College Events Mentoring Program

Early on in my career here at PC I was forutnate enough to find a community service project that I could potentially be a part of for the next four years. In my highschool, I was an active member in both Student Council and National Honor Society, where we did a lot of things for our community, therefore I was looking to continue that tradition in college.

I then came across the College Events Mentoring Program through a job search that was I was currently running. I had applied for a position in the College Events Office and although it did not end up working out, Ms. Kathy Ashton, the woman I had been in communication with, asked me if I was interested in being a Mentor in a program run through the office and immediately I said yes!!

So basically what the program entails is that there are 25 members from PC, all grades, who are paired up with a middle school boy from the San Miguel Charter Middle School in a disadvantaged area of Providence. We meet twice a month as a group and get to go on field trips, play sports and interact with our mentee. I met mine for the first time last Wednesday, his name is Kenneth and we hit it off right from the start! Because he is in 5th grade and I am a freshman, we will be able to be together and establish a growing relationship over the next four years until I graduate from college and he graduates from middle school. This is by far the best thing I have gotten involved with on campus so far, we have only had one group meeting and I can already tell how rewarding this experience is going to be.

Last wednesday we played basketball in Peterson and then moved on to the lower quad for Kickball and everybody had a blast. The boys are so kind, well behaved, polite and absolutely love coming to PC and hanging out with their mentors. I feel like I have adopted the little brother that I never had and I plan to be the best role model for them that I can be. Our next gathering is coming up in a few weeks on the 8th and we are going to watch a PC soccer game and I am literally counting down the days til I get to see Kenny again!

So basically I just really want to say that community service is a huge part of what PC is all about. Providence is a great location for programs like the one I am in, also PC pals, Best Buddies of Rhode Island etc. Not only are we students here at Providence College, but we are looking to improve the community around us as well!

PC is the place to be!

Hey Everyone! Finally my blog is up and running! Sorry for the delay but you know how technical difficulties are!

So much has happened since I last wrote my intro blog, but I will try my best to capture a little bit of everything without writing a book! The first day I got here, we took a class trip to Newport (almost a month ago), we got a chance to walk around the city, do some shopping, site seeing and make some new friends! Then reality hit and classes started Tuesday! This semester I am taking: Intro to Literature, Business Math Analysis, Intro to Women's Studies and of course one of PC's claims to fame... Western Civ! So far my classes are great, I especially enjoy my literature class and Civ, a lot of reading and writing, but that is what I love!

Now for the good stuff- we had a hypnotist come the 1st weekend and my friends and I got some laughs at our classmates' expenses, and my floor (2nd floor McVinney,ya!) took a trip to Fire and Ice, which was delicious! It is only $10 on Mondays with your college ID! Also we had the involement fair two weeks ago where all the clubs set up displays on the lawn in front of Slavin so everyone could have the chance to sign up for new activities! As of right now, I am in the PC Dance Club, in the tap number, we practice once a week with a show in November, so much fun, I've had two class and I love the dance already! Also I applied to write for our student newspaper, "The Cowl," and we shall see how that goes.

Last weekend we had a Transformations Retreat through the SAIL Office where 90 freshmen had the chance to bond with fellow freshman while doing leadership activities! We even did a 40 ft. ropes course and got the chance to scale a 14 ft wall- something I would have never done before, but for some reason I just went for it and I had the time of my life! Then last Wednesday through B.O.P (Board of Student Programers) some of my friends and I went to the Red Sox game and they beat the Cleveland Indians 5-4, it was awesome, (even though we waited in line to get the tickets at 5:30 am), but it was well worth it!

There is so much going on around here I love it, but homework must get done amidst all the fun!
Below are some pictures from the events I mentioned in this post! I'll post again tomorrow!

I'm afraid of heights but I did this..

Introduction!

Hey PC friends! My name is Hannah Moriggi and I am one of the newest members of the Admission Blog Team here at Providence College. Along with my blog mates Tom and Alex, we will be sharing hand and hand with you our experiences as freshmen adjusting to the new and exciting life here at PC. But first I guess I should tell you a little about myself.

I am originally from a little town in Massachusetts called Blackstone. I’m sure that for the majority of you reading this you are probably thinking, “Where on earth is Blackstone, I have never heard of it! Blackstone is actually on the Rhode Island border next to Woonsocket, RI and from PC it is about 30 minutes tops (Good for when I forget things at home!). I graduated last June from Blackstone-Millville Regional (BMR), the public school in my town which is shared with our neighbor Millville. Overall there are only 600 students in my high school; however we have one of the best marching bands in the country! Imagine that!

Just to give you a little bit of what I am about, at BMR I was a three-sport varsity athlete, playing field hockey, basketball and softball and I’ve been dancing for 16 years. I graduated 3rd in my class, and served as Vice President of both National Honor Society and Student Council while working as Sports Editor for our school paper. I have a passion for writing and although currently Undeclared here at PC, I am leaning towards an English Major, but I guess only time will tell! As of right now, I could not even begin to tell you what I want to get involved in on this amazing campus, because there are way too many options. But the Involvement Fair is just 2 weeks away, so I will be sure to let you know which groups catch my eye!

How did I end up at PC you ask? Well the first time I visited the campus was to see the play Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead at the Smith Center here on campus. We had been reading this spin off of Hamlet and my English teacher organized the field trip. The play was fantastic and as we were leaving I really took a look around the campus at night and thought to myself how beautiful it was, and how I really wanted to look into applying here! Two years later here I am living on the second floor of McVinney with my awesome roommate Jaime! I couldn’t have asked for a better turnout!

I look forward to interacting through my blog with anyone interested in reading and cannot wait to get started soon! Please don’t be afraid to ask me questions, I would be more than happy to answer them. Until then, enjoy the lovely fall weather!
