At night

CHI.jpg

Chicago is beautiful at night. The busy streets become very quiet when it gets dark (weird to see how the city changes its atmosphere so quickly). It is nice to have some quite time but there's nothing to do because most of the stores close after 6.

My Home work! -design class..

When I was taking department course, I was required take two classes together.
It was Fashion Design 1, Construction 1.
From Design class we learn about fashion design, but not just whatever design.
You find your concept and develop designs out of it. Than also you show your patter how you would make it. Because if the garment is not able to make, than there is no use.
So when you design it, you have to think about how you will construct it.

So as part of exercise, we do de-construct, and re-construct.

this is example of de-construct and than re- construct. I cut along most of seem lines than I put back together. this was men's suit. Than I put it back as a dress.

Also from design class, I did drapes as an example of my dress.
some times it look different from drawing...

I made accessory part of my design.

sometimes these are fun. but sometimes it is hard. because fabric works different depends on what kind, and it might not turn out the way you want. but every thing is experience. TRY IT! than you will know!~!!!

Millennium Park

The millennium park functions like school's campus. It is always nice to go out there and hang around. It contains sculptures and architectures such as jellybean shaped cloudgate and TV screen-like crown fountain which shows people's faces in Chicago. Too bad it is winter now, but summer in Chicago is great because the millennium park is right across from the school museum and of course, there is a fresh Michigan lake right next to it as well.

FASHIONSHOW!!!!

Yes.. I was in the department program and I had a chance to have a fashion show with my design.
By the way, in order to take fashion design class, you have to have separate portfolio review with department.
However, you may not get in right away, if you are a freshmen. Because department require you to complete first year courses, which are core studios, First year English requirement, and history. But different story for transfer students. for more information please contact department!( so business... hahahah:P )

But anyway... These are the photos of my fashion show... right below second from left is my work... hahahah.. with little hood.

AIC Museum

Our museum is big. I mean really big. Despite I visite the museum often, there are so many things that I miss. I wonder how many SAIC students know there is a Duchmp's work in the museum. It hangs right next to Dali's painting. It is funny that I just found it not too long ago. IMG_2673.jpg

Museum of Contemporary Art

MCA is one of my favorite place in Chicago. With my school ID, the place is free to go in. I occasionally go there because they change the exhibitions very often. Also they have a great collection of the most influencial contemporary artists works. I was very excited to see all the leading artist's actual works that I studied and learned.

Hello, my name is Seung Bin, I'm originally from Korea, lived in Michigan for while, my heart will always be in Korea and Michigan, (I really miss my dog in Michigan). I started school with doing painting and drawings, I got interested in art history (mostly after Modern period) and some contemporary art critic studies, and now I'm focusing on Interior Architecture, simultaneously taking art philosophy and concept classes as well.

MY First Year in Chicago.1

2006 fall is the first time I came to Chicago... I was in Lebanon in Pennsylvania, and Rochester in New York for 3 years.

First time when I came here by myself, I had nothing to do. But as soon as orientation started I got to know some people and start going out. like dinner.. you know..

Haha but when school starts it was a little different story. Because teachers gives us assignments to do. But not too bad. Because it was first year, it was not hard, except my Essay class and studio class. When it was drawing still life or something like that, I didn't have to think too much. But SAIC studio was different.

For my first time, I start making " conceptual art."
To me "Concept" was hard thing to understand. I was like- so what? what do you want me to do?????????
yes.. I was full of questions. But my Research Studio helped me. Through out process of talking about my art with professor I start learn how to make conceptual art.
And I still learning about this part. Because depends on what you are doing there are so many different way of approaching.

I 'm going to show you some of my pictures from my first year. I took this photos for my project when I was still freshmen, now this photo is useful at here!!!!!!who knew!

injung ^0^

flowerD1c.jpg

Hello ^0^

It’s injung~ I am a Korean American. came to US in 96 and stayed in Chicago since then^^
well... I am a painter, who graduated SAIC in 05 summer with BFA in painting (01-05)
In 2006 fall, I came back to school for MFA in painting and drawing.
However, since I extended my grad years and I will graduate in 09.
U all know about interdisciplinary part in SAIC.
YES! u r free to take advantage of different department other than ur study of focus...
u c~ we artist don have a limitation in creativity of our work.
In saic, when u seek for things + try to reach out for it => u sure can, will get it!
Well I realized that I really didn’t use school much as a tool after all…

It was big decision to make and sure hard to talked to my parents about it too. Here I am!
I am currently part time MFA students, working on the ceramic project ( wiil take about a year I think defenitely will finish it before I graduate) and learning digital photo and the after effect program on top of painting. This semester had been toughest semester of all but sure learned a lot. I believe what I've learned, will give me greater view to further my work throughout my artist career in the future. ^0^ I am not satisfied with my work yet but I am climbing higher and higher.
Well… I love what I do, I am a very happy MFA student after all ^0^

haha this is me and Arian...well... I could not find decent picture of myself....-_-;;;

anyway back to my introduction, yes, even though my concentration is fashion,
I took some painting, and currently taking visual communication class.

I was in Fashion Department. when I was Sophomore, However, I decided to take other classes, because, I felt I need more knowledge and skills to create playful designs.
I will talk about this later more, when I talk about my courses and experiences.

I hope from this blog I can show you a little bit of my life in SAIC.^^
