Hey everyone... my name is Heather. I am from Lockport, NY, right near Niagara Falls and Buffalo. I am a Senior here at PBU in the Dual Degree Counseling Program. Random fact about me... I love to make weird faces at people, especially if there is awkward eye contact!

a photographed commute to youthgroup and Horton Hears a Who...

So tonight was youth group, I work with the Junior High youth group as said earlier in my blog I think. I really enjoy it. There are a lot of people who work with the children's ministries at the same church so we usually ride together. The commute therefore is always interesting, we have six people, and since the six of us will not fit in any of our cars, we decided to split the gas for the school's ministry vehicle. So we all commute together and with six people it is usually pretty interesting, our trips can include deep conversations, general getting-to-know-each-other conversations, funny stories, rocking out to some song on the radio, calling my uncle for questions about taxes in GA for a school project and etc. Tonight the ride there consisted of a mini photo shoot in the backseat with Katie, so below is a picture from our little commute to youth group.

The rides to and from youthgroup are a really unique opportunity I think. Since we are a group of people that may or may not necessarily hang out on a regular basis at school, it is really cool to have a glimpse of what is happening in each others lives and to process what is happening together.

After youthgorup, I met up with some friends and we went and saw "Horton Hears a Who" at the movie theatre. There is a cinema near school that gives a student discount, so you pay 5 dollars for the movie which is pretty awesome. Its only on certain days though. It was a really cute movie... if you grew up reading that book like I did I am sure that you would love it too! Below is a picture of me and my friend Britt on our way home...we had a lot of fun!

Batman for president?

My friend Sam(antha) is an education major, so the other day she called me and asked me if I had to choose between 5 different superheros, which would I elect as President. She then asked me to put them in order, my decision was:
1) Captain Planet
2) Leonardo (I think it was Leonardo but it could have been a different TMNT)
3) Spiderman
4) Mr. Incredible
5) Wonderwoman

Captain Planet was my first choice because we would have a cleaner earth, and that would be pretty cool. I argued though that Batman should be running for President because he is way better than any other of the superheros. So out of those six; Captain Planet, Wonderwoman, Mr. Incredible, Spiderman, Leonardo and Batman, who do you think should be President and why?

By the way, since I forgot to tell you, the reason Sam was doing this project was because she was going to teach a lesson on election and thought it would be more fun to do it using superheros rather than real candidates- I agreed.

MIA...missing in action?

My parents are divorced, so me and my brothers have to split our holidays, we have gotten used to it, for the most part. So Sunday was Easter, and since classes resumed on Monday, me and my brother had to drive back to school on Sunday. It is a seven hour drive so this meant that we had to leave in the afternoon so that we could get back to school at a decent hour. We were at our dad's house in the morning, went to church with him, and then returned home to pack up the car and head to mom's house. We would then leave from mom's house to head back to PBU. Good plan right? Well... for whatever reason, I always get really tired when I am at my mom's house, so I laid down on the couch and put my glasses and my phone on the end table...I am a little forgetful by nature, so it came as no surprise when 45 minutes away from my mom's house my brother gets a call from my phone- I was not making this call. So the last couple of days I have been wandering school without my phone, it isn't a big deal, I don't like talking on the phone much anyways. I did discover that I use it alot for checking the time, therefore I have been late a couple of times. So my phone and my glasses should be arriving in the mail any day now... Funny how something so small becomes such a big part of your life. Someone was saying the other day that Americans are walking idol-makers, I think it might have been on one of the sermons me and my brother were listening to on the ride home. Its true though, we are walking idol makers... and sometimes we don't even realize it until that thing goes missing. How many things am I making my idols that I am not aware of?

guitar-hero dad

So today was my first full day home since January because I went to Israel over my Spring Break. One of mine and my brother's friends (have I mentioned yet that my brother goes to PBU too?) came over tonight and brought with him his guitar hero game. So somehow, after a lot of coaxing, we convinced my dad to try it. So below is a picture of my dad trying guitar hero...

Green Milkshakes...

So tonight me and Karly decided that we should celebrate St. Patrick's day. I had a lot of homework to do tonight and Karly had some stuff going on too, so we decided whatever we did it couldn't be a long "celebration". After some contemplation, we decided to go to Chick-fil-a and get some green milkshakes. So we did, and we listened to Irish music on the way there and back. It was a great stress reliever and it was really exciting to hear about how the missions trip that Karly went on over spring break with PBU went and how God is working in both of our lives as far as who we are becoming. It was a very encouraging moment of my Monday.

a really long day.

Today might literally have been the longest day of my life. I am home now, safe and sound. We got up around 5:45a.m. in Israel and our plane left around 11am. We then were on the plane for 12 hours... and returned to school around 8pm. It was a little exhausting and really nice to see familiar places again and sleep in my own bed. The trip was incredible and the way that it put together the geography and events from the Bible taught me so much. There was so much information on the trip that I will probably never remember all of it.
The trip was a growing trip for me too... I had started on the trip expecting a spiritual revival of my heart. I expected to come home so on fire for God after seeing where He had done so much. I neglected to remember that He has done so much in me and I carry it with me always...I went to Israel looking for Christ, a spiritual revival, seeking the things of the Bible. I found a lot of rocks, some vultures, places without the people I was used to associating them with. Apparently I went looking for a movie of the Bible... and I found the setting. This did not ruin the trip for me... and as I said earlier I learned so much, and God taught me so many little lessons in things like vultures and rocks. If you are interested about more details of my trip I would love to tell you sometime, just ask!

In Jerusalem..

little.jpg
This is one of my favorite pictures from the trip. It is of two little boys rushing home from school. I think that one of the things that we often forget when we think of Jerusalem is that it is a real city, with real MODERN day people living in it. For me, at least, I was unable to get this picture of Biblical times Jerusalem out of my head, but there are people living there today...with electricity, cell phones, and newspapers.

some early morning visitors...

So on our last day at the Dead Sea, I was in the bathroom and I had left the door open on the balcony because the breeze felt nice. Out of the corner of my eye I saw a something move and I began to wonder whether or not someone had come into my room. Abby was gone at the moment so I should be the only one there. Well, I walk in to the room, to discover a bunch of birds had decided to come and keep me company in my room, once I walked into the room they flew back onto the balcony... where I proceeded to feed them the complimentary dates that the hotel had put in our room. So this is a picture of my early morning friends, the sunset over the Dead Sea, and my jeans drying over our balcony.

Psalms, a Pepsi and the Dead Sea

ein%20gedi.jpg

So today we spent some time at Ein Gedi, (I hope that I spelled that right!). This is where David fled from Saul and he wrote a lot of the Psalms here. Its easy to imagine David pondering God in this beautiful place, it is so peaceful. Even when there were a ton of school kids here on field trips it has an atmosphere of calm and peace.

Later in the day, we went back to our hotel. Below is a picture of me and my friends, Kevin and Patrick. We decided that a good way to enjoy the beautiful day and scenery would be to enjoy some pepsi on the balcony of our hotel.

We floated on the Dead Sea too... that was a lot of fun.... the water at the Dead Sea has so much salt in it that it has a different consistency than regular water, it is almost slimy or oily feeling.
