Assistant Professor, School of Business and Leadership
Faculty Advisor and Sam Walton Fellow, Students in Free Enterprise

At one time in my life (my 20’s) I thought it was all about my achievements. Then one day I walked into a church near Stanford University and carved in wood in 3-foot high letters I read this verse: You are not your own, you are bought with a price (1Cor 6.19-20)... That changed everything for me. Now at PBU, I hold on to a verse every day, especially when I am weary — Phil 4.13: I can do everything through Christ who gives me strength.

Thankful

Gratitude for

*Sarah's modeling of servant leadership as project chairperson of the Career Fair.
*Students exhibiting caring and compassion in speech class by volunteering to present speeches early so others who struggle have more time to prepare.
*Rachel single-handedly organizing the Stamp Out Hunger campaign for SIFE to help restock the shelves at the nearby food bank.
*Twenty students signing up to help implement four community service grants for SIFE for next semester.
*December graduates sharing at business chapel that their internships and PBU courses have impacted their lives in remarkable ways.

Work ethic

At my internship visit yesterday, Kristin Cooney's supervisor commented that her work ethic was "fabulous... and rare." As I visit interns on the job, the themes often repeated in supervisor evaluations have become PBU distinctives: integrity, honesty and a strong work ethic. When secular organizations witness these qualities and more importantly, point them out as rather uncommon, our students begin to realize that these are valued competencies resulting from a biblical education combined with professional training in specific fields like business. I encourage students to continue to shine in a workplace dulled by complacency, self-absorption and mediocrity. It is no wonder our Career Fair next week sponsored by SIFE has attracted a record number 57 companies and nonprofit organizations eager to meet and employ our students.
