COMMON SENSE

BizWeek_award.jpg

I was both pleased and frustrated when I heard that the Fox Business School ranked among the top 100 top undergraduate business management programs in Business Week (BizWeek). As a Fox Business School student I am elated to see Temple rank among some of the best programs in the country. What frustrates me; however, are the C rankings the school received from among our peers and graduates. Among the following three headings, teaching quality, facilities & service, and job placement, our own Temple graduates ranked us below par. Let me outline my opinion on the headings and where they really rank.

Teaching quality at the Fox Business School is a key point in my opinion. Let's get past the fact that it's inevitable not to have a bad professor in life. As a college student, you must be mature enough to quit bickering and move on, specifically think back to all the good professors’ you have retained. Fox Business School programs (especially upper level classes) are staffed with intelligent, successful professionals who have excelled in their programs. We have professors/doctors that were once employed by the Wharton Business School (ranked # 1) who have made the transition over to Temple.

Facilities and service are the next area to touch upon. While I will plunge into conversation about facilities, I'll stray away from service because frankly, I don't know what they mean by service. As long as they are not talking about the service in the cafeteria (F), I am sure Temple ranks fine. Touching on facilities, COME ON STUDENTS!! Ok, yes there are horrible 1950 orange curtains in Speakman Hall but does anyone remember that thing being built next store? Alter Hall!! Alter Hall is an $80 million eight story business school! We must also include the tech center and all of the computer privileges Temple offers. I would say we are pretty lucky.

Everyone loves to talk about job placement. Once again our great colleagues ranked us a grand C. If you do not have enough will power to work a little harder outside of school by building contacts and gaining an internship (anyone and I mean anyone has the ability to get an internship) then you will graduate as clueless as the first day you entered school. We live in Philadelphia. We have more internship opportunities within ten miles of campus than any school can offer. If job fairs are not your thing, build your own contacts through friends, family, and mentors. It takes a little will power, but internships and job placement are easier then people think.

We are blessed with the opportunities Temple University offers. Did anyone ever think that by bickering and trashing Temple's programs, you are really trashing your diploma and therefore yourself? Have some common sense. If something is bad, give it like it is, but if you are upset with one little incident keep it to yourself.

Remember folks, the glass is half full.
