Back in Full Gear!

The second week of classes is almost finishing up and let me tell you campus is in full gear!

So far my classes are great! My Honors Colloquium (The Bible and Contemporary Issues) is definately going to be my hardest class. Our professor informed us yesterday that we have to complete a 20 page research paper by the end of the semester...that was a curve ball...I should go get started now, haha. My American Fiction class is going great too - I handed in my first paper yesterday and we are currently reading One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which is so interesting; its about the 1960's take on insane asylums and society itself. Then there's Education, I have a presentation tomorrow, on my favorite book Atonement, I can just really tell that I'm going to learn a lot in that class. We are really focusing on getting up in front of the class and putting ourselves out there. Our in practicum lab portion of the class starts next week! Then there's Civ which, of course is the same, first seminar tomorrow!

Ambassadors is in full gear too. I gave an info session last Saturday, my first of the semester! We are also in the process of making congratulatory phone calls for those students who got accepted early action!

Tonight the FRIARS HOST UCONN..I can't wait. Talk to you all soon!

My Friends and I out to eat last Thursday at Unos!

Spring Semester 2010 is HERE!

Hello Everyone and welcome back for PC's Spring Semester 2010!

I cannot believe that winter break has already come and gone and it is now back to the books. Fall 2009 was a good semester, but with the spring semester here, that means one semester left of Civ for me, I really can't believe it. As far as my other classes go I am also taking an Honors Colloquium Bible and Contemporary Issues, U.S. Fiction Since 1960 and Principles of Education. It looks to be a tough course load but I think I will enjoy it. For my education class I will be able to create lesson plans and apply them in a real classroom setting so I am very excited for that!Tomorrow classes begin, I just have the colloquium, I am a little nervous because it is a 2 1/2 hour class with mostly upperclassmen that meets once a week, seminar-style, but hopefully it will turn out okay.

I'll let you know how my first week goes. Keep the questions coming!

Activities Wrap-Up

As promised here is my activities wrap-up update for the semester!

Last Wednesday was my last mentoring event of the semester which was the President's Council's Christmas Party. The young men of San Miguel who myself and 24 other PC students mentor, sang on stage at the Smith Center along side I-Cantori, one of PC's fabulous singing groups. Among the songs the boys sang was Silent Night, and what was really neat was they sang the last verse by themselves in Spanish, as Spanish is the primary language of almost all of the boys at San Miguel. It was great to listen to! Father Shanley also addressed the crowd and I-Cantori performed some songs on their own as well, followed by some yummy food, exchange of presents and then sadly the good-byes.

Wendesday night was the Dance Club Banquet for the fall semester. We gathered in McPhails to watch a great slide show presentation of our show, ate Chicken Parm and enjoyed each others company while some awards were given out.

Also last week was the Admission Ambassador Turkey Dinner, our last meeting of the semester! We gathered in a private part of the Alumni Food Court and were treated to a yummy holiday dinner while running over some last minute things for the semester! Our supervisors Scott and Becca read to us the top ten reasons why they are thankful for Ambassadors, it was great!

As for this week, it is the dreaded week of finals... but Civ was tackled yesterday and that is out of the way, now it is time for British Literature on Thursday!

Last week of classes!

Today was officially the last Monday of the semester, even though I still have so much work ahead of me. This semester truly seems to be the busiest for me by far.

I am currently in the process of working on my Final Paper for my Survey of British Literature II class which is due this Thursday. Our task is to take two novels that we have read over the course of the semester and draw a specific, unique parallel between them and then also draw a conclusion as to why it is important to look at the two texts together. I have chosen Jane Austen's Northanger Abbey and Ian McEwan's Atonement, which has become my new favorite book! Needless to say, it is a very intricate final paper and I have been working hard on planning/writing it. Wish me luck!

Also as far as school goes this week, 2 classmates and myself from my Intro to Human Services class will be attending a social work agency in Providence called Meeting Street this week. We will be conducting a formal interview, taking a tour of the facility and then writing a final paper on our experience. I am looking forward to going and will certainly blog about that!

Right now I am off to prepare for night 2 of the Dance Club Fall Show of 2009 and yes be expecting pictures! Later this week I will fill you in on the wrap of of my outside the classroom activities for the semester!

Things to expect to hear about this week:
-Admission Ambassadors Thanksgiving Dinner
-Dance Club Fall Show Results & Banquet
-Mentoring/President's Council Christmas Party

STAY TUNED AND THANKS FOR READING!

Thanksgiving is almost here!

Right now the PC students are working hard to get all those last minute papers and assignments in before we leave tomorrow for our nice Thanksgiving break. This morning I passed in my final Civ paper of the semester and I feel so accomplished. This afternoon and tonight my roommates and I have been tidying up our things and cleaning our room. My roommate Anne Marie is from Chiacgo so all her things are packed and ready to go.

In the past two weeks a lot has happened. Two weekend ago I went to a wedding, my boyfriend's uncle got married and the reception was a blast. Also last week we had our mentoring gathering and we played basketball and ate tacos which was a lot of fun. We also took some time to help our mentees write a short paragraph about what the upcoming holidays mean to them. As mentors, we too will be writing our own paragraphs and making a booklet for everyone to have - a real nice gesture.

This past weekend was jam packed with, you guessed it - HOMEWORK. However, I was able to escape and catch some of the men's ice hockey game against Northeastern with some friends and then my mom and sister came to visit Sunday and we went shopping on Thayer St.

Well there is the recap of my life for the past two weeks..two classes tomorrow and then I'm heading to the DUNK to watching the basketball team take on Vermont with my dad, then heading home!

HAVE A GREAT THANKSGIVING!

Work Study at PC

So this year I was lucky enough to interview in the Office of College Events for a work study position and be chosen for employment. It is really a great oppurtunity, and I am not talking just about the money that I can put towards school, but the experience overall. Work study opportunities here at PC can really teach you a lot of useful skills that you cannot learn inside the classroom.

This past weekend was Freshman Family Weekend and I was a busy bee both Saturday and Sunday. By working the events like this, I am beginning to learn the ins and outs of event planning - something that could be very useful in the future.

There are lots of jobs available on campus for students that offer similar oppurtunities for those with and without work study.

Mentoring Costume Extravaganza!

Like I said in my post earlier today, we had a great time making costumes yesterday with the San Miguel boys out of common household materials.

Here are pictures like I promised!

October where'd you go?

October has almost come and gone and right now us PC kids are trying to get through this last week of mid-term exams. Lucky for me I only had one, in my ethics class, but my roommates had tests galore!

Once mid-terms are over, the hustle and bustle of registering for classes for next semester will begin. I cannot belive it is already that time! I am getting ready to plan out my 4th semester at PC, it just does not feel like I have been here that long.

Just to give you an update on my activities...

Admissions Ambassadors has been going great. Although my schedule does not permit me to have Day Visits, I have been giving an Information Session once a week. Speaking to a large group on a weekly basis has really begun improving my public speaking skills and I love talking to prospective students and families, and sharing my PC experience with them, in hopes that they will come here too!

Mentoring has also been going great! Two weeks ago we went on a scavanger hunt around campus and took silly pictures and had a great bonding experience. Yesterday the group acutally took a trip to the San Miguel School where our mentees are located and took a personal tour with them. They were able to show us their classroom, desks and their environment instead of always coming to ours. In addition, we had a costume contest. We were shown a table with limited materials such as garbage bags, straws, cup, plastic gloves, etc. and we had to dress our mentees up in a costume. IT WAS A BLAST, hopefully I will have pictures soon.

All in all October has been crazy busy, but in the end hardwork pays off!

Apple Day at Ray!

Today is the annual Apple Fest at Ray where almost everything in our cafeteria some how incorporates apples. For lunch there was macaroni and cheese with apple which was delicious, also apple pizza, apple crisp and other treats for dessert and I cannot wait to see what they will have for dinner tonight too. Apple Fest means you know October is here and mid-terms are coming..dun dun dun..but it is a part of college and we will all make it through!

Late Night Madness is Friday, when we kick off the start to the basketball season. I am going to pick up my shirt tonight at McPhails, can't wait!
