather than my first (which is what mom goes by) .. it's always a bit confusing on the first day of class as teachers go through the roster and I almost forget to respond when my name is called, because I literally do not respond to "Jessica." I guess she'd written out the tag for my drawing with the name Jessica and realized I had already written Kate on the back, and she was really confused. I explained to her that Jessica is my mom's name and that I was named after her and so I don't go by it, but rather my middle name, etc. and I think I confused her even more. Stuff like that gets lost in translation, but I think she got the message that I go by Kate, so that's good. I once had a teacher refuse to call me Kate because he thought I was lying and randomly decided to be called Kate. Hmmm...right.

Ok, ok, this really is the last thing I have to say at 2 in the morning: I had a job interview on Thursday and I'm waiting to hear about it. Fingers crossed!
