It is an absolutely beautiful day outside. Most people on campus have dragged a blanket to the grass out there and are soaking up the sun while they study. Some have their laptops out there, but I have a strange paranoia about letting the battery get lower than 99% so I'm blogging from my room (with plans to head out in a moment...).
PC has a really great campus for sitting outside. There's walls and benches everywhere, and there's lots of grass you can use, too.

Still, it is finals week and some students have already finished exams. My neighbor just moved out this morning and things are starting to feel very surreal.
What has also struck me about this is that, I knew all the parents of my friends at home.
When I meet my PC friends' parents, though, it seems strange. I know they have families (who they speak of often), but I can't help but think of them as singular people. To suddenly have other faces to associate with that friend is...odd?
I'm not sure how to describe it.
Don't get me wrong, it's not a bad thing, and all of the family members I've met so far have been very nice, but it's just a strange phenomenon of college life.
I hate to sum it up this way but you'll see what I mean :)

I can't believe that I'm finished with freshman civ!
While I envy the sophomores, who are completely finished now, I'm still in shock that I'm halfway through it!
It was a lot of work, yes, but I have to admit that it helped me put a lot of things together. A lot of times, when you learn history, you learn it in snippets and the time line is broken in some places. I do feel that many events have been put in a better context for me; some things make more sense now that I better understand all of what was happening at the point in time.
I know I've mentioned this before, but I also related much of my civ material to lessons I was learning in other classes, which makes for great, supplementary information.

Still, I'm really in disbelief about this!
I am two papers and an exam away from being finished with my freshman year!

...Wait. What?

It's really crazy! Wasn't I just applying? Didn't I just have orientation?
The month of March really dragged by, but then all of sudden we hit April and it's been pedal to the medal ever since!
I can only imagine how the seniors feel!

Also, yesterday was the awards ceremony for ROTC. Pretty much everyone was recognized in some way and I was really impressed by how great everyone looked in their formal uniforms. Most people received a new ribbon to add to their rack!
So congratulations to all my fellow ROTC cadets on a great year and the well-deserved recognition.
Since I live so close, though, I'm definitely planning on coming back to see the seniors get commissioned as 2nd lieutenants in the US Army!

Until then!

Class registration for next semester recently having gone by, it's probably a good idea for me to talk about it. When I came for Orientation last summer (wow--almost a year ago already!), Orientation was one of, if not the last, part of the event. Everyone was nervous because, let's be honest, none of us knew a thing about what classes to pick. We were all already pre-registered for freshman Civ, and those of us with majors were all pre-registered in the "101" class of our field. Since freshman take only four classes a semester (more, with permission), that left just two choices to be made. I know that doesn't seem like a lot, but somehow it appears to be momentous at the time.
The orientation leaders gave a nice class on how to use PC's online registration and management system, Cyberfriar. They showed us how to navigate the books that list the available classes and other such materials.
Still, I was nervous (and I wasn't the only one) because as incoming freshmen, you're the last to register. Mostly, though, the upperclassmen have already taken, in their academic career, most of the classes new freshman want/need so there's always space available somewhere.
Of course, things worked out fine for me (like they will for you)!

Also, if you hit a snag and there's a class you must have that's all full, just politely talk to your academic adviser or the secretary of the department running the class. That's what happened to me this semester, with my theatre classes (since I just recently declared it as another major). I got a lot of great advice and help, though, and by the end of the registration day I was enrolled in both the classes I need. I'm very, very excited about both of them!

Also, for those in the class of 2012 who have decided on PC (!), don't forget to go on Angel and take your math and language placement tests! If it's the same as last year (I'm not sure), the language one isn't mandatory, but you never know when you might need to take a language class so it's always beneficial to know what level you need to be in!
Also, if it's the same as last year, you'll get the results of your placement tests at Orientation!

Best of luck to everyone!

Looking at my schedule, I realized I have a few days between some of my exams, so I was pondering how I was going to spend the rare day off.
Frankly, there are quite a few options. There's always something going on around campus (this week, for example, the Things for Thursday activity is a chair massage; how convenient right before finals!). Of course, there's plenty to do in Providence, too. Everyone loves going to the mall (Providence Place) and I don't know anyone who can resist eating on Federal Hill (which is well-renowned for its fabulous food--mostly Italian).
(I actually saw Scott Seseske, who also blogs for the admissions office, at Andino's one night but I don't think he saw me!)
Thayer Street is also a fun place to walk, eat, and shop. A lot of students like to go to RISD's Art Museum over there, too.

Clearly, there's a lot to do and I bet you can understand why I'm so excited to have a day off!

It's really great and the environment is incredibly supportive.

Also, this is the last week of classes!
WHERE did my freshman year go?
Even though things are winding down now, I'm still incredibly busy. There are a few final papers that have to be turned in, and of course, exams, but my roommate and I are taking the night tonight to just hang in and watch some movies.

I never really got the chance to tell you guys about ROTC's military ball, (which was lots of fun and a fantastic opportunity to let their [short] hair down) and already, plans are being made for the commissioning ceremony! I'm incredibly excited for the seniors, so I can only imagine how they feel. Also in ROTC news, a Patriot Battalion alum, Major Mike Manning, is the commencement speaker this year! It's quite an honor for our department so have such a successful member return to share his insights.

I also haven't had a chance to tell you about all the fun stuff that went out around here for April Fool's Day. Most notably, the school paper, the Cowl, put out a special edition that day: the Scowl. Everyone enjoyed that!

Last but not least, PC's latest production, Funny Girl, is wrapping up this weekend and carrying rave reviews along with it. That's no surprise, however, as the show has been passionately performed and cared for.

I don't know when I'll be able to write again; next weekend is this semester's FTX with ROTC (click here and head to the post from October 1st to read about last semester's) and I have lots to do before then!

      Wow!
Sorry for the long delay there, everyone.
I kept trying to get this great video to work on here--PC's male singing group, Special Guest, did Valentine Song-o-grams for people this past holiday and I was lucky enough to have my camera with my when my friend received hers.
So as soon as I can get that working, I'll put it up here for all of you to enjoy, too.

I was also very busy, that week, because I had several of my exams before spring break. A lot of hours were spent studying!

Now, however, I am very sad because spring break is over.
We have ours quite a bit earlier than everyone else because, being a Catholic school, we also get time off for Easter (which I am now looking forward to). So none of my friends at other schools were vacationing at the same time, but that's alright with me because I finally had a week to catch up on all the movies I've wanted to watch and the books I've wanted to read.
A lot of people and their friends from here traveled (Europe seemed to be a popular destination this year), so they all had fun, too.

The advantage that I have is that is that, when all my other friends have their spring breaks, they'll be coming home to RI--and I'm right up the road so I'll still be able to see them!

For now, though, it's back to the grind.
Just two more months!
Last day of classes is May 1st!
...Not that I'm REALLY looking forward to Summer or anything...

So it really struck me the other day that I am in my second semester at college! Holy cow, that went by relly quickly, I have to say. How is it that today is already February 11th!?

This week is going to be really crazy, too. A prospective student/ROTC cadet is coming to stay with me, so I am excited to show her all that PC has to offer and all the cool things we do in ROTC.

I have a Civ paper due Wednesday that I may or may not have started...
ha...
...REALLY hope my seminar professor isn't reading this...

I am pretty well on top of the rest of my work, though. I'm a little ahead in my English and Political Science class readings, though I've yet to figure out what I am going to do my Poli Sci research project on (and, to make myself sound even more organized (ha), the bibliography is due Friday).

Despite my recent and uncharacteristic time management issues, I will still be making time to go Build a Bear tomorrow--how could I pass it up when my inner child can be appeased for a mere $3?

Also, my neighbor is being serenaded on Wednesday night for Valentine's Day and I plan to be there to hear it. I'll update later on which group did it because the name escapes me right now...

On Thursday, I'll probably go make a valentine in Slavin...

AND SATURDAY IS THE BIG ONE:

MILITARY BALL!

Just think: In exactly a week, I'll be able to report back with all the fabulous details!

To say that I am excited would be quite the understatement :)

So yesterday was Ash Wednesday, which was, of course, well observed here at PC. There was no meat in the cafeteria, which I thought was really conveniant because then I didn't have to sit there and go, "Hmm...what's left?"
Another great conveniance was that I still was able to receive my ashes despite my ridiculously busy Wednesday schedule. There were many masses during the day that I could attend and one of the friars even came to my dorm. He gave a very interesting talk about why we receive ashes, don't eat meat, and sacrifice things for lent, and then he distributed ashes to everyone there. The whole thing was great and I really enjoyed it.

Sorry for the short post but I don't want to be late for Civ...
Have a good day!

Hey, all, sorry for the delay! Things have been so busy around here, lately! I don't have any major projects, but I have some upcoming papers so I'm running around trying to get a lot of little things done before the wave hits. There are lots of meetings to attend lately, some paperwork to get signed in this building, and turned in in another building, etc... There is always lots of reading for homework, so it's a test of time management to get all of it done.

Also, pretty soon everyone's going to have to decide their living arrangements for next year. I'll probably get the official deadline at the floor meeting tomorrow. Whatever it is, I already know what I'm doing, thank goodness!
More on all that later :)

So I actually should run; I have to be at work in a bit and I have some things to quickly finish up before I head out.

So, in talking to a recruit about what she thought the pros and cons were of joining ROTC, I discovered that most of the cons had nothing to do with her--they were mostly the result of the people around her.
Having never experienced an adversity to my being in ROTC from my friends or family, I was pretty shocked by this.
Her friends had their misgivings, and her roommates were especially wary. How is her joining going to affect them?
Well, simply, it's not.
The only changes that they'll see in their lives are these:

1. They might catch a glimpse of some uniforms hanging up in her closet/see her in uniform sometimes
2. They might hear her alarm clock go off a little earlier in the morning, at which point they could just roll over and go back to sleep while she heads out to PT.

And that's the extent of it. Many people in ROTC have roommates who have nothing to do with the military and it's not a big deal at all. My roommate doesn't care one iota (in fact, she thinks it pretty cool because she can learn about it).

Her roommates were also concerned that it was also going to be a lot easier for her (and them, by extension) to get into trouble.
No.
It's not like there's a drill sergeant who follows cadets around all day; first and foremost, we are students--especially those on scholarship!
And if a cadet were to get in trouble somehow, why on earth would ROTC punish his or her roommate/s?

Finally, they were worried that, by joining ROTC, she was somehow going to be changed.
Ok, maybe people get a little more organized or develop better time-management skills, but we're not a bunch of robots. I would even go so far as to say that we're one of the most dynamic groups on campus; so many different people with varying interests, majors, ages, backgrounds, and more join.
To get an outside perspective, I called up my friends from home and asked them if I was any different now that I'm in ROTC. Frankly, they couldn't figure out where I had gotten such a strange notion from and told me that the answer was, obviously, "No."
Besides, it's not like we're void of fun in ROTC.

This Sunday, in fact, everyone's attending a promotion party for one of the cadre. It'll be held in McPhail's here on campus, and he's going to be promoted during half-time of the Super Bowl!
It's going to be really fun and everyone's looking forward to it!

Then, on February 16th, is the military ball!
But more to come on that gala later...
