Professor, School of Bible and Ministry

The Rhythm of the Seasons

It is a wonder to see the creation change right before your very eyes. Here in Philadelphia the trees are turning quickly. The leaves are falling with some trees completely bare. It is all very ordered and yet the trees present a patchwork of green, brown, orange, and red. There is a certain randomness to the whole. It reminds me of Ecclesiastes 3:11 - God has made everything beautiful in its time. Candide Reprisal

I finished Candide the other day and was surprised by the ending. The book discusses if one should be optimistic about the world in spite of all its evils or if one should be pessimistic about the world because of its many evils. In the end Candide and his friends find a nice place and establish a sort of commune. It seemed that Voltaire either didn't have an answer or decided to just make the best of life. I think for a Christian the cross of Jesus Christ is the place to start thinking about this question.
