Spring Break/Kevin Huizenga
Dear faithful readers,
I am aware that I did not publish anything last week, but it was Spring Break so you know I took a break. However in compensation this will be my first of two post today.
About two weeks ago my advanced writing and drawing for comics class read and discussed Curses by Kevin Huizenga. Curses is primarily a collection of previously published short stories by KH. However, I had not read any of his work prior to Curses and so it was all new to me. From start to finish Curses is enthralling. I was very surprise at how cohesively the stories fit with one another especially after I learning that most of the work had been previously published. Immediately after finishing Curses I went a little crazy and looked up a bunch of interviews with KH. Then I found his website and saw he had a bunch of other stuff in print. I was very tempted to order one of everything, but I refrained. Over spring break a friend of mine was in town and he had never been to Myopic books so we went up to Damen. KH was still on my mind so I thought as long as we are here might as well go over to Quimby's to see if they have any of his other books. They did. I bought Ganges #1, it has four short stories inside. Again, I was very impressed. In the first short story he has some really interesting graphic representations of time repeating itself. Comics always seem to impress me when they can take a really conceptually idea and represent it simply with graphics that support the writing. So now I was back on the computer to order one of everything. Right now I'm waiting for Or Else #2 and some other zines. I'm sure I'll have more to say about Kevin Huizenga later...until then.
