Assistant Professor, School of Business and Leadership
Faculty Advisor and Sam Walton Fellow, Students in Free Enterprise

At one time in my life (my 20’s) I thought it was all about my achievements. Then one day I walked into a church near Stanford University and carved in wood in 3-foot high letters I read this verse: You are not your own, you are bought with a price (1Cor 6.19-20)... That changed everything for me. Now at PBU, I hold on to a verse every day, especially when I am weary — Phil 4.13: I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.

Anticipation

I wonder who anticipates the first day of classes more – students or faculty? A colleague mentioned that he never sleeps too much the night before classes and I can relate. The students were well-prepared today, having downloaded the syllabus from eLearning and most took notes as I introduced my speech class. Then there were a few who did not know how to navigate the PBU Intranet at all, and they seemed relieved when I anticipated their problem and brought a few printed copies of the syllabus to class. One student asked for directions about getting to her next class. I was glad she felt comfortable enough with me to ask. This is a bright-eyed group for 8:00 in the morning!

Will they enjoy one of our texts Made to Stick, as much as I did? My challenge will be to model communicating ideas memorably and with power so they can do the same in their speeches this semester.

The Students in Free Enterprise team organized a weekend retreat to plan this year’s community service activities. What a full weekend it was that included dinner at my home! It was a challenge for the team to participate the weekend before classes begin, but all the Cabinet attended. Their enthusiasm inspires me, especially the leadership of Clark and Brad in SIFE.
