Health Fair

Health and well being are important aspects of everyday life. When a Schreiner student, or any student for that matter, is not mentally or physically fit, it can affect everything from schoolwork to social interaction. Schreiner University’s health fair, sponsored by the Health and Wellness Center, is an event that is meant to bring to light the importance of being healthy and will educate students on how to be healthy - "Mind, Body and Soul." **Not to go yoga or anything on you**

It incorporated all elements of health and wellness including both the mental and physical aspects. Many activities, giveaways, and demonstrations are planned and numerous displays will be set up. More than 50 health and wellness related exhibitors and professionals offered health screenings, chair massages, vascular scans, body fat tests, and even tips for going green. Display boards showing concern for cardiac health, sleep and hygiene, glucose and cholesterol levels, first aid and many others were also part of the health fair as well.

The health fair at Schreiner was a huge success this semester bringing in tons of students! My hope is that it will only get larger and larger for the years to come. Hope everyone has a healthy weekend this Halloween!! Buh bye!

Breast Cancer 3-Day raised 8.3 Million!!!!!!

Thousands of women and men came together in Atlanta, Georgia last weekend, raising money for Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund. The commitment to end breast cancer was taken one step further in which 60 miles of ground was walked over the course of three days. The event was called ‘Breast Cancer 3-Day,’ and two of my science professors: Dr. Comuzzie (professor of biology and dean of the science and mathematics department), and Mrs. Presley (professor of biology) participated. Both of the professors come back with tons of stories and shared with me the great news that the Breast Cancer 3-Day raised around 8.3 million dollars!!!!!! That is absolutely amazing!!!

Since its start in 1982, the Susan G. Komen foundation has raised over $1 billion for research, education, and health services, making it the largest breast cancer charity in the US. Komen has more than 75,000 volunteers nationwide, and 122 member organizations in the United States! Eighty-five percent of the net proceeds of the Breast Cancer 3-Day went to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. The remaining fifteen percent of net funds goes to the National Philanthropic Trust Breast Cancer Fund to provide a permanent endowment for ongoing support of breast cancer initiatives.

Schreiner is having a breast cancer awareness day going on today as well. There is a band playing right now made up of some of our own professors. They are called “Fill In The Blank!!” Haha, I think that’s pretty funny, so I’m going to go check them out. Have a good night! Buh bye!

I'm tired!!!!!!

I’m pretty sure that there is a series of viruses running through Schreiner right now. Everyone that I seemed to talk to today either caught something this weekend or was sick right then and there. I swear that it had to do with the mid terms that everyone had to take this week. I had three tests today. My day was incredibly hectic and stressful, more than usual I assure you. I woke up at 7:00am and drove to Starbucks to do three hours of more studying for my cell biology test that was scheduled for 10am. I finished my cell test at 11:30, went to the diner to grab a sandwich, and then back to the library for more fun-filled studying for my cell biology lab practical that started at 2pm. After that was done and put out of my mind, I ran back to the library for what time that I did have left to study for my global issues test that began at 3:50 in the afternoon. So after that test was over, you would think that I would have went straight to bed, but no!!! I had 3 hours of tutoring ahead of me, then some more studying, and then I’m allowed to go to bed. And when I do finally get to go to bed, I’m probably going to fall asleep before my head even hits the pillow. Haa!!!

I’m also in the process of applying for jobs in Houston related to my degree. I know that everyone hears the “if I could do it all over again” speech, but I’m going to say it anyways. If I could do it all over again, I would have done sooooo many things differently. I think that the biggest thing is that I would have kept an ongoing documentation of my accomplishments throughout my college life, along with anything else that I have done significant. It took so, so, sooooo long to get my resume in order! And on top of that, just the stress of applying to jobs is ridiculous. There is so much time that needs to be spent working on this. It’s a process; let me tell you! I think that the scariest thing about it all is that I’m don’t have a clue as to where I’m going to be working, and I really can’t start applying for jobs because I don’t have a degree just yet. It’s extremely scary especially when you’re a hardcore type A and everything needs to be in line. Well wish me luck on that, but as of right now, I’m off to bed. Night!!!

Kerr County Festival

So you know those really cool looking fairs that the little-bitty towns have in the movies such as ‘Sweet Home Alabama?’ You know… the movie with Reese Witherspoon!?!? Well, Kerrville totally has one of those!!! It is an old-fashioned county fair complete with carnival rides, midway, bull riding, chili cook-offs, talent contests, dancing, live entertainment, and tons of cotton candy!!! I don’t know why in the heck I have never heard about the Kerr County Festival before. I have been here for four years now and have not heard a peep about it from anyone! They seriously need to step up the advertising! It even has art and craft displays, and provides scholarships funded by the generous sponsors all throughout the Kerrville area. It’s pretty cheap to get too. I think it’s something like $5.00 for adults and free to senior citizens and children under 12 years old. Well… I guess you do have to pay for the carnival rides as well if you’re like me and plan to ride every single one of them! I have never been to a ‘county fair’ before so this is definitely going to be an experience for me!

Not much else going on this weekend either. Like I mentioned before, I have two tests and a lab practical that I need to be studying for, so that’s what I plan on doing. I don’t think any of my friends have anything happening with them either. In fact, I can’t recall anything happing at Schreiner this weekend at all. Midterms are pretty much all-next week, so everyone should be studying. But I don’t know how reasonable that is to think... Well, enjoy the weekend! Buh bye!

Harry Crate Lecture Series

Bur!!!!!!!!!! It is so freaking cold outside right now and I have NO jackets to keep myself warm. I mean I have a couple of light sweaters that I brought with me, but I didn’t expect that I would need something a lot warmer. When I was walking to class this morning at 8:30am freezing my butt off, there were people walking around with gloves, heavy jackets, and beanies on! I’m going home next weekend, so I’ll be able to grab some warmer clothes then.

So I’m almost done with the week thankfully, but the work doesn’t stop there. I have a cell biology test on Monday along with a cell biology lab test too. Why our professor decided to give us a test for both the lab and the lecture course on the same day I’ll never understand, but I’m just going to suck it up and study all weekend for both of them. And then to put the icing on the cake, I also have a global issues test over globalism on Monday as well to study for. Needless to say, I have a lot of studying to do this weekend.

Tonight I am part of what is called the Harry Crate Lecture Series. It is basically a series of lectures for the encouragement of careers in scientific research. It was established in 2003 with the Elmore Whitehurst Award, courtesy of the Hatton Sumners Foundation. Professor Crate taught engineering and mathematics at Schreiner from 1940-1980, and the lecture series was named in his honor. Anyways, Dr. Holloway, professor of chemistry and biochemistry, heads up this series now, and I have been assisting him since my freshman year. Tonight’s topic is “The Place of Geography Among the Sciences: Theory and Application to the Mormon Culture Region” by Dr. Paul Larson, Chair of the Physical Sciences at Southern Utah University. If I can actually retain anything from the lecture, I’ll make sure to write up a little summery of it. Haaa! Have a good night. Buh Bye!

mmmmm Chipotle!

So today was a killer! Everyone has those days where you just don’t feel like going to class. And today was one of those days for me!!! To make matters worse, last night I must have come down with one of those 24 hour stomach viruses which make you completely miserable. You know what I’m talking about… first your stomach starts aching, and all you want to do is go to bed and curl up in the fetal position because you can’t think about anything else but how much it hurts. And then the next thing you know you’re hanging over the toilet at 2:30 in the morning pretty much wishing your life would end. Sorry… was that too much information??? Well, that’s EXACTLY how I thought my life was going to end last night. It was absolutely horrible! So I’m pretty sure that I got around two hours of sleep last night too. I fell asleep at 7am and woke up at 9am, with just enough time to get ready for my first class at 9:25 in the morning. I know what you’re thinking. I probably should have just skipped class, but I feel so guilty when I’m sitting in bed while class is going on. Plus, I was tired of sitting in my bed tossing and turning anyways.

So anyways, I’m a little more than half way done with the day and my stomach is feeling a little bit better. I guess the peanut butter sandwich and M&Ms that I had for lunch today did not help it out, but I was freaking hungry! Now I’m sitting at Borders Books in San Antonio doing a little studying. My internship today what I have been going to every Tuesday is in San Antonio, so that’s why I’m here. But now I’m contemplating going to Chipotle for dinner tonight like I do every Tuesday night. I don’t think my stomach will like me very much if I do that, but I love Chipotle oh so much!!! I’m in a dilemma thinking about this while trying to do my ethics homework. Hmmm, is it morally right for Johnny to go to Chipotle even though his stomach is hurting from last night??? I think it is! Buh bye!

Family Weekend

I love getting up early before class and going to Starbucks. I have been trying to do that every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday just to get a little more work done. The Starbucks here in Kerrville is so beautiful. It over looks the Guadalupe River and then there are tons of hills in the background. I get there around 7:30am so I’m able to watch the sunrise over the hills, which is absolutely gorgeous. And that’s what I’m doing now, while attempting to get a little homework finished up this weekend. It’s pretty much a never-ending process if you can’t already tell. I have a physical chemistry test this Thursday, and a cell biology test the following Monday that I need to start studying for immediately. And then of course the lab write-ups that take about 3 hours a piece. Like I said… a never-ending process!!

Oh, I forgot to mention the third presidential debate what happened last Thursday night at Hofstra University. And once again, the candidates were going on and on over their taxing policies, so I pretty much turned it off 40 minutes into the debate. But the next day, I went online to CNN’s website to take a look at a national poll conducted by CNN and Opinion Research Corporation. It basically said that the majority of the debate watchers who took the survey think that Senator Barack Obama won the third and final presidential debate.

Anyways, its now the weekend, and Schreiner has kicked off “Family Weekend,” this weekend. Family Weekend is held each fall semester, brings in families of Schreiner students on to the Schreiner campus to experience the life that their student is living. Invitations are sent to each family and are encouraged to bring the whole family to attend. Schreiner University has many activities including soccer games, theater productions, tailgate parties, worship opportunities, lots of good food for families’ to experience together. This is an event that you will not want to miss sharing with your family if you become a Schreiner student. When I was a freshman some four years ago, my family came down and we did the whole Family Weekend thing. I had a great time, but now that I’m an upperclassman, I really don’t care to do all of that jazz. Anyways, I’m going to continue to enjoy my tall Pikes Place coffee and read a book. Have a great weekend. Buh bye!!

I'm Sad :(

What an absolutely wonderful break! I can not believe that it is completely over and done with! I mean it just seemed like I was turning around to drive home to Houston a couple of hours ago, and now its over! As I said before, I decided to go camping out a Mustang Island near Corpus Christi. I had such a great time, minus the super strong winds that nearly blew our tent away. But it was so beautiful waking up, looking directly at the beach; nothing but white sand and clear skies. I’m not going to lie though, talking about all the fun that I had, and now being back a school with all the stress that has been put right back on my shoulder is a little depressing. So I think that I’m going to stop talking about the weekend, because it’s making me sad that it is over :(

So now I’ll just complain about how much work I have to do this weekend, and how little free time I do actually have. But on top of all the time, I decided to sign up and help out/ volunteer with the Human Rights Campaign. It is America’s largest civil rights organization working to achieve gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (GLBT) equality. By inspiring and engaging all Americans’, the Human Rights Campaign attempts to end discrimination against GLBT citizens and realize a nation that achieves fundamental fairness and equality for all. I don’t exactly know where in the organization I will volunteer just yet, but I emailed San Antonio’s chapter, so hopefully something will come out of it. Well I’m heading to do a little studying at the library. Buh bye!

Mustang Island

Hope everyone watched the second presidential debate (Tuesday) held at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. A couple of topics discussed were the economy, taxes, and pollution. Obama punctuated his points about the foolishness of the Bush tax cuts and the costly interruption of the invasion of Iraq. McCain hammered at his ideas of his experience, oil drilling and the importance of victory over Iraq. In my opinion, I thought that this presidential debate was must better than the last one that occurred in September, however I absolutely could not stand the format. It basically cut off the candidates when they were trying to defend themselves from the other candidate’s last remark. It was incredibly annoying!

On another note, fall break is almost here!!! Which means for me, a five-day break. I think that I will be going to go camping at Mustang Island State Park, which is 3954 acres with about 5 miles of beach on the Gulf of Mexico, south of Port Aransas. I have never been camping out on a beach before, but I would think that it would be fun. The only problem I can think of would be the sand. Uhhh I can’t stand sand when it’s all over you and your clothes! So this might be a problem, but I’ll deal. It should be fun. There are a lot of biking trails and there is always a beach to lay out on. I’m going to have a little bit of homework, but nothing that I can’t do when I’m laying out on the beach. Ohhh life will be nice for the next couple of days. Away from all the stress and tests, and studying, it will be nice.

It’s also my Dad’s birthday next Tuesday, which I almost completely forgot about. But thanks to my calendar, which just reminded me, I need to get him a card and present. Have a good rest of the week. Buh bye!

The weeks almost over...

It’s Tuesday and I’m feeling a lot better about the rest of the week. My cell biology test on Monday has passed, and I stayed up all night last night working on my ethics paper. I was so MAD when I got to ethics class though at 9am in the morning. There has been having a lot on internet updates throughout this past week, so the internet happened to be down last night. Why they can’t wait till the weekend or holiday for doing updates, I don’t know, but anyways this was obviously not good for me seeing how I had to write an ethics paper on The Divine Command Theory and Euthyphro Dilemma, not to mention that I needed all primary resources!! Well when I got to class this morning, our professor decided to give us an extra two days making the paper due on Thursday!!! I guess the lesson learned in this situation is not to wait till the last minute to write your 6 page ethics paper. I had initially planned on writing it during this past weekend, but all I did over Saturday and Sunday was study for my cell biology test, and draw up my resume. This past weekend was not fun at all for me; however I’m trying to get ahead so that the following weekend I can just lie around and do absolutely nothing! Next weekend is fall break, so that means we get Monday and Tuesday off as well!

So now that my paper in ethics is over and I’m shaking like CRAZY because I’m sleep deprived; I’m thinking of going to Red Box and getting myself a movie. Then I’ll go to HEB, buy some candy and ice-cream, get in bed, and watch a movie tonight. Ohhh that sounds sooo wonderful right now!! But wait! I have a major exam today for my biochemistry degree tonight from 5 to 8, lasting for three hours!! Oh how I love college!!

What a Wonderful Weekend... Let Me Tell Ya...

I hope that everyone was able to catch the Vice Presidential debate this past Thursday, October 2nd. It was held at Washington University, hosting Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska, and Senator Joe Biden of Delaware at the Field House in the University's Athletic Complex. The 90-minute debate is filled with questions on both foreign and domestic policy, as well as numerous issues ranging from the rights of same-sex couples to climate change. I didn’t get to watch it live because I was scheduled for tutoring someone in organic chemistry during the time of the debate. But I didn’t have any trouble at all finding the full version online, which was pretty nice!

But anyways, it’s now the weekend and I have a lot to work to get through. Shoot, it’s Saturday night at 10pm, and I still have a lot of work to do!!! I’m a little stressed about finishing everything that I had planned on, but I’m sure going to try. Today I went down to Spirit Wind Java coffee shop to do some hardcore studying. I thought that I would go to the Borders in San Antonio, but I had to get my tires rotated and balanced over at the Discount Tire. There are tons of Discount Tires’ back in Houston, but the one here is amazingly fast!! In Houston, I would have to drop off my car at 8am in the morning and pick it up around 2pm in the afternoon! Thankfully that’s not how it works in Kerrville. I would have not been happy trying to sit in Discount Tire and studying. So 30 minutes later, my car was finished and I was off for coffee. I wrote up my resume today that I will be sending out to companies in Houston in search for a job as well. I DO NOT like writing up resumes; it’s so time consuming, and everything has to be perfect! I’m probably going to take it down to the Writing Center that Schreiner offers students for free. Basically there are students who are incredibly good at writing who work at the writing center for money. So then, the students who suck at writing and spelling (which would be me!!!) can take their papers into the center to have them reviewed. Yeah I’m going to do that on Monday, and then send it to a bunch of my friends for them to read too.

Well, I’m going to try to get a little more work done before my night ends. Hope everyone has a great weekend! Buh Bye!
