Interiority at the Hyde Park Art Center

Yesterday we went to the opening of Interiority at the Hyde Park Art Center located on Chicago's south side. The reception was quite nice with many familiar faces in the show. Some of Chicago's most renowned artists such as Kerry James Marshal, Nick Cave, and Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle were paired with a crop of some of the city's most interesting emerging artists such as Amy Mayfield, Justin Cooper, and Sumakshi Singh. The curatorial insight of pairing young and established artists as part of one local scene was provided courtesy of the well known independent curator Stuart Keeler and the Contemporary Arts Council. It was wonderful to see Sumakshi, Justin, and Amy hung next to such art world all-stars like Kerry James Marshal and SAIC's own Nick Cave. I recommend that you see this show as it is a really fresh survey of the Chicago art scene.

The full list of artists is as follows:

Benjamin Bellas
Amanda Browder
Nick Cave
Justin Cooper
Carol Jackson
Beth Lipman
Iñigo Manglano-Ovalle
Kerry James Marshall
Amy Mayfield
Michael Rakowitz
Sumakshi Singh
LaShawnda Crowe Storm.

Justin Cooper also did a performance which involved several people scotch taping prickly spiny cacti to their heads as they teetered near a large weather balloon hanging from the gallery space.

Below are the images from yesterday's show and performance.

Wrigley Field: Cubs vs. Braves

Two weeks ago I attended a baseball game at Wrigley Field. The Chicago Cubs played against the Atlanta Braves. It was a hot summer day, and our friend Salvatore called us early in the morning with tickets to attend this excellent game. We sat three rows behind the first base line, providing us with spectacular views of the classic Wrigley Field!!!

Thank you Sal!

Union League Civic and Arts Foundation

On May 31st, 2007 I participated in The Union League Civic & Arts Foundation Visual Arts Competition.

Last week we exhibited our work and met the Club members who support us at the Visual Arts Reception. The judges chose the top winners. There were a total of 14 finalists chosen from over 150 applicants this year. It was a great experience and I am pleased to have been a part of this prestigious event.

There were three of us from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago that were chosen for the final round of the competition; Angel Otero, Daniel Kim, and myself. Angel won the first place award as well as the Club Choice award for his two abstract paintings he had installed. Daniel Kim was presented with the second place award for two paintings he had presented as well. As for myself, I received an honorable mention scholarship for my two sculptures which included a Giant Rice Krispy Treat and Two Conjoined Snowmen.

We were all so grateful for having been awarded for our efforts that night as well as being given the honor of having been selected for such a competitive scholarship.

According to their website, "The competition is the largest and most generous program of its kind in Chicago and, to our knowledge, in the entire country. With $30,000 in awards to assist young artists in accomplishing their creative endeavors, this program provides considerable support to aspiring young people and to Chicago’s art community as a whole. Judges are chosen from esteemed art institutions in the Chicago area. Past judges include: Greg Knight, Curator at the Chicago Cultural Center, Marianne Richter, Curator of the Union League Club, James Rondeau, Associate Curator of 20th Century Art at the Art Institute of Chicago, Elizabeth Smith, Chief Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art, and Hamsa Walker, Director of Education at the Renaissance Society at University of Chicago. "

After the ceremony I had to deinstall my pieces and take them back to my studio, the following pictures are documentations of the installation, deinstallation, and move of my two pieces that were a part of the exhibition. With the manly help of Trevor, Esteban and Justin, I was able to move the Giant Rice Krispy. Together with Gonia, I was able to wheel the Giant Conjoined Snowmen back to their cozy home:

Chinatown

I live near Chinatown and thought I'd share some pics of the neighborhood. We frequently visit Chinatown for pastries and bubble teas, not to mention the all time favorite JOY YEE (restaurant)! There is also a beautiful park nearby in which we frequently go to bask in the summer sun and read our summer reading books.

Kitty Kites Krazy Flying

It was a beautiful day in the park today before the storm came. Esteban and I went out before it rained with our kitten Alaska, and we flew our kite in the park. It was a gorgeous Chicago skyline we had in front of us, and the rain soon brought beautiful rainbows for the remainder of our day.

The summer is here...so fly.
