These are things I miss.

Shadow. And leaves. Spending all day sitting in a leaf pile. I miss fall.

Taking walks down to the lake... with a sweatshirt and gloves, but enjoying the brisk autumn air. Floating wooden 'ships' down the stream at the park. Bike rides. Feeding the horses. I miss my road.

The old First Baptist Church. Stained glass windows. Bell tower. Passages behind the pulpit and baptismal. Sunday School. The old kitchen. The basement. Awana. All-nighters. The youth room and old sanctuary. The new sanctuary and the overflow. Not sitting with parents, playing the dot game during the sermon. Trying to sneak off to 'help' with the nursery. The 'prison cages' in the nursery. The elephant slide. The Agape room. The couch in the womens bathroom. Pastor Turner's office. The hexagonal room where we met with the elders to talk about being baptised. Pageants. We Like Sheep. Weddings. Potlucks. Coming early when Daylight Savings time ends, getting a surprise trip to McDonalds to spend time before church really starts. Being welcomed and handed a bulletin. Used for drawing pictures. Standing on the steps to find parents after church. Always talking. Always talking. Playing in the parking lot, on the 'swinging thing'/handrail outside, being pushed into bushes, hiding behind the sign. Walking back to the car by the post office. I miss this church.

Performing. Singing, being in costume. Messing around backstage. Messing around in the upper levels of the auditorium. Missing these friends. Tech week. The infamous and hellish Sunday practice before a performance. Pulling off a Friday night performance without a glitch, on a hope and a prayer, half the cast sick. Drama... onstage and off. SO much drama. Cast party. Everyone sign my program. Cast tshirst and wear-your-costume-to-school day. Missing class to get pictures taken. Missing class to help with the set. Oh the set. Missing class just because. Lights. Sound check. Britney Spears mics. Throat-coat. Green room. Scandals. Dressing room dance parties. So much excitement and comraderie. I miss this.

Allegan Chamber Choir. Top three in state. Best choir director and friend. Drama. Fun. Choir trips. Singing for the old people. Making fools of ourselves, but somehow impressing everyone. Not being prepared. Always pulling it off. Practice rooms. Sightreading. Sightreading upside down. Stupid judges. Hateful judges. Stories about songs. Homeland. Red Red Rose. The Awakening. Rocking the house - John Van loved us. Not drinking caffeine (it does THIS to your vocal chords). Everything. Soprano bonding. Altos can be tenors. Solfege. Every competition. Recruiting. Singing telegrams. Womens choir. The glory days. Ave. Toronto. Grand Rapids. Chaos. Drama. Not wanting to practice. Substitute teachers were a disaster. Drama. Choir president, elections. Secret Santa. 4 years of hardwork and love. I miss choir.

Beechpoint. My childhood. I miss this, and cookies.

Above all, I miss simplicity.

Jesus Ist Besser

In my New Testament class, we've been going through the book of Hebrews. Yesterday's class convicted me more than the past... twenty sermons I've heard at any church or chapel.

Hebrews details how Jesus is... better.

He's better than angels
He's better than men
He's better than Abraham
He's better than Moses
He's better than Aaron
He's a better Priest
He's a better Promise
He's a better Sacrifice
He's a better Covenant
He's... Better.

That's how the author of Hebrews presents it to the Jewish Christians who were perhaps rethinking their devotion to a faith that caused them such suffering and persecution. If they went back to being straight Jewish Jews, life would be so much easier. BUT, they are reminded, JESUS is BETTER than anything they were offered in their previous faiths.

My professor, Tom Allen, then turned to us and gave us this challenge: If a nonbeliever came up to you and asked you how is Jesus BETTER than a life of sin, a life lived for personal pleasure and instant gratification... what would you say? Why did YOU choose Jesus? Is He REALLY better?

Wow. And since we as Christians in America (a "Christian" nation), we suffer little to no persecution and little to no suffering for our faith. The most we 'suffer' is: "So-and-so laughed at me..." or "I'm not popular, I'm not cool because I'm a Christian..." Well, that's lame. That's not persecution. True, the tides are turning a bit for us: legislation being passed that outlaws speaking against such sins as homosexuality will make it increasingly scary and dangerous to be a vocal Christian. Who knows, though? Jesus guarantees persecution for embracing His way of life. We've had it easy. And we haven't been taking advantage of that. American Christians could use a little persecution. What a purification that would be for our churches! The lukewarm Christians (those Jesus says He will spit out of His mouth) will either be inspired to do MORE, or will abandon the faith.

Consider the brothers and sisters of the Church in China. As Christianity is illegal, those that have come to faith do so with extreme consequences. Their faith is not a leisure activity, a country club to join. They must be sincere and genuine believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, or they would have just chosen the easy way.

Back to Mr Allen's challenge, though. I fear that many Christians would have no answer for a nonbeliever. Because as they are living their lives (lukewarm as all get out) there is no indication of a Jesus who is BETTER. They are living lives of sin. Their lives are no different than the unbeliever who is asking them.

They have no way of answering that
He's a better Peace than drugs or alcohol - His peace is lasting, beyond all understanding
He's a better Joy and Satisfaction than any pleasure coming from sin will ever be
He's a better Friend than your best friend - He will never backstab or accuse
He's a better Father than your dad - He never makes mistakes and never lashes out in anger
He's a better Comfort than your mom, or any number of pounds of ice cream and chocolate
He's a better Judge - offering mercy and grace, but will always hold you accountable
He's a better Brother than your brother - will always be there to support you and guide you
He's a better Love than any relationship could ever be - it is eternal, unchanging, unconditional
He's a better Confidence than any popularity could ever bring
He's a better Plan - life with meaning, with purpose; we can know who we were, who we are and where we're going.

They have no way of answering an unbeliever because... they haven't experienced this Better Jesus for themselves.

How would you answer?

Remember Remember...

(A preface to this blog: I'm sorry, I just couldn't help myself. I tried to think of another topic I could write about, but... I couldn't help it. I just NEED to address this. For my own sake. So please just bear with me.)

"HAPPY GUY FAWKES DAY!' Can I say how irritating this has become? Frustrating to me, as one who loves LOVES history and loves LOVES England, that Americans have completely misconstrued this 'holiday'.

Did you know that this British 'holiday' is not celebrating Guy Fawkes, but rather his death? He committed treason. And was consequently hung, drawn and quartered - the most horrendous and humiliating of executions. This day is a reminder that treason will not be tolerated. Ugh how Americans have taken this to rally behind the underdog - Hooray for anarchy! Stick it to the man! Ummm... no. That's not what this is about. The bonfires are used to burn his effigy, not to commemorate what might have happened had his 'gunpowder plot' been successful.

Consider for yourself.

Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t'was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli'ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England's overthrow;
By God's mercy he was catch'd
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
And what should we do with him? Burn him!

"I know of no reason why gunpowder treason should ever be forgot." Oh, it's been forgot all right.

P.S. I don't mean to be preachy, I honestly don't. But... come on. I find it sad when people celebrate the idea of anarchy. Romans 13:1-4.

Happy Reformation Day!

(Yep, Luther livin large.)

In Church History, we are now (finally!) focusing our study on the Protestant Reformation. THIS is what I've been waiting for! While the early church fathers are interesting, and the early issues the church faced are incredibly important, I cannot keep Athanasius from blending into Ambrose... or Cyril and Clement and Irenaeus and Ignatius... from Antioch, Alexandria, Rome ROME ROME. So HOORAY for Luther, Zwingli and Calvin!

Interesting about Luther, though. Sure I watched the movie with Joe Fiennes... but in studying Luther as himself: his personality in contrast with his theology, his spirit in concord with his protest, he is perhaps not the quintessential Christian model of righteous living. He made mistakes. He spoke controversially, and often lived controversially. He is, though, a characteristic, outspoken, totally unreserved Christian - going through the typical highs and lows of the faith. Something we neglect to remember sometimes: Christians suffer. Christians struggle with faith, with trust. The supposed "Health and Wealth Gospel" cannot answer for that. Some gospel. REAL hope and REAL truth is found in Christ alone. Solo Christo.

We may struggle against Him, in our fallen human state - thinking we hold the answers, are capable of holding the answers, though the secret things belong to God (Deut 29:29). Real hope and REAL truth is found in the Person of Jesus Christ. And if we, like Luther, find our foundation in this truth, the joy is ours.

Consider with me the lyrics to Luther's famous hymn. Treasure these truths!

A mighty fortress is our God, A bulwark never failing;
Our shelter He, amid the flood Of mortal ills prevailing.
For still our ancient foe Doth seek to work us woe;
His craft and pow'r are great, And, armed with cruel hate,
On earth is not his equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving would be losing;
Were not the right Man on our side, The Man of God's own choosing.
Dost ask who that may be? Christ Jesus, it is He;
Lord Sabaoth is His name, From age to age the same,
And He must win the battle.

And tho' this world, with devils filled, Should threaten to undo us;
We will not fear, for God hath willed His truth to triumph through us.
The prince of darkness grim -- We tremble not for him;
His rage we can endure, For lo! his doom is sure,
One little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly pow'rs -- No thanks to them -- abideth:
The Spirit and the gifts are ours Thro' Him who with us sideth.
Let goods and kindred go, This mortal life also;
The body they may kill: God's truth abideth still,
His kingdom is forever.

What A Week

Wow. So if ever my head could explode, it would have been on Tuesday.

I wish I could scan a page out of my daily planner, so you could SEE the sheer number of things I needed to do.

Anyway. Due to the incredible stress and busyness of this week, I haven't had time to write the blog I had intended to (something far more interesting, I'm afraid)... But this apology/explanation will have to suffice.

I'm planning to graduate a semester early for my major - in exactly four years as opposed to four and a half. To do so, I need to be accepted into the School of Education by December 1. This, I just found out. Want to know what being accepted into the School of Ed, and then graduating in May '11 rather than December '11 entails?

1) Taking/PASSING the Praxis I exam.
2) Submitting my portfolio for review. (I began a portfolio my freshman year, but the account expired... so I've gotta figure THAT whole thing out again.)
3) Filling out an application to the School of Ed.
4) Registering for, taking, and PASSING 36 credits of classes for the next two semesters - if I don't get into these classes... well... we'll build that bridge when we get there.
5) Taking two courses at community college (a Communications elective, and an Arts/Science elective - 'twill be fun/easy at KVCC) this coming summer - ruining my plans of working at a camp for another summer.
6) Practicum (classroom observation) in May '10, and student teaching in Spring '11.
7) Having enough money to take all these tests and get all of my background checks and fingerprintings done, AND stay in school, in class, with 18 credits...

Getting a little picture of my life right now? All so I can graduate next spring. Wow. My time at PBU is nearing its end. Now I've got to process how I feel about that.

Well. THAT is why I haven't been so up-to-date with my blog.

But all this to say... God is good. He is Jehovah Jireh - the LORD Will Provide. He is Jehovah Shalom - the LORD Our Peace. Praise ye the LORD! :)

Philippians 4:4-7. Check it out. It's my heartbeat for this week.

THESE are the people that call you, prompt you to visit, urge you to complete the oh-so-simple application (processing fee still waived until Dec 1!), and guide you through our sometimes labrynthine website. THESE are the pleasant people who answer the phone when you call with your questions, concerns, and interest.

"Thank you for calling Philadelphia Biblical University, this is So-And-So, how may I help you?" You have to have some respect for being able to say such a mouthful without stuttering. (Below--->This is NOT how we answer the phone. Ever.)

Did you know that I moonlight as a TeleCounseling supervisor, every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:30-9:30? It is one of the rare joys that I have as a PBU student and Nexus team member to work with my friends and recruit students to our school two nights a week. It really is a blessing, being able to overhear some of the conversations with prospective students. Oftentimes, I'm encouraged tp hear of a highschooler's heart for the Lord and sensitivity to His will in their life--whether that means attending PBU or not, that's something that I want to help foster and be a part of! Once, my friend Tristan was able to actually share the Gospel with a girl on the phone, who had never heard of the Bible before. Not only was he able to outline the basics of God's love for us and His purpose in sending Jesus to die, he also encouraged her to find a church to attend, and got her email so they could keep in contact and she could ask any questions she could think of. What a blessing to overhear something like that. Sometimes funny things happen during TeleCounseling calls. During a call once, I was asked, "How many types of ducks does the PBU pond have?" ...I had an interesting time trying to answer that question. I think I just responded, without much hesitation, "Seven." ...Because 'seven' is my answer for just about everything. Haha, except when it comes to serious questions about school, obviously. :)

So... call in sometime! Talk to me, or one of my friends! Ask us your questions about what it's like to attend this awesome school of ours!

See? This is how friendly we are!!

Something pretty sweet about going to a university: people who know how to strum guitars, how to hit some drums, how to tickle the ivories, how to work a beat on the bass... and these people end up becoming friends. They jam together. They write a few songs. They play a few shows. They form a legit band.

Something pretty sweet about going to a biblical university: these people love Jesus, and their songs reflect that.

So here's to you, PBU bands.

Inherit the Fall

Into Exile

Viva la Victor

numerous rap and hip-hop artists (ever heard of Trip Lee, for one?)

and the one I want to highlight today:

Food For Sleep (Check them out at their website: http://www.myspace.com/foodforsleep)!

I went to a show they played this past weekend... at a church opening in Baltimore!

Here are a few pictures from the show!

The Chick-fil-a cow was definitely a fan. (I'm not a great fan of the cow, myself, but I'm not a fan of mascots. At all.)

My new favorite thing about our proximity to the city of Philadelphia:

THE PHILADELPHIA ZOO
(which is celebrating its 150th birthday this year!!)

This past Sunday was perhaps our last chance at summer weather, so my boyfriend and I hastened to take advantage of it... by going to the zoo!

(The concept of a zoo is kind of a strange one, if you really think about it - which I'm sure you know I'm fond of doing.)

But here are a few pictures that exemplify our day:

I paid toll by looking under seats, tearing apart my car... we didn't need it to go into the city, but we did for church. I just thought it was a cool picture. :)

It's PHILLY!

I found a dinosaur!!! ...Unfortunately, it was not living, but a statue. ...Meh, I'll take what I can get!

These two little froggies were so so cute. And bumpy.

IT'S A LION! KING OF THE JUNGLE! ...OR... THE ZOO!

These, like the dinosaur, weren't real. (Kevin's real, though. He's the man.)

I just wanted to be friends with this peacock... but... he would have none of it. Ah well.

Who'd've known that peacocks can fly?? Because this one did, and it freaked me out. But this is him, sitting prettily on the wall by the polar bears.

PENGUINS!!! (I almost wrote: *penguines*... like... *bovines*.)

Downtown Philly. Pretty.

...That they might be saved.

Brothers, my heart's desire and prayer to God for them is for their salvation.
- Romans 10:1.

------->>The Chosen. Israel. God's own nation He has claimed as His own.

Theirs is the adoption as sons: theirs the divine glory, the covenants, the receiving of the Law, the temple worship and the promises. Theirs are the patriarchs, and from them is traced the human ancestry of Christ, who is God overall, forever praised! Amen.
- Romans 9:4-5.

------->>But...

"ALL THE DAY LONG I HAVE STRETCHED OUT MY HANDS TO A DISOBEDIENT AND OBSTINATE PEOPLE."
- Romans 10:21, quoting Isaiah 65.

------->>Disobedient and obstinate, yes... However:

In the same way then, there has also come to be at the present time a remnant according to God's gracious choice.
- Romans 11:5.

------->AND (my hope!) -

[The Israelites] did not stumble so as to fall, did they? May it never be! But by their transgression salvation has come to the Gentiles, to make them jealous. Now if their transgression is riches for the world and their failure is riches for the Gentiles, how much more will their fulfillment be!
- Romans 11:11-12.

------->>And doesn't this make sense?

For if you were cut off from what is by nature a wild olive tree, and were grafted contrary to nature into a cultivated olive tree, how much more will these who are the natural branches be grafted into their own olive tree?
- Romans 11:24.

..................................................

As for me, I must admit that I often struggle with God over the fact that I was not born a natural Jew. That sounds strange, I realize. I want to be one of the original Chosen. I know I'm chosen, but they're more chosen. I'm jealous of them - that God might love them just a little bit more than He loves me.

BUT THEN I read passages like Romans 9:25 ('I WILL CALL THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, 'MY PEOPLE,' AND HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, 'BELOVED,' from the prophet Hosea) and Galatians 3:8 (The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, preached the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, "ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU." ). It makes me realize, I was always part of His plan! I'm reminded that I was always chosen. I was and am always loved!

So what a charge is put before me - a la Romans 11:11-12. God is using me (and His other chosen Gentiles) to draw His own people back to Himself. What a crucial role I am able to play as a result of my own Gentility...my goyishness! ...What a blessing! How beautiful, to be an aid in bringing about their completion as Jews! To bring the Chosen back to their Chooser.

I bless the LORD that He is sovereign and I am not. And I pray that I might be reminded of this, hour by hour, moment by moment. Who am I to question His plan and His purpose in my life?

(HAPPY ROSH HASHANAH 2009 - Sept. 18-20.)

Certainly Nothing To Sneeze At

Because EVERYONE seems to be getting sick. Change of season?

I'm fascinated with the origins of random words and phrases. Yes, I am, in fact, an English major. (Note the liberal and correct use of commas in that last sentence!) Sometimes I get such figures of speech or cliches stuck in my head, and I just think about them all the time. At least for a day. Today, the phrase is "nothing to sneeze at." Where did that come from? SORRY, 'From whence did that come?' ...Then shouldn't the phrase be, "Nothing at which to sneeze?" That's awkward. And I couldn't get it out of my head. So I did a little research. In this day and age, "research" is synonymous with "Google". (That is an important truth I hope you won't soon forget.) This is what I found:

According to AllExperts.com:

"The original expression was "not to be sneezed at," but the phrase has undergone various revisions over the years. Here is the best explanation I have found for the origin of the phrase:

This sounds like a wild tale. But I found the same origin in a couple of sources so I am pretty sure it's a fact.

NOT TO BE SNEEZED AT – “…People in older times imagined that a sneeze cleared the mind. It certainly gave them a feeling of exhilaration. Suddenly, 17th century Europe caught a craze for sneezing. It was considered the right thing to do in good society. Indeed, the more you sneezed, the more you proved yourself a member of the privileged class. To build up this new status symbol, all kinds of devices were used. It was soon realized that snuff caused sneezing. Therefore everyone who was someone carried with him a little box, containing a mixture of sneeze-producing herbs or tobacco. By drawing an ample pinch of it into the nostrils, a hearty sneeze resulted in no time.

Of course only the rich and idle had time to sneeze or could afford snuff. Hence the self-induced sneeze became synonymous with aristocratic living. If you were able to sneeze ‘on call,' you showed audibly your status in society. But one matter had still to be decided. Just to sneeze haphazardly was not good enough. There had to be a special occasion. Soon sneezing became part of men's conversation. You indulged in it whenever you wanted to show your disapproval of anything said or, even more so, your lack of interest in the matter discussed. A sneeze was an unmistakable way of saying politely ‘you bore me.' Consequently and logically, anything ‘not to be sneezed at' was something really worthwhile.” From “How Did It Begin?” by R. Brasch (Pocket Books, New York, 1969).

I hope this answers your question.

Ted Nesbitt"

Now, for my interpretation of the 'data'. (Note my British-English use of quotation marks INSIDE the punctuation. It's more sophisticated, you see.) It seems poor logic to say that sneezing suddenly caught on as a fad among the upperclass, and then the act of sneezing was brought about by the use of snuff and the like... rather, does it not make more sense that the upperclass took to their snuff, creating the sneeze, and then because sneezing was a result of the upperclass, elite lifestyle, sneezing was a popular activity? I just think Mr Nesbitt got it backwards, is all. Beyond that, I feel his argument/research? is perfectly sound.

Google is a wonderful tool in, well, 'researching' the origins of trivial phrases such as the one noted above... but my favorite FAVORITE website to use for the origins of words is Etymonline.com. It's brilliant. For all you other English nerds out there (I'm trusting there are more of us! Keep hope alive!), the site documents the language influences, the changes in meaning, and sometimes the various phrases in which you will find said word. When I discovered this website in tenth grade, I spent three hours exploring all my favorite words and anything else that piqued my interest. Do it. It just may change your life as it has mine!

First Week... really?

So... talk about a wake-up call.

First week back at school feels like I'm already preparing for midterms. Is this just a harsh welcome to Junior year? Because it's going to be... most interesting, that's for certain!

Here's my schedule:

MWF:
9 AM - Church History with Prof. Eddy Field (I got 100% on the very first quiz, which is very promising!)
10 AM - CHAPELLLL YEAH!
11 AM - Issues in Contemporary Literature with Dr Jean Minto (already proving to be intense, we're going to be reading some really crazy stuff!)
12 PM - British Literature of the 16th and 17th Centuries with Dr RoseLee Bancroft (my favorite English prof, and my FAVORITE section of history of my FAVORITE country! What's not to love?!)
1 PM - New Testament with Pastor Allen (I got 105% on my first quiz yesterday! I cannot wait to see how much the Lord reveals to me through this class!)

Monday and Wednesday evenings at 8 PM:
Astronomy with Prof. Yoder the Elder (INTENSE! I'm in love with the night sky, and Cassiopeia is my favorite constellation. This class is going to be a stretch for me, but I'm going to do my best to think scientifically and mathematically in terms of... stars.)

Tuesday/Thursday:
11 AM - Educational Psychology with Dr Mac the Elder (We've only had this class once so far, Dr Mac hasn't been feeling well. But I look forward to this class, as it's my only Ed class this semester!)

All in all, a good schedule. But I don't know if you could pick up on it at all - I've got a LOT of reading on my plate this semester. Sometimes I'm just so grateful that English is my subject of choice, and therefore love reading more than almost anything. Just pray I have enough time in the day to complete all the reading that is necessary!

NEXUS TRAINING!

I'm not sure how much you all know about life in the Admissions Office, but it's basically my second home apart from my dorm room in Heritage Hall. And this week, all the new and returning student workers are back on campus for TRAINING!!! Oh yeah! :)

Training this year consists of meetings (in the most comfortable chairs on campus in the Bible and Israel room), team-building activities, and.... a Trenton Thunder baseball game!

YES and the summer's over!

Just some final highlights before I head back to school tomorrow:

1) Family vacation in Okoboji, Iowa for a week!

2) My boyfriend Kevin and I are finally reunited after a 2 month separation... He flew out to spend a four days with me and my family in Michigan! While in MI, we visited Crane's Orchard and Restaurant (note the freshly made apple cider!) and Lake Michigan at a beach in South Haven! Gorgeous weather!

3) No pictures for this one yet... a thirteen hour drive from Michigan to Washington DC to drop off my older brother at his new apartment!
