Last night I made the short trek across the street to my friends’ house. What is so nice about living off-campus is that most of my friends do as well. Many of them live either right next door or directly across the street. Other ones are no more than a two minute walk. Deciding to live off-campus is something I am so glad I decided to do. The search process, however, was kind of hectic. We started looking at houses during the first two weeks of my junior year, which is early, but they go fast and we really wanted to live next to our friends. It has been a lot of fun, but also quite the learning experience. My roommates and I have the responsibility of paying bills, which include rent, electricity, cable/internet/phone, gas, and oil as well as dealing with issues that arise. You name a problem and we’ve had it. The biggest one has really been with our oil tank. It would always give us issues when it was the coldest. I guess we don’t have to worry about that anymore!
Since I moved in, I have been attempting to cook, (I am horrible) but I usually just stick to basic foods. I am a huge fan of peanut butter and jelly, soup, and pasta. I could eat these foods everyday. And most days I do, which my roommates constantly make fun of me for, but I never get sick of them. Also, they are obviously really cheap and take barely any time to make. I also really enjoy having my own room. It’s nice to have your own space, but still live with your friends. One of my favorite things, however, is going home on a nice Friday afternoon and catching up with my roommates on our front porch. I can’t wait to do that today! And then tonight a few of my roommates and I are having some of friends over for a pasta dinner! I love Fridays!
Last night PCTV, Providence College’s first student-run television station, had its last taping of PC After Dark with host Tom. PC After Dark is a late night talk show that airs on the Providence College television station on a regular basis. Each episode features the host interviewing various PC students and often includes some form of musical entertainment at the conclusion of each show. PC After Dark is usually filmed once every two weeks in McPhail’s, the on-campus entertainment center. The taping allows students to get a sneak peak at the episode before it airs as well as provide them with the opportunity to hang out with friends and get informed on what’s happening around campus. My friends and I have been to the taping of every episode and were sad to see it end.
Within the organization, there are several different departments including: entertainment, sports, news, and marketing. The marketing department, which I am involved in, seeks to get organizations both on and off campus to advertise on PCTV. This is a great opportunity for organizations to promote themselves to PC students. Everyone who has been involved in PCTV does a great job and I am sure the future members will continue to do so. If it sounds like an organization that you might be interested in getting involved in, I highly recommend joining!
This week my nights have been occupied by intramural sports, both volleyball and ultimate Frisbee. I have played volleyball before, but ultimate Frisbee is a first for me. Monday night, my team had our first volleyball game and…we won! We played three rounds. We lost the first one, which was discouraging, but then came up on top in the second round. The third round was extremely close, but we ended up winning! Then last night I played in my first ultimate Frisbee game and my team won, which is very exciting (second win this week!). Ultimate Frisbee is a lot of running, which is difficult for me because I am so out of shape. I’m glad there were so many subs. We play on the turf field and it was great to be outside on such a warm night. I haven’t been able to attend the last two games because of group meetings, but so far our team is undefeated. To give you a few details about intramural sports…they usually take place twice a week at night and run for a few weeks. So I will be playing intramural sports four nights this week! There are usually two divisions, A and B, to divide up the skill levels. At the end if your team has the best record you make it into the playoffs where you compete with the best teams. The team that keeps on winning becomes the champion of their division and as an added bonus everyone on that team receives a free t-shirt! Free t-shirts in college are very popular so this is a great incentive for students to want to win. Intramural sports are a lot of fun especially when you get a group of your friends together. It’s a nice break from school and work. Also, for the most part, the teams I have been on have been extremely laid back, which is nice. The captains always seem to have a great balance of drive as well as encouragement for their team members. Throughout four years, however, I have yet to win the playoffs. Maybe, it will happen this time around with volleyball or ultimate Frisbee…
This week I have been in the process of applying to more jobs. As I stated in my first blog, I am in search of one in the Boston area. A few of my friends from PC and I are planning on getting an apartment outside of Boston so it would be ideal to get a job close to where I plan on living. Yesterday, I actually got a second interview from one of the companies I interviewed with before Spring Break, which I am very excited about! I have been very impressed by the people at this company as well as the company itself. Even though things are going well this week, the job search can be extremely stressful. It’s difficult to hear about other people getting jobs and to manage your time so that you can keep up to speed on job openings. There are, however, some great resources out there that can make the process a lot less stressful, one of them being Career Services at Providence College. Career Services does a great job of e-mailing students periodically to provide tips on the job process, as well as keep them informed of deadlines and career fairs. I also advise that if you need some guidance in getting a job or even an internship, that you setup an appointment with someone in Career Services. They are very helpful in providing advice and critiquing cover letters and resumes. PC also has a useful website, eFriars, where you can search for jobs based upon your interests. eFriars helps you stay informed about upcoming job opportunities and their application deadlines. I have also found a number of websites to be useful, such as Monster.com and CareerBuilder.com. There are so many jobs out there, it’s just a matter of finding one that you feel is the right fit for you. Since I don’t know exactly what I want to do, I feel that I am more open-minded to job opportunities that arise, and it has really helped me to explore my options. I realize that you are all in a similar situation in finding a college that fits right for you, and I assure you there is one out there. PC is that place for me and I hope I can say that about the job I have someday.
As much as I would love to be outside every day this week because it seems like spring is finally here, unfortunately I am inside doing work for several of my marketing classes. This week I have my Broadcast Advertising midterm. Broadcast Advertising is one of my free electives and a class that I suggest to those of you thinking about careers in advertising either on the radio or in television. We spend most of our class time examining the effectiveness of reaching consumers through various methods of advertising as well as analyzing radio and television commercials. The class also draws-in material from several of the marketing courses I have taken, which is helpful in understanding how to appropriately target consumers with advertising. Along with this midterm, I am busy doing a group project for my Marketing Strategy class. Marketing Strategy is the marketing capstone, which challenges marketing majors to use what they have learned in their marketing courses and apply their knowledge to case situations and a group project. My group and I are designing a marketing plan for LaSalle Bakery, which is a bakery in Providence. We are currently examining LaSalle and designing a plan to assess their business and provide them with recommendations for a future strategy. LaSalle is a small bakery located right near Providence College and it sells a variety of specialty baked goods. For those of you who have not been, I highly recommend it. It is within walking distance from PC and is reasonably priced. Well, there is more work to be done…I will post again soon!
Hi, I'm Jackie, one of the two new student bloggers! I am the new Communications Intern in the Office of Admissions and I will be working with the Publications Team. One of my tasks as the Communications Intern is to compile information on several of the academic departments to give to prospective students upon request. I will also be writing blogs a few times a week to provide a glimpse of PC from my perspective, along with responding to some of your posted questions.
To give you a few details about me...I am originally from Carlisle, which is an extremely small town in Massachusetts. Not many people have heard of it, but it is right next to Concord, which is where I attended Concord Carlisle High School. I am currently a senior at Providence College, so yes I will be graduating in only a few months from now (yikes!). I am a marketing major and I would love to be able to incorporate marketing with writing in my future. Ideally, I would like to work at a television station or a magazine company. Right now I am looking to find a job in the Boston area. I am taking several marketing classes (Sales Management, Marketing Strategy, and Broadcast Advertising) as well as American Musical Theatre. I am also doing this internship for credit so this is technically one of my classes as well. I work for the Secretary of the Chemistry and Engineering/Physics Department, which I have been doing since my freshman year at PC. I live off-campus, and when I say off-campus, it is barely off...PC is right across the street so it takes no longer than five minutes to get on-campus. I have played on several of the intramural teams, which are so much fun, despite the fact that the teams I have been on never seem to do that well. I am also extremely involved in PCTV, which is PC's first student-run television station, which was just created this year. To find out more, just ask! I look forward to your questions!
