The Perks of Being Undeclared
As I was sending my application in to Providence College, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to major in. I thought about Business, English, Psychology, you name it...but I couldn't narrow it down, so I decided to come in Undeclared. Just a word of advice, it was the best thing I did.
Coming here Undeclared meant that I had no restraints when it came time to pick my classes at orientation. I was already pre-registered for Civ, then I took an interest survey, which based on the results, suggested I would like Intro to Literature and they were right. Furthermore, coming in as an Undeclared Freshman means that I have the ability to explore classes and what I want to do with the rest of my life, my options are not limited the second I walk in the door.
Not that it is bad to come in declared, I mean if you already know what you want to do, that is great, but I just wasn't that person. My roommate Jaime and many of my new friends here are declared, some love their major and others are looking to switch out. However, those who are unhappy with their major, will have a harder time undeclaring and then redeclaring. Myself on the otherhand, I can simply declare when I am ready!
The moral of the story is, do not feel pressured to pick a major before you even get to college, because it really isn't necessary. Yes it is true that when people ask you what you are majoring in, you cannot really give them an answer and sometimes I feel silly, but in the long run I think going this route will be worth it. Daily I go back and forth on what I want to do, which just means I am not ready yet and that is fine.
All in all ...don't be fooled being Undeclared is cool at PC, take it from me!
